mikeprice Posted March 5, 2021 Posted March 5, 2021 Just looking at another forum on the WWW which is also discussing vaccine stuff Someone on there ha s daughter who is due to go back to university - so she rang to to check some details apparently they are all supposed to have a test - but if they don;t have the test then that is just fine - no action possible so - from the viewpoint of a student have a test - negative - wheeeee of you go positive - imprisoned in you room for WEEKS on end in spite of a possibility of it being a false positive and anyway - it won;t kill you (probably) refuse the test - wheeee - off you go I can see there being a significant number of students that may not take the test based on the above logic not, by a long way, the majority rather than looking at the wider picture no idea what you do about it - refusing them access to the Uni if they refuse the test would probably be unacceptable??

Rob_D Posted March 5, 2021 Posted March 5, 2021 Apparently we anticipated about 50% uptake for student LFTs. As of yesterday we were up to 75% uptake. Now there's frantic running around to create more testing capacity.

I've been saying similar about our kids here. As soon as they find out testing isn't mandatory, and they will find out, they're gonna back out of testing. They'll over-blow the mild discomfort (gagging and/or sneezing) as "MISS IT MAKES ME THROW UP!" and refuse to take it. And they will still be allowed in the building. And then the virus will spread. And we'll be sending 70, 80, 100 kids, or entire year groups home again. We'll be right back to where we were before Lockdown 2.0 because hey, guess what, 80% of bodies in the building aren't vaccinated yet.

The point of the testing is not to find out who is infected, or stop the infection from spreading. Its so that the government can say "LOOK, WE'RE DOING SOMETHING". If the point of the testing was to stop the spread then we would have been given the power to stop students who refused the test from coming to school. 8

I've noticed a lot of my local contacts in the 55ish age range have learnt this and gone online to book. I don't recall anyone in the same having been contacted directly. It appears to favour the educated pro-active.

I tried a couple of searches, and maybe my Google Fu is failing me, but couldn't find anything official to say that booking was open for this age group.

Perhaps to clarify, when I say 'educated' I mean have 'been made aware'. I agree that I have not heard an clear notification, but my circle of over 55+ friends/contacts are booking on the NHS website. Until now, I have never visited that site, but it does indeed say 56+ can manage their own vaccine appointment. That's partly why I highlighted the observation. It happened with age 60+, the web page text got amended a few days after the age trigger code was changed. As for it favouring the pro-active then yes it does. However, those that don’t or can’t sort it themselves get letters or calls from their GP. It does save the NHS time and money this way. Edited March 6, 2021 by elsiegee40

(From what @elsiegee40 posted I may not have been going blind) Bit of a moot point now it's officially announced, but your wording did make me feel as if it was suggesting that those smart enough to ignore the published information could get a jump on the slow-pokes. Simcfc73 Posted March 7, 2021 Posted March 7, 2021 I had mine yesterday and I'm 47. I have no idea why I was called by my doctors (I did go the other week so maybe the know something I don't). It was the Oxford one, had a very sweaty and shaky night but feel fine now just a warm sensation in my arm.

Seems to be going well, 3 different venues throughout the school, hall, gym and sports hall, timed appointments by tutor group - nearly all staff volunteered to help in one capacity or another - amazing effort.

One son has started his nose bleeds, common at this time of year following tree pollen and sneezing. Swab up his nose could well bring on a nose bleed - anyone know what the advice is in this situation?

Well the only information regarding it in the home testing guide is "If you have had a nosebleed within the last 24 hours, swab the other nostril or wait 24 hours." 1
