I suffered a radial head fracture in a smash on my motorbike* a couple of years ago. I argued with my doctor and came back to work after a couple of weeks off, I was going mad. Couldn't type for weeks though, it was excruciating. I did invent something neat though - I needed to test all our projectors but couldn't climb up to switch them on. So I got all Blue Peter and took a bamboo pole, a piece of Blu-Tak and one of those rubber-finger-endy things and made myself a remote projector turner-onner... *just taking the opportunity to remind readers that despite appearances to the contrary (including apparently the fact that Dr Zoidberg is male) I am, in fact, female...

We have a monitoring machine which sits in the corner of Mission Control and displays a map of the school with information overlaid semi-transparently at relevant points e.g. list of usernames associated with each WAP, low toner levels on networked printers, alarms if an unauthorised machine tries to connect to our wireless network, and alarms if any of the WAPs goes down (usually because one of the little darlings has pulled out the POE lead). This little setup has helped us locate lost PDAs (which will contact the nearest WAP to renew their IP even if apparently switched off), challenge unauthorised attempts to connect to our wireless network, keep our toner stocks up to date and maintain the reliability of the wireless network by dashing off to plug the POE lead back in (apart from the time they yanked the whole unit off the wall and trashed it comprephensively...)

Thanks very much for your help on this wet and grey half term Monday I have used the script to set and report on various levels of hardware acceleration, all well and good. The reinitialisation is a bit trickier, I agree. I cast around fora means of testing the level of acceleration without looking at the registry or the advanced display settings tabs (which just report the reg settings) and gave dxdiag a go. I used the test buttons on the Display tab, and the 3D test failed on all 3 stages when I had disabled acceleration. I re-enabled using the script, then ran it again. It failed on stage 1 but succeeded on stages 2 and 3, so suspect it must have reinitialised somewhere in there. I haven't used dxdiag before, so need to work out if I can use it programatically in some way to do the reinitialisation for me. Will report back! Thanks

We have a combination manual/automatic quasi-solution for this. Using Clam AV, we add known non-coursework items to the virus definitions and then when Clam runs, it strips them out. This is during a scan, not on access, sadly. We only use Clam for this, not for our real AV stuff. The beauty of this approach is that once they are registered on the AV list, then they will be pulled out again and again, even if the name is changed and so on It won't stop them running stuff from pen drives (unless we capture the drive mounting event, map a drive to their memory stick and run a scan straight off, now there's a thought...) It's a tough call about deciding if something is legit or not - but once we've made that call on a given file, we don't have to debate it again...

I'm installing a new version of ProDesktop which tends to fall over on our kit if hardware graphics acceleration isn't disabled. Ideally I'd like to check hga when the program runs, and disable it if it's enabled. Given that this might affect other applications, I'd like to re-enable it at some point (logoff, shutdown etc). I've tried Googling, I've taken RegShots before and after, and I can't identify what changes I need to make in the background to make it 'just happen'. Can anyone help please? ETA - er, we're running Win2K Pro here

I think your first definition simply covers 'the rolo from the opposite end of the pack' rather than the last one. Considered in the context of the adverts which ask you if you would give anyone your last rolo, the correct definition has to be the last remaining rolo from a packet, wherever it was in fact situated - the issue being not its original location but whether in fact you can be self-denying enough to deprive yourself of it and give it to another... Giving someone the rolo from the opposite end of the pack when you still have rolos left in the middle of the packet which you can continue to enjoy is clearly much less significant than sacrificing the last nugget of chocolate coated pleasure.
