This is my first real IT job and I'm constantly living in fear of being found out, although I'm three weeks in and still employed (hurrah!!). I'm a father of one three year old, stubbornly independant girl. My partner works in a Chemical pathology lab and refuses to listen to a word I have to say about computers but expects me to understand the minutae of Calcium/Potassium balance and Liver Function Tests. I quail in the face of such indecipherable magic.

I work in Lancaster High Secondary school. I suspect I am probably the oldest user of the site,(unless you know different) have retired once from a company called Xerox after 30 yrs!! My wife who works in a school found me this job in 2000, said I was suffering from boredom!! school had an RM network then, soon broke that!! now on a pure Server2003 system for curric and Server2000 for admin, 5 Servers, 1 CleoCache box 250 XP clients 40+ Laptops. Have an MCSE (from way back in the late 90`s) Have the posh title of ICT Manager, as I look after Cross Curricular ICT also. Looking to recruit a Technician to help with the workload ASAP, when we can get the job spec etc sorted. Roger.

Like Roger above I am a 'retread', having worked in IT for > 30 years, most of which was with IBM UK where I used to be a consultant doing various things such as mainframe disaster recovery. I retired at 50, got bored and ended up working in a school where I have been for 2.5 years busily replacing geriatric NT4 mongrel PCs with decent XP workhorses and renewing the BIG PCs which masqueraded as servers with 'proper' servers! MistahBatson Posted February 2, 2006 Posted February 2, 2006 Hi All, I'm Steve, the "Deputy IT Services Manager" at Tameside College in Ashton-Under-Lyne just outside Manchester. We have a team of 5 Techies, 1 helpdesk admin, 2 network/IT managers. I am one of 2 network admins for our Win2k/Win2k3 network consisting of 25 servers, 1600 PC's, 700 Staff Users and 10000 student accounts. Been in the IT industry for 10 years and education for 5 of those, and I hate computers. Its official. Oh, I also hate any cheese, computing tutors (or IT "experts"), SAGE software, Pickles and Mylex RAID controllers! But not necessarily in that order! Favourite techie terms are "It must be an 'ID 10 T' problem", or "RTFM!" (Read the F*****g Manual!) Anyway enuff from me! Glad I've found this place as it looks as though it could come in handy, even if it's just for a whinge about the stupidity of users.

I've been here 2 months having previously been ICT Tech in a small primary. We have ~500 pupils and 40 staff covering years 5-8. We currently have 30 workstations and 47 curriculum laptops (All XP Pro), 14 Macs (OS9, OSX) and 35 staff laptops (XP, OSX) with 2 2k3 servers (if you can call our admin machine a server), an OSX mailserver, and an office of assorted junk. But we all have one of those don't we ^^

Mainly deal with medium-sized school networks of around the 100 machines level (although we do get involved with the larger systems of quite a few of the local high-schools). In fact, DMcCoy still has one of our drill bits embedded in concrete under one of his walkways

I've got both the Administrator and the Co-ordinator above me. Although imho the actual Admin is a little.... out of his depth shall we say but he's retiring in september and I'm leaving for uni so they'll be no tech staff at all! fun fun fun. chrbb Posted March 4, 2006 Posted March 4, 2006 Hi I'm another female (actually quite old with teenage kids) I'm employed as a technician in two primary schools both with server 2003 xp and w98, rubbish educational software that never works and I hate printers! I started as a special needs TA but realised that small children irritate me so decided to move into computers and now I realise that a combination of small children and computers can be hideous! (Only joking love the job wouldn't swop it for anything)

We've got kids ranging from the kindergarten age (yes we have computers for them too!), all the way up to VI Form. We're a 3 site school, and we also have an "Enterprise" which is a seperate run business - but we manage their IT as well. The domain is a vanilla Windows 2003, with Win2k desktops - about to move on to XP. We've got Cisco everywhere, from the router to the switches and Wireless APs. So we're a nicely VLAN-ed site! Being a 'well respected' private school, we have to put up with less of the 'rude boys' and 'gangstas' you find in most which is alright. But we have the downfall of computer hacker boarders who have constant network access so are always trying to come up with new ways to upset me! I'm a lot younger than most people in my position - I just got lucky and impressed the right people at the right time. But I think I'm coping alright - my appraisal went down ok! Found this site to really useful the last couple of months I've been a visitor - time to try and give something back!

Tell me about it, I also work for a well respeced private school in North Yorkshire, and we have the same fun, the boarders PCs, and the damage they do. I used to spend many hours chasing viruses round the campus (we are split over an entire village, so sometimes it a car journey to catch them!), so I discussed and got the policy of "all network points in the accomodation on all the time" changed to "bring me your laptop / desktop, you get Sophos for free, and then get your point live". It just help prove my point of how few kids use there PCs for actual school work, which is suposed to be the only reason to have them in school, but thts not the case. We now get kids bringing switches, APs, and even routers :twisted: in, I remember 1st day back in September, the entire network basically ground to a hault, and that soon got the point policy above actioned, by about 10:30AM that morning! We think that in the end it was a Router that had been brought in and plugged into our LAN and it was still DHCPing, and our machines were confused as to who, what, where, when and why they should talk to things.
