Seat belts

Why are some people so stupid they still don’t wear seat belts and they try and stop the noise? I just been watching crash investigators.

If there is a medical reason then fine, the other reason some people are incredibly ignorant and lazy (or ignorant and impatient) and that is not a good mix.

 

You only have to watch some of the police shows i.e. motorway cops and see the mentality of some people when they get behind the wheel of the car. Even in real life the mentality of some drivers actions is mind boggling. I'd say 90% of people that either overtake breaking the speed limit or recklessly I catch up with whilst doing the speed limit. People that drive in the wrong way to a car park then spend 1 min reversing into a space that they could of driven straight into if they'd gone 10 metres down the road and used the proper entrance, the one without the no entry sign, there was no one else around in front of them either

Quite a few factors involved, but ai tend to just hear “it’s uncomfortable”.

 

I guarantee that’s it’s more comfortable than eating windscreen or being ejected out of a side window while the car is rolling.

 

The seatbelt is the ‘second’ safety device in the car (behind the controls so that you don’t crash in the first place). To not use it renders everything else either ineffective or dangerous (e.g. airbags).

 

IME the people that don’t wear them tend to be a bit thick (can I say that?)

In 1973 when we came back from the States, my father had rear seatbelts fitted to the car as an extra. The salesman looked at him like he had two heads...

Unrestrained rear passengers have a good chance of killing the front seat passengers in an accident.

 

I had that argument with a friend - told him I wasn't driving until he put his belt on and his other option was to get out.

I just put a seat belt on automatically now you have to put effort into not wearing one! People will get the clip and plug it in so as to stop the alarm!

 

May be this is Darwin evolution in action but they kill other people in the process!

WHen I learnt to drive you ddin;t need to wear a seat belt

 

the adverts from thingy were on teh telly but the legislation was not done yet

 

I decided that I would always use one firstly for safety - but also because it was obvious that the laws would come in at some point and getting into the habit was a good idea

 

I just don't feel properly clothed if I try to drive without one - I actually feel unsafe!

 

I did have a few problems getting the grandkids - and their cousin - to stop moving the shoulder bit down below their arm

seem to have managed it but explaining ti to them nicely

 

they still do it in their parent's cars

BL had some interesting ideas with seatbelts in the 1970s and 1980s.

 

We have a Rover P5B, 1970 car. This has three-point seatbelts front and rear, from new.

 

The P5B's replacement, the SD1, had optional rear seatbelts, still into the mid 1980s. For when the kids are expendable. We were very late adopting rear belts as law in this country, and there was a lot of resistance (which some of you have mentioned, still exists in adults!)

 

If one of my passengers won't put their belt on, I don't move the car.

I seem to remember my parents saying that my normal mode of travel in my Dad's Morris Minor was standing in the back on the transmission tunnel with one hand on the back of each seat

 

quite safe in those days

 

nowadays it is clearly dangerous

I can’t believe how recent some of these adverts seem to be they must have done there job with the seat belt.

I'm amazed people don't wear seatbelts nowadays , our Health & Safety officer at our academy was a Fireman before changing career.

He has told me stories of accidents when people where not wearing seatbelts. Usually young people crammed in the back of cars after a night out.

When you hear the details of serious accidents it can be very sobering. But people just don't believe that accidents will happen to them sadly.

In my VW aircooled days, i had a friend that fitted a roll cage and harnesses to his 50s beetle. i'm sure it didn't even have lap belts in the front..... the 2 point ones that snap you in half in a crash.... although classic beetle's are known to be made from tinfoil...... the "cage" even protected the petrol tank..... that is at the front of the car in its "crumple zone".... sure belts became law in 1983 on "new" cars

 

Mrs Jaan asked i never put the kids in any classic cars. I've always worn a seatbelt (when fitted)..... it feels very unnatural being in a car without a seat belt. think i've only experienced that twice! not fun
