So - based on that - and assuming this appears in the law they are sorting out on Wednesday

 

If you can work from home the school must not insist that you come in

 

I would have thought - YMMV - especially if you are a member of SMT in some schools

 

That's over-ruled by the next bit:

 

Public sector employees working in essential services, including education settings, should continue to go into work

As before, it's a shame that economy has to ever be factored in (if it wasn't an issue, we'd not be in lockdown #2) and that it's not out the bounds of reality that education could be pushed back a year rather than forgotten entirely. But this is where we are, and make the best of it we should. Let's not forget we have it easy this time round as regards to remote learning, and let's definitely not forget that even when we were being bombed by the Nazis education continued, albeit having to hide under a desk whenever a siren sounded.

We absolutely have it easy. I don't personally think we should be in school, and I have doubts about sending my own in tomorrow, but thankfully it isn't up to me and I trust the schools to continue doing the best they can.

Just seen a list (on the Liverpool Echo - so not totally trustworthy) of businesses that will have to close

 

pretty much what I expected except in includes Vape and tobacco shops

 

Now - my life for some years has been based on one over-riding concept - my wife MUST NOT run out of vape liquid

at least she doesn't smoke anymore - and she reduced the nicotine content late last year

 

but running out of vape stuff would be 'difficult'

 

I say this because last time the shop we use (when I say we - I mean I use) stayed open - albeit via a perspex shield in the door and you were served while still outside

 

So - I'm not sure why this is different

 

So - other who may need to be aware of this - so I posted it in the spirit of community assistance

 

although I do wonder of Tesco will still be able to sell the expensive versions they have - and cigarettes etc

I suspect if kids being in the building had made schools a big obvious target for bombs somehow, the calculus would have been different. As it is, being in school or not didn't have any effect on the odds of a bomb being dropped (though I suppose it did concentrate a population into one building), whereas being in school during a pandemic does increase the transmission.

 

With schools & unis being open, and "go into work if you can't work from home" for builders and such like, this lockdown won't be as effective as the last one, and it will get extended past 2-Dec. Now we're (about to be) in lockdown the momentum will be to stay in lockdown, and the figures will still be ugly in four weeks' time, especially as it takes two weeks for lockdown to start showing up in the statistics anyway. Eldest is coming home from uni this week because otherwise it seems likely she'd be stuck over Christmas.

 

Going to be odd for all of us, though, innit? Not going to feel like lockdown at all except half the shops we want to visit won't be open.

I think some people must have decided to start Lockdown 2 early. Roads were quieter today. Just as well, as I was late out due to having to produce spit for my weekly Covid sample, I forgot my flask until I got in the car (had to boil kettle) and had to drop Mme LeMarchand at the station (she's off this week and going to visit the Holy Grandchild while she can).

 

One good thing: People at this site actually seem to be wearing masks.

Amazon aren't stopping deliveries, AFAIK.

 

Are newsagents shut? I don't see that they're essential unless part of the small shop that services a community with food and other bits and pieces, but surely getting the printed "news" will be seen as such.

"Work from home if you can, but essential people (which seemed to ecomaps everything apart form leisure entertainment) can go in if they can't work from home" was the message in the last lockdown. The only real difference to last time is schools/unis staying open for everyone. At least now if the rates do stay higher it's a pretty good indicator that it's down to schools.

Wouldn't surprise me, the general consensus at home is that nothing's changing between now than Thursday so might as well start now. Parent's golf club has taken the same tack, completely closing from today (at least until the parliamentary lobby group pushes through legislation to reopen golf clubs during lockdown - I kid you not, this is an actual thing)

Interesting wording here (emphasis is my own)...

 

This means you must not leave or be outside of your home except for specific purposes. These include:

 

  • for childcare or education, where this is not provided online

 

Maybe I'm reading too much into this and it's more about people who are isolating. But it feels like schools could send all the kids home if they wanted as long as they could provide the teaching online.

I hope it is an actual thing. Golf is completely safe.

 

Would be illogical that you can meet a friend and walk around the golf course 2m apart but you could n't meet the same friend and walk around the course many metres apart!

IIRC, in lockdown 1.0, golf clubs were shut, but then later opened under restrictions. From what I saw, the indoor bit remained shut, but golfers got exercise and easily kept 2m apart. I think 2 ball play was the norm, so I was slightly surprised to see it listed for closure immediately. As a keen outdoors tennis player, we are awaiting news from LTA, who are apparently canvassing for singles play to remain available. I fully expect clubs session to go, (our bar/clubhouse never re-opened) and probably no doubles. For well-being versus risk, I think there is a case to consider. My fall back for exercise is mountain biking - fortunately there is lots of off-road on my doorstep.

My mums golf club closed their clubhouse on Sunday after the announcement , members are still allowed to use the course keeping their distance.

An error with the NHS COVID app has left potentially thousands of people unaware that they were exposed to the coronavirus and needed to self-isolate.

 

More than 19 million people have downloaded the English contact-tracing app since 24 September, but it has had the wrong settings to record whether these people were close enough to each other to transmit the coronavirus.

Golf, Tennis and Angling have already been confirmed as OK though...

Could you notify the source please. @elsiegee40 had posted a gov link earlier that clearly listed golf courses (and driving ranges) to close. Oh, I do apologise looks like I may have jumped the gun. I know there were talks about Tennis and Angling both immediately being given the thumbs up from Sunday

No worries, we'll just have to wait and see I guess. At least the sun is out again down here in the SE - lifts the mood so much. As for jumping the gun, maybe you could get a job with those sock people :wink:
