Ultan and myself are going to:

install a network cable into each classroom

Recable at least one computer room, maybe more depending on time

Install cabling in new computer room

Install extra network cabling in server room

It looks like I've got it easy compared to everyone else :

install an LTSP network - 2 servers, 30 thin clients

chuck out a load of junk

go on holiday

and thats it!

And you all think you've got it hard:

Day 1: I've got to discover electricty, harness it, create the national grid ......

Day 2: Invent the transistor, make the first semiconductor, write an operating system .....

Day 3: Create the worlds first telephone, unleash a telecoms revolution, setup the internet across the world...

Day 4: Have a nap

Day 5: Setup the principals of currency, develope democarcy, implement free education for all the countries children ....

Then in the second week I need to make a time machine to go back and do all that.

Rest of the hols i'm free (time machine)

For all thos python fans out there :lol:

Electricity !? Oh...how we would have loved to have to discover electricity. Back in our day, we had to pay them to let us discover fire, then we would work on other research for 25 hours a day, for tuppence a year, come home where our fathers would beat us to death with a chainsaw and dance merry hell on our graves

Not a busy Summer this year... did the big stuff last year.

Amongst other things I have to:

* Replace most unmanaged switches for managed switches

* Hang the Bluesocket APs on the walls

* Do a little bit of computer configuration

* Build a server

* Move some server roles about to spread the load

* Tidy up a bit ;)

Two jobs...

1. Throw servers out of window

2. Throw client machines out of window

Woohoo! Then no more things can go wrong!! No computers, no problems (for me anyway).

We are designing a poster for my office door that says: -

"Before knocking, please check the following:

- Have you tried turning it off and on again?

- Are you sure it is plugged in?"

While taken from "the IT crowd", I think it will cut my work by 50%, haha.

Electricity !? Oh...how we would have loved to have to discover electricity...

A classic from the Unix fortune file...

the greatest Electrical Pioneer of them all was Thomas Edison, who was a brilliant inventor despite the fact that he had little formal education and lived in New Jersey. Edison's first major invention in 1877, was the phonograph, which could soon be found in thousands of American homes, where it basically sat until 1923, when the record was invented. But Edison's greatest achievement came in 1879, when he invented the electric company. Edison's design was a brilliant adaptation of the simple electrical circuit: the electric company sends electricity through a wire to a customer, then immediately gets the electricity back through another wire, then (this is the brilliant part) sends it right back to the customer again.

This means that an electric company can sell a customer the same batch of electricity thousands of times a day and never get caught, since very few customers take the time to examine their electricity closely. In fact the last year any new electricity was generated in the United States was 1937; the electric companies have been merely re-elling it ever since, which is why they have so much free time to apply for rate increases.

-- Dave Barry, "What is Electricity?"

Not much to do here except:

* Cable and switches for new ICT suite

* Set up workstations, printers and interactive whiteboard for above

* Another 6 interactive whiteboards to install.

* Load balance print servers.

* Build two 2TB NAS servers and configure for backups

* Configure live state full metal restore anywhere for both servers and clients using acronis.

* Whole school rebuild clients.

* Comms room to re-cable

* Install new ups

* Cluster all Cisco switches for future Vlans

* Move switches into cabinet of their own making room for extra servers

* Clean all hardware and remove all dust and clegg

and this is just on the first day. Hope I entice Webman to show his face but wouldn't blame him if he didn't.

I try and get jobs done in term time as much as possible. The last 2 weeks being pretty good as the computers rarely go on apart from when I let the kids hook up the playstation on the Interactive whiteboard’s and that’s doesn’t need the server. As long as I inform everyone I can get away with the server being down for part of the last 2 weeks. Sports days are also good times to work.

My jobs for the last few weeks are to finish setting up the new server and policies, setup 20 computers 10 of which I have done. Set up the IT suite with new tables, which arrived today. Cable some more computers so another 5 to 10 in various rooms are online. Fiddle with the wireless network as a few spots are a little on the weak side for my liking. All of which should be get done with time to spare.

Then I take the full summer holidays off. Not a chance I will be in apart from emergencies which are very rare.
