  1. Hi All, Jst wondering how other people manage/audit there PC hardware. We use SMS to audit our software. Our current system for keeping track of PC's etc is manually auditing the hardware by writing down serial numbers in rooms and inputting this into a simple access database. We now have nearly 2000 PC's so this is becoming rather tedious!! I have been looking at using Asset Tags with Barcodes and using barcode scanners when we need to audit. Does anybody have any recommendations for any packages available etc.? Thanks in advance MistahBatson
  2. Thanks Mark. That proved very useful. God Bless EduGeek eh!
  3. Hi All, Dunno if this is the right forum to post this in, but hey, here goes. I am rolling out OpenOffice.Org 2.0 over the summer via an MSI, using Group Policy in Active Dir. It installs fine, but each new user that opens the software needs to go through the registering process. We don't bother registering, but is there a way round this using maybe an ADM file or a script maybe? Cheers
  4. Hi All, Just wondering what everybody's take is on resetting students passwords because they have forgotten them! We are currently resetting about 100-150 accounts per week. It seems that they just can't be arsed to remember their password, as we will reset it for them straight away. I have been thinking about only doing password resets on maybe Wednesdays, or even charging a small fee in an effort to reduce our workload and force them to remember. As usual, teaching staff seem to think that if we do not reset the students password immediatley, then we are "interfering with the teaching of students!" Cheers
  5. Hi, We used to have custom built servers from a compnay in Bradford, that were to say the least, flaky. We had a major server crash at least every 3 days, for about 12 months. Mainly due to dodgy Mylex RAID controllers! As stable as Michael Barrymore! After our last IT Manager went, we decided to replace most of our custom built servers with HP's. We currently have a number of HP ProLiant DL380's & DL360's working along side a NetApps filer system. They haven't even wobbled over the last 2 years. I would definitely recommend HP servers.
  6. Hi All, I'm Steve, the "Deputy IT Services Manager" at Tameside College in Ashton-Under-Lyne just outside Manchester. We have a team of 5 Techies, 1 helpdesk admin, 2 network/IT managers. I am one of 2 network admins for our Win2k/Win2k3 network consisting of 25 servers, 1600 PC's, 700 Staff Users and 10000 student accounts. Been in the IT industry for 10 years and education for 5 of those, and I hate computers. Its official. Oh, I also hate any cheese, computing tutors (or IT "experts"), SAGE software, Pickles and Mylex RAID controllers! But not necessarily in that order! Favourite techie terms are "It must be an 'ID 10 T' problem", or "RTFM!" (Read the F*****g Manual!) Anyway enuff from me! Glad I've found this place as it looks as though it could come in handy, even if it's just for a whinge about the stupidity of users.
