mikeprice Posted January 26, 2020 Posted January 26, 2020 (edited) Hi all It seems that my 10 year old laptop is no longer fast enough for the Brave New World I have been keeping it going for the last year or so by using ad blockers to speed up web sites - and I upped the memory a couple of years ago and I give the hard drive a good clear up every few months I have even reloaded windows and built it all back up a couple of time but since Christmas web sites have started to slow down again I suppose I could scrap the memory sticks and put bigger ones in and swop the hard drive for an SSD bit is it really worth it?? problem is that I'm a bit out of touch with current processors and stuff - so advice on what to look for would be welcome and to answer the obvious question It mostly gets used for web stuff over wifi - news sites and some techy school IT site you may have heard of - hence integrated magic spell protection would be helpful also needs to do some photo editing with GIMP (I hate paying for stuff!!) - but nothing massive and then some word processing and spreadsheet stuff on occasion and, of course, every free system management and network management /monitoring thing on the WWW that you can get for free and occasional simple keyboard based games - no big role playing things or anything like that so - any suggestion or ideas of what to look for nowadays bit dubious about refurbished laptops as you never know how the battery has been treated Edited January 26, 2020 by mikeprice
3s-gtech Posted January 26, 2020 Posted January 26, 2020 If it still has a HDD, that’ll be your issue. A 10 year old laptop will always be a bit of a push, but I reckon it’d be fine with an SSD in (they’re so cheap currently, why not try?)

An SSD is normally the best way to go, but if the rest of the hardware isn't up to the job then an SSD may not help that much. @ICTDirect_Dave would sort you a decent refurb out if you did want to replace the whole laptop.

hardtailstar Posted January 27, 2020 Posted January 27, 2020 Dell XPS. I've had mine a while and its not faulted me once. Not sure on your price range but I would look at the XPS if you can splash the cash.

chazzy2501 Posted January 27, 2020 Posted January 27, 2020 I had some slow Lenovo laptops here, quadrupled the RAM and stuck an ok SSD in the thing. It was still terrible. I'd get something newer on the second hand market. You can get a ratty 4thgen i5 640 or 840g1 ProBook for around a £100 on eBay. Then ram and SSD upgrades are great.

Davit2005 Posted January 27, 2020 Posted January 27, 2020 The last 2 laptops I have bought have been secondhand (£200 tops) off ebay, all Dell Latitudes about 5ish years old. All I do is put a SSD in and put my own version of Windows 10. As I use the laptop only for a few Windows only apps, MS Office, VPN, RDP and browsing that spec i5 upwards is fine for me. YouTube on a TV with a banging 5.1 sound system is awesome.

mikeprice Posted January 28, 2020 Author Posted January 28, 2020 Yup - I know him weird hippy type with even weirder suits (yes I did see him on the web cam at BETT!!) and he FORCED - forced I say - me to stay at the pub at EDIT when I was on my way back to the hotel like a good boy and made me drink more beer at several pubs downright dodgy character if you ask me Still wifes laptop was from him and seem to work fine as were a lot of the laptops at my last school - which only broke under extreme circumstances (foot shaped dent in a screen MAY not be a design flaw??? and a mother boards natural environment is not coffee, especially with lots of milk and sugar!) so I may give him a call soon and see if he can tempt me!! Oh - and his coffee is good and I could do with a day out in extreme wolley back land 1
