Does anyone know whether they have mobile data capability? It would be great if we could use these free data SIM cards with them.

Buy MiFi adapters for the SIM cards, about £30. That's what we did during lockdown #1, we bought new SIM cards on the school's account and MiFi adapters for them.

One of school's family, is getting three chromebooks. They have an 8, 5 and 4 year old. Absolutely ridiculous in my opinion.

why are they going to the family?

Theyre for the school to loan out and get back

I think that's the way to go.

4,436,571 primary pupils in 2018/19. Using that figure: £887,914,200.

So 1/18th of the increase in military spending announced today, seems cheap

Without venturing into politics, I can't really put my thoughts on that here; but I'm sure you can work out why money going to military research projects over disadvantaged children is preferred.

Apparently not. Their for the pupils to keep. Even if they move schools, they take the device with them.

Unsure. We've just had the usual "it isn't working" message from the parent/form tutor, but the timing it about right for it to have expired.

The data usage had been extended to March 2021 along with the laptop filtering from the last information we had from the DfE back in lockdown 1

I hadn't seen that about the data plans being extended. I thought the Intune and filtering had been extended until September 2021 though.

My council contact has said it's extended until 31/8/2021?

Interesting. Maybe it is something else wrong then (the report came to me third hand so the information could easily be wrong). We've given the student one of our school-owned hotspots, so when I get the DfE-provided one back I'll do some testing.

Link: Three UK to provide unlimited data upgrades to disadvantaged school children in England

Three UK will provide unlimited data upgrades to disadvantaged school children in England to ensure that they are able to continue with their studies, as many schools across the country move to remote learning.

In a partnership with the Department of Education, where a child is identified as not having internet access at home, their school can request free, additional data through the DFE’s Get Help with Technology programme. The unlimited data will be applied until the end of the school year in July.

Elaine Carey, Chief Commercial Officer, at Three UK said: “Education is crucial for everyone in society and it is vital no child misses out. Three UK wants to support those families that need access to connectivity to support their child’s learning needs during the pandemic”

The move is the latest in a range of support that Three UK has provided to customers during the pandemic including zero-rating calls to NHS 101, NHS websites and video consultations, and free unlimited data upgrades for NHS frontline staff.

We've got some of the DfE managed laptops, and can't install anything on them, even the Store is blocked. Is that as expected?

I assume you got the Preconfigured ones. In which case you need to contact your technical rep/supplier with the serial numbers and they'll give you the admin accounts for the devices.

Absolutely. They're totally locked-down, with basically no software, and only a local user account.

I assume they're working on a 'cloud or guh-tuh-fuh-oh' policy, which does make sense.

Any idea how long the support portal takes to update and populate the BIOS / localadmin credentials?

Just had some more laptops delivered, but the fields are (currently) blank... and I cannot find an applicable helpdesk request criteria that matches this requirement!

Thanks,

Last time I had a delivery it took about 5 days for the devices show up in the portal with their credentials.
