I thought that this might be handy for new members to introduce themselves to the forum - whether they be techies or teachers [or both lol] alike - especially with the forum getting so busy, its kinda hard saying hi to everyone to those that have joined up

Was IT Security Manager in a v.large insurance co until outsourcing got me redundancy! So now I am using my skills to benefit education. Hope I can help others.

I work for a public school as an AV technician, principally in the Modern Languages Dept. 1st line support on Sanako (Tandberg) language lab built around a suite of 27 PCs. I keep the linguists off the proper Geeks backs as best as I can.

 

Despite working in languages I only speak basic Geek, and I leave the higher level stuff to those more fluent in the black-arts. DVDs, videos, TVs and the like are bread & butter, also H&S Ctte and other such fun stuff!

I teach ICT at The Royal School in Wolverhampton, but also provide technical support (light timetable). I only started this sept and I am the first official in-house support they have had, previously everything being done by full time teachers and a one-day-a-week support contract.

I'm the Network Manager for a large ICT centre, I look after a couple of hundred machines (XP, XP x64, OS X, Linux) and a few racks of servers (2003, 2003 x64, Linux).

 

Been working in education for 7 years, MCP in Windows 2000, sitting my CCNA in January.

 

Got a fairly broad knowledge base of all things geeky, internet technologies, LAN/WAN design, security, coffee drinking etc.

Anyway, I'm Zoe, I'm no relation to Indie (above), I'm from Milton Keynes like SYSMAN and actually work at his old school, but I've never met him (nor am related!).

 

My job title is officially IT Administrator (I have a Network Manager above me in the pecking order), however I often find that the scope of my work stretches into Network Management (ie,yes, I do his job) and beyond.

 

I have an awful lot to learn still, despite being 5 years into my IT 'career' (ho ho). I started at one of the large UK banks in their Tech Support, working with *nix, then moved to a solicitors (never again), before moving into a school environment last year.. However, I still feel like a complete novice compared to some. Time to start considering my MCSE, methinks...

Hello all

 

Im called matt or "Mr Computer Man" by the children. Im sort of a technician/network administrator thingy, Im basicly the guy they winge at when something goes wrong be it there compuer, CD/DVD player or Intearctive whiteboard/ projector.

 

Im based at Stanah primary school where we have a network of 55 PC's. I also am the technician for Staining primary, royles brook primary, carr head primary and ocasionally mannor beach. Stanah hire me out to schools that have IT needs but cant afford the high fee most companys charge.

 

Im currently on a work placement year from sheffield uni (hence the name Tax dodger) im the only technician in the schools i go to so i have nobody to ask advice from when i have a problem i cant solve so i think you will be seeing a lot of me hehehe

Hi I'm Adam and I'm the IT Technician for Moor Park Business & Enterprise School in Preston.

 

I have a Network Manager above me (he reads these boards but doesn't post) and we are in charge of 4 (soon to be 5 or 6) servers, about 200 (soon to be more) workstations, 40 or so teacher laptops, 20 or so pupil laptops and various other bits of kit including whiteboards, projectors, tvs, videos, telephones and whatever kit that LancsNGfL/CLEO fancy sending our way.

I work as a part-time techie in two schools - a middle school in Corfe Mullen and a first school in Ferndown. I have two very old systems - one running Win 98 on an NT server (50 machines)and one running Win98 and a few XP on a Win 2000 server (70 machines). Plus 32 wireless laptops (arrghhh) and teachers laptops etc. Life is hard, but then again as no- understands what I do at all, it isn't too bad.

I used to be an electronics engineer back when dinosaurs ruled the earth.

Hi - I'm Simon from Lancs (well I'm from Newcastle but I work in Lancs)

 

I look after 8 primary schools

 

I'm the king of using Win98 machines as "servers" (much to the disgust of the pro's) but I've got one school with a W2k3 real server that I abuse by only having 2 logon's - one for me and one mandatory profile for everyone else. :-)

 

I've also converted an old RM box to Linux as a simple file sharing server in one school.

 

I used to work for the BBC, in my previous life, in Engineering.

Hi I'm Matt and I'm an ICT Manager Too

 

I work at a new Secondary school in Milton Keynes. Just got back into education after 3 years in the private sector (Never Never again) other wise have always worked in either education or public sector.

 

With a new School comes new kit. We are an RM Site (I was not appointed until after this was agreed) I'm not having to many problems with there kit yet but sometimes their installation engineers are not wonderful (like call centre staff they follow a script). Big down side is no old kit lying about I even had to go out an buy power cable extenders where at my last job we thew hundreds out.

 

Have 4 servers Inc exchange, 200 desktops,32 pupil laptops 30 Staff laptops and 16 interactive whiteboards. Lots of new technology to get my hands on. also now reliving the joys of Sims( the managment program not the game )

 

Outside of work I do other Geeky things such as ww2 living history and wargaming. So I think I can wear the title Geek with pride.

Ah - my partner is (dare I say it) an English teacher and snorted when she read that over my shoulder - to quote "you wouldn't write I am not a Cat or an Ocelot, would you?" - so I bow to her specialist knowledge - and so would you Tony, if you met her - she has a 1000 yard stare that can quell a class of rowdy Yr10s from the other side of the building!
