I have just heard from my old place that laptops are being handed out 'willy-nilly' They won't know who has one and who doesn't.

Those that are due to come back (if any, or those issued out of the school's own stock) will be lost for good!

Out of interest those of you who have got the emails.... did you have a request in for more devices? We have had a request in for a month now and don’t seem to be getting anywhere :(

Had dongles approved, but no additional devices.

For us, this is an uplift in original allocation.

Same as this, we did ask for more but never heard back, but these ones are an increase on the original allocation

This would give me a heart attack. It's not hard to asset tag & record who's had one - We made our parents sign to say they'd picked it up and uploaded the forms to our asset system. Also because we intuned them, they're useless once the kids account has been disabled....

I've been asked to fully audit all the laptops we've sent out, including where they came from (the part we weren't already documenting) and I have an odd anomaly, I wonder if anyone can explain this.

We're a LA maintained school so most of the laptops we sent out during lockdown 1 were got through the LA. But we also have 5 laptops that arrived around July, that appear to have come direct from the DfE (they show up in the computercenter dashboard under our login and our LA contact doesn't know anything about them), but no-one remembers us requesting anything apart from through the LA and they don't count toward our allocation on the DfE ordering portal.

I assume this is just a thing that happened during the massive faff of launch, but was wondering if anyone else had anything similar happen?

Quick question for those who have the DfE-secured laptops. Logged in as localuser, can the pupil download and install Office 365?

No. We initially logged in as .\localadmin and installed Office365 ourselves before giving them out.

Now however, we're using Intune, so have been wiping them with a fresh build and installed Office365 via Intune, along with Sophos Cloud and anything else needed.

No. We log in as administrator and install it for them before sending it out, the student then signs in as localuser and then signs in to Office365 with their school account.

Could they be the laptops which were sent via LA for specific named students to keep?

The guidance says any software we install through that method is liable to be erased by their MDM though I'm trying to get Office Online up and running but am having difficulties so actually installing the software would be easier.

I hope not, as we just gave them to next students our "disadvantaged and needs a laptop" list. If that were the case wouldn't the admin passwords have to have come from the LA contact rather than our DfE/computercenter portal? - This is the part that's confusing me.

Ah, hadn't seen that. My technicians have been doing the set-up, not me. Office Online is there and working too, we were just trying to keep the bandwidth down as some families have several children all working from a school-provided hotspot.

Can you install Office 365 with an A1 licence? We only have the A1 licences, and have had a few requests for it.

It's A1 Plus I have, and yes I can install Office 365 locally. I've managed to get the admin password for the laptop, so that's what I've done. Fingers crossed it stays installed!

If you prove you're a school (which in my case, meant repeated phone calls to their indian call centre over the course of three weeks) you get given a huge bulk of A1 Plus licenses, which is just A1 but each account also gets a downloadable 5-seat copy of office

Not sure if that'll still be an option, though, now that they've changed to E licenses.

Thanks. Previous chap had a scorched Earth policy on documentation, so I have no idea who our supplier was. I'll go direct to MS and see what they say.

They've told me I have to set up a Volume Licensing agreement with them for that?
