We've got back in those that we're going to get back (as surprisingly high %age with few breakages). They're all currently "as supplied" which was, for us, filtering included.

With the Chromebooks we'll only have a problem if they need to go "home" after the deadline, though the Windows machines will need to be flattened once the DfE wash their hands of them. I'm leaving the Windows ones until during the holidays in case there's a change of plan/Lockdown 4.

Has anyone been taking in and disabling laptops?

We're supposed to be getting them back in so we can put them on our management/filterting solution, which admittedly was taking a couple of days while we worked out the kinks in enrollment (I think the guys have it streamlined enough we can pretty much get the device back to the students the same day now). Despite making it clear they will get the/a device back, we've had a grand total of 3 returns so far, which is making me in favor of the idea that the DfE disable the devices once their Intune expires.

I've discovered 4 dynabooks now with duff batteries I can't get a warranty repair, so they're DOA scrap!

(were discovered immediately, 2 just now on the unlocks as the parents assumed we nerfed the batteries they said nothing. I'm wondering how many more were DOA and I'll discover in the next few weeks.

Starting to follow the reset guide (https://get-help-with-tech.education.gov.uk/devices/guide-to-resetting-windows-laptops-and-tablets) as the laptops start to get returned etc. Managed to find and locate admin and BIOS passwords ok (even for those not directly issued to us, which is good) but although the guide describes how to reset Windows etc., presumably the laptops are still enrolled (e.g. Autopilot) on the DfE's Intune MDM???

If so, how do you go about revoking this, so can reconfigure and enrol within own Intune?

In addition, does any know if you can request DfE to check and advise when a laptop was last used / online? or even remotely wipe the device? (For laptop gone 'missing' situations etc.)

Thanks,

We've not had any issues re-enrolling them into our own Intune.

Anyone got any suggestions for what web content filtering you will be putting on these devices? We are still waiting for Smoothwall to get back to us about their offer.

I've almost given up emailing Smoothwall support, go through your account manager instead.

We're using the web-filtering component in Sophos for remote laptops, which seems to be working pretty well.

I've had a very good quote from Securly for cloud filtering.

Anyone else receive a sales pitch email from a company trying to take on the contract for the mifi devices? The wording is quite clever, it makes it seem like I have to contact this particular company.

Good afternoon,

I'm looking to speak to the person who dealt with allocating the laptops and internet connections supplied by the department for education last year.

I need to organise the continuation of our sim contracts for Mifi Devices which are currently in place with yourselves. These are used by children who have no internet access, with safeguarded Tech in place.

The original contract ends on July 31st so all SIMS will be turned off on that date. The contract was with The Department for Education and now it's up to yourselves to decide if you wish to continue with the service.

We have a range of bespoke solutions available, all of which offer the same coverage and online protection as the current deals so will make the transition easy.

We would like to arrange a meeting/call with our colleague Dean, to discuss, in detail, your options moving forward. Please let me know a date and time that is suitable for yourself.

We've been blocking a lot of repetitive sales reps and magically enough... our external calls have dropped by about 95%. Every supplier I speak to seem to have little to no idea about the DFE devices. Although there has been the daily anonymous caller which we refuse to answer.

Majority of our laptops have come back - i don't think there is many left to be returned. Had about... 5 I think.. damaged. We are now considering our options on what to do with them. The worst one was the nice HP completely in bits.. apparently.. the laptop got caught in a major family feud.

Did you have a home laptop agreement, so you can send the bill home? :)

Yes, SLT are chasing it up. But the parents are just ignoring any communication!

I've never successfully forced payment from students/parents. We have had some offer to pay though.

Hi,

I think im correct in thinking this but as we are a fully Chrome school my windows knowledge is not what It was a few years ago! :-( When the DfE Intune licence expires will the devices still be usable? im assuming the auto updates will no longer work so the device may not update itself? ie windows / defender?

Im assuming the restrictions on admin rights will just stay in place? We don't have many of the Windows devices out but enough to require an understanding of.

With the Cisco filtering im guessing it isn't running through a proxy or something that no longer exits that prevents access to the internet? Im assuming it will just be fully unlocked?

Thanks for any advice people :-)
