I'd agree, except the state of our ISA box, LEMON is far better used for that!

We've got ours named after fruits. APPLE, ORANGE, PEACH, BANANA, KIWI, PLUM, PINEAPPLE, LEMON etc.. etc... In fact we're looking for a name for our new Exchange server in the summer, any ideas?

Scratch my earlier response. Our Sophos Enterprise Console won't find new machines anymore - so now I hate it!

Testing Moodle at the moment - I've always been a fan! But MS Class Server is something I'm looking forward to tinkering with, as the SharePoint solution will work very well at this kind of environment.

Sophos Enterprise here. A good Console interface - I can recommend it. The only problem I would say is if your server fails, you'll be starting from scratch because twice now the console seems to have lost connection to the domain (the server's connected fine, it's just Sophos goes bonkers!). But when it's working, it works well. Easy to dish out the updates, and new installations. Good reporting system too!

I've got laptops with 2200BG Int wireless on them, and they seem to connect to the network (using WEP) fine - they've actually been the most impressive internal wireless we've had. Usually I have to buy Cisco Aironet PCMCIA cards - this is the first time I've got away with it!

This has been subject for debate here. We've tried blocking it completely - staff want to use it. Just allow staff - boys send work through it. Plus on top of that we've got boarders here who use it to contact parents etc... It's a nightmare, because we know it's the best route to get junk in on to our networks, but nobody will discipline. Enter Securus! MSN has become our biggest worry since - as I say with the boarders - constantly on it calling everybody a big XYZ every 5 minutes! What I don't get is..... they all want access to hotmail etc.. - so why are we paying x amount on Exchange?? All in all though, webmail isn't a huge issue so much anymore - bigger fish to fry! ---------- Mike Network Admin Dulwich College

Hi, We've been dabbling with the SharePoint Services for a few days, and I found the eval SharePoint Portal in our TechNET kit. Excellent stuff if planned properly! What I was wondering, is there anybody here who has it running, and has been making use of it - even better if with the MS CLASS SERVER - and wouldn't mind me having a little poke through it for some ideas? Or maybe even a few screen shots of some key screens. Just want to sponge some ideas - there's not much out there about the Portal - loads about the Services though (being free n' all!). I know VLE is a big topic of conversation here, and Moodle is by far the front runner - it has been with me for a long time. But I am definately liking the feel of this SharePoint. Will be even better when we get our Exchange up to 2003 in the summer. Cheers..

Hi, I'm Mike and I'm a network admin at a large independant boys school in SE London. We've got kids ranging from the kindergarten age (yes we have computers for them too!), all the way up to VI Form. We're a 3 site school, and we also have an "Enterprise" which is a seperate run business - but we manage their IT as well. The domain is a vanilla Windows 2003, with Win2k desktops - about to move on to XP. We've got Cisco everywhere, from the router to the switches and Wireless APs. So we're a nicely VLAN-ed site! Being a 'well respected' private school, we have to put up with less of the 'rude boys' and 'gangstas' you find in most which is alright. But we have the downfall of computer hacker boarders who have constant network access so are always trying to come up with new ways to upset me! I'm a lot younger than most people in my position - I just got lucky and impressed the right people at the right time. But I think I'm coping alright - my appraisal went down ok! Found this site to really useful the last couple of months I've been a visitor - time to try and give something back!

I'm not a huge fan of the Roaming (Mandatory all the way if you ask me!), but I think if setup properly, and controlled, it can be a real success. We've only ever had roaming for staff, with a mandatory for the kiddies. But now we've managed to successfully knock out any major cracks, we're tempted to give the kids roaming. Dangerous stuff at this place!

I'd be interested to know if anybody does anything different or do you just stick with the 'let live' scenario - or even the mandatory route. We tried it, but it just upset those used to the roaming.

Yeah, a little logoff script is my current thinking - ooh it'll be fun upsetting people with that one! They hate surprises!

Hi, We've got a roaming profile setup, that works OK up to a point. This point is generally where cookies take over and destroy it! When the profile begins to take an age to logon it's 9 times out of 10 because the cookies "size on disk" is about 30 meg, even though the actual size is only 1MB! How do you deal with this kind of issue, or is anyone aware of why it might be happening?? Any ideas for best practices will be greatly received! Many thanks, and this is a phenomenal site! Mike
