Dos_Box Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 We are undertaking a bit of important research and need to find out just how many schools out there require SSl certificates and how many you need. This should include any self signed certificates you currently have to ensure correct operations of your Exchange, VPN, online reporting etc. This is for UK schools only, but if you are from another country and would like us to run a poll for you please don't hesitate to us
localzuk Posted June 18, 2009 Posted June 18, 2009 I've voted 2, but currently only use 1. We will soon have 2 sites - 1 which is our public site, with a school shop, and another which is our webservice site - used by externally managed sites (saves us opening ports to database servers).

box_l Posted June 19, 2009 Posted June 19, 2009 i voted 4 +, bit only need one wildcard cert per school. i do however (with my colleagues) support 55 schools. the trouble has not been finding a supplier but getting the local council to respond the the licence provider. the council hold the top level domain name and the provider wants them to respond to the verification request. if any one knows how to get the cert provider to repond to the school direct I would be very greatful! I would think I need one each for: mail, SLG, new (planned) open access wireless, remote/VPN. But if it is possible to have them as *.domainname.sch.uk instead, then maybe I would only need 1.

spc-rocket Posted June 21, 2009 Posted June 21, 2009 I think its worth mentioning that there some servcies such as exchange 2007 requires the use SAN (Subject Alternative Names) certs to pulish servcies such as Outlook anywhere and Exchange Active sync. Wild card certs don't work Exchange activesync (EAS) because some mobile devices don't support them. So please whoever is researching this make sure that SAN certs are inlcuded as i'm sure these will more handy for many services certainly in exchange publishing scenarios. Ash.

maniac Posted June 22, 2009 Posted June 22, 2009 We only have one, but we are planning to launch more web services over the next year, so will probably need 2 or maybe more. Ours are self signed at the moment, and the staff get damned confused when they get the warning screen. One of the things to sort out for the summer is getting a signed certificate! Mike.
