It seems there's a different attitude to Swine Flu in the US. OH went to work in Boston, MA yesterday for the week and following M-in-law's near nervous breakdown at news of his travel, I thought I'd check the situation out over there:

 

State Has 34 Confirmed Cases Of H1N1 Flu - Boston News Story - WCVB Boston

 

Officials said that they have been in close contact with education chiefs throughout the state and have not recommended that any schools be closed, per recommendations from the CDC. Of the 34 confirmed cases in Massachusetts, 12 are adults, four are young adults and 18 are children, health officials said.

 

“Closure for a single confirmed case is not warranted at this time given the nature of the virus and its intensity and severity thus far,” said DPH medical director Dr. Lauren Smith.

 

I know that one of the schools closed here has several cases, but as far as I'm aware, the others have only case...

I have been asked by the bursar for a way that will ensure that all keyboards, mice and computer desks are wiped down to prevent the spread of bird flu in the event of an outbreak at our school.

I think this proposal is entirely un-workable as it would require the equipment to be wiped down after every class but i was wondering if any other schools out there have been asked to do something similar or better still if you have something currently in place.

Not only unworkable but also completely inneffective.

 

Bird flu? I thought that had gone out of fashion. Aren't we onto the pork variant these days?

 

Besides which its important to remember that because of our climate, and constant exposure to flu, we're pretty much immune to the nastier effects of even these variant strains - deaths only seem to occur in populations where flu is a rarity.

 

Lets be honest, kids aren't going to catch flu from a keyboard. They're going to catch it from each other.

Ask em to hire a full time cleaner then because you are not gonna get your work done if your wiping keyboards down fulltime. Plus its gonna interfere with classes i presume if you have to do it after every lesson.

 

What an outfit.

Dont forget all door handles in the entire school as well.

 

This did get casually mentioned to me. I just pointed out that I suffered from asthma and was doing my best to avoid swine flu.

And the maths office should clean all shared calculators or protractors

 

science department should clean ALL shared equipment, not just tubes and beakers.

 

Kids should not share pens, pencils, rulers, etc.

 

If a kid sits on a bench it must be disinfected.

 

If a kid looks at something it should be burnt and disposed of instantly by radiation specialists!

 

 

 

also, you need a permit to breath now, just in case you have swine flu and breath round other people.

I agree that the exercise is utterly pointless but i suppose ideas like what my Bursar had is what happens when many "great minds" get together at bursars's conferences and dream up wonderful schemes such as cleaning keyboards!!

Well it had to happen sooner or later... we have had confirmed cases... soooo, wonder what happens now??

 

Nationwide panic and paranoia sets in for a few months, then it all gets forgotten about when the latest media crisis comes along.

 

Anyone remember BSE, bird flu, foot and mouth, MMR vaccines causing all sorts of things, plastic bottles causing cancer, mobile phones, asbestos?

You all get a week off dont you? How many cases have you had? How much are you allowed to tell us?

We have had 2 confirmed and some others dropping today, I really dont know what I can and cant say but we dont get any time off, unless we are too short staffed to run or we are a risk to other people health. We are being assessed by some important people and being monitored tho.

 

Weeks paid leave for teaching and kids... support staff must come in as normal

 

Sounds about right to me .... :p

Cant decide if its best to get it now while its weaker and have it out the way or not at all and risk a worse infecton later on.
