Web Filtering Software for home

Does anyone know of a free software that i can use to filter websites at home? Need to do this as my little one is now old enough to do anything stupid online.

I remember seeing some McAfee filtering software once that was part of a suite. If you end task'd the process, the filtering stopped. Genius!

A tough one. Regular netnanny stuff is a bit rubbish. A lot of folks hack dansguardian onto smoothwall express, there's a bunch of mods for that. We keep intending to do an official one... but never got round to it yet.

K9 protection works ok - just make sure the kids dont have access to the email you register with them or they can make an ive forgotten my password request get the reset code from your email and turn it off.

 

If you have securus in your school there is a home edition you can request from them but they dont provide any support for it.

We use it for an off-site centre that we provide IT support for and it works pretty well.

I'll second openDNS. See OpenDNS > Home Network > Solutions > Parental Controls for details of filters. All you need to do is create a free account with them, register your IP, set your machine or router to user openDNS DNS servers, then any requests from you will be filtered according to your preferences. Not bad for a free service!

Yeah I've setup OpenDNS on my sisters computer to control my nephew. Very easy to sort and use.

I use OpenDNS and DD-WRT at my parents house to filter my brothers. Works a dream, except when they press the reset button on the router, then it all goes pear shaped! But that can't be stopped...

We use that at the school I am at now and you use the config file to block websites.

 

You can use that to block all websites and explicitly only allow certain ones.

I tried untangle, it worked quite well against web searches for porn, but it was worthless for google image searches. They are working on a solution that forces the google safe search to be on in the browser. Until then a user in their forum provided a time consuming but effective workaround. You have to manually go to each computer and set the google preferences to safe search. Then add a line or two in the untangle configuration that prevents the link to the preferences link from functioning. This might work in small workgroup setting where there is a single sign on name, but in a domain where users have their own user profiles and cookie storage, I don't think it will fly.

set up linux on an old box and put dansguardian on it. Then you can filter to your hearts content and see every thing they do. You only need a 1 gig box with 1.5 gig of ram to serve 300 computers so for just one of 2 a really old box would do.

Seems a bit excessive in this case. I'd recommend OpenDNS.

Anyone using any other free solutions for home - I'm helping out with Internet Safety meeting tonight abd although I use OpenDNS - I'm going to need a simpler comp by comp alternative for non-technical parents

K9 should be ample for most parents, as an earlier poster said though just make sure you don't leave your email with no password protection (in Outlook or similair I mean) so the little blighters can't reset the password

Me and ICT co-ord gave talk for parents tonight - not many showed up but we'll stick info on our website and put in in the newsletter and leave copies of CEOP info in lobby.

PS laugh was - i had to bypass the county proxy server using my tethered Desire to get K9 installed on my laptop to show them what it looked like in operation
