I've got

a new server to build and the server room to sort out.

another server to demote, resize partitions or failing that rebuild and promote.

another storage room to clear out.

contractors in installing network cabling.

2 different contractors in installing projectors and iwb.

building refurbishment work going on.

new users to create.

old users to delete.

machines to build.

15 new music pcs to setup.

Recording studio to setup.

several laptops I'd imagine to setup.

I've only got 2 weeks in the summer holiday to do this and I'm having the first 3 weeks off completely.

Same as others, not a major summer:

Upgrade sims

Ghost 30 PC's and put into on room (started already, just an upgrade on hardware)

Ghost 30 PC's and move to room next door (these are the older pc's the above are replacing)

Add all the new students to the servers

Make sure all computers are working, have keyboards and mice

Put servers into rack mounted cases (though I am expecting these before the hols)

To be honest compared to a lot of you thats nothing...lol

Well, I am termtime only but had organised to come in and build a new machine, image it and ghost another 27, move comps out of one room, datawipe them, move comps in from another room, and set up the new ones (all at normal rate - don't get overtime)

I had hoped to fit in the machine build before the end of term

BUT

Some moron, when speaking to Dell about the spec of the machines, specified desktop and didn't check the quote.

Yesterday we got 28 towers delivered, and currently Dell are trying to charge for changing them

Guess who the moron is?

I may not have a job, never mind something to do in the summer!!

What a fool!! :toimonster:

Wow! Why don't you set up your contracting business. You seem to do alot more of sparky stuff then alot of techs.

Hehe , true :)

Thing is, I am a Network Technician, to me that means I do sparky stuff. If I was dealing with just software then I would consider myself to be a Network Administrator..not a technician. In my mind there is a fundamental difference between an administrator and a technician.

Mind you..trouble with having my own contracting business would be that I wouldnt get all the lovely holidays and finish nice and early each day :) , though I suppose as it would be my business I could always do that anyway lol

But then again, I dont think I would like my own business, too much hassle, too much stress, too much mindwork. Seen far too many folks try their own businesses and had it destroy their lives. I'm happy to work for someone else, doing the stuff I do, and leaving my work at work when I head home :D

But you are certainly right, its very interesting how large the differences are in what some IT technicians do compared to other IT technicians. Its amazing how varied all of our workdays are compared to each other, especially when you consider that many of us essentially have the same job title. Perhaps there should be some variation of job title...maybe have Network Co-ordinator, Network Administrator, Network Technician. Something like that.

EDIT : Thinking on it further..a better description for what I do might be Network Engineer. So Network Co-ordinator, Network Administrator, Network Technician and Network Engineer :)

Ok,

1) Network any room that isn't already done (26). Only 2 or 3 of them are full "computer room" type cabling.

2) Convert SIMS to SQL Server and set up PARS.

3) Build 30 thin clients and set up a new terminal server for the above.

4) Rearrange server room and install new rack.

5) Replace several dubious uplinks between cabinets

6) Keep an eye on the guys installing fibre.

7) Dispose of ~40 old computers.

8] Do a round of proper network testing to see what the lightning did to other kit.

9) Rackmount 3 servers

10) Install mounting brackets for new IP cameras

11) Tidy up the office (a perpetual task).

12) Anything else that seems like a good opportunity.

You know when a thread gets too competitive when you feel that buy adding to it you are joining the 4 Yorkshiremen sketch.

Anyway ...

130 new workstations (4 seperate images to build and deploy)

295 machines to be moved to alternative locations

9 different images to build on these and deploy

WLAN controller and 14 new APs (plus reconfigure existin APs)

2 Terminal Servers to build (one for use with thin clients, one for remote access for staff)

30 Machines to prepare as Thin Clients.

Website to move to CMS (probably Joomla)

Upgrade of FirstClass (from 8 to 8.1 to 8.2)

Exam results (help prepare results for analysis as well as being tech support for the exams officer on download)

Move kit around in Server Room

2 new rooms to cable plus one to recable

3 new security lockers for laptops

9 staff laptops (7 different builds)

Rebuild OS X Server and sort out NetBoot / NetRestore.

Help sort out movement of admin staff to temp offices (portacabins) as the admin block is being knocked down as part of building a new block.

Help local school setup their behaviour tracking database.

2 new IWBs and 5+ projectors to get sorted.

And how do we manage the above?

Cabling (a/v and data) and network changes are done by a contractor (warranty, support, time and cost)

We have the team in on a rota ... most of the team will be off for 2 weeks during the hols so we tend to have 3 people in at a time.

We should get it all done ... I hope

Break the atom and merge it with human DNA to create the first Atomic Man

Construct the first martian colony

Stop Chelsea from buying everyone they want

Solve international poverty

Win the lottery

Try to convince Angelina Jolie to give a kid a normal name

And yet...try and tell that to people today, and they wont believe you !
