Who will still be running on Win7 and Server 2008 after Jan 2020?

We'll have the odd W7 machine, eg my VHS conversion setup. We have one 2008 server, which is too difficult to change. It runs our intranet and a whole swag of inhouse written webforms, such as the accident reporting system.

I have 2 x 208 R2 servers left that cannot be upgraded to at least 2012 R2, as the hardware is not supported. :-(

Well Capita have confirmed that they'll do the SIMS migration over the Feb half term. That just leaves 800 workstations (most of which probably won't run Win10) to do

This thread has just reminded me that I have one legacy Server 2008 R2 VM running though. All it does is host the data file for our (old) RM Finance system, I should probably look at retiring that now.... anyone familiar with the RM Finance quirk where it can't host the data file on a server newer than 2008 R2? It's a legacy situation here that was before my time.

I would personally export the vhd, delete the Vm and cloud store it. Financial records need to be kept for 7 years.

 

In the unlikely event you need to restore just create the vm and attached the vhd.

Got a couple of Win 7 desktops to do over the Christmas hols which will leave 2 standalone laptops in DT running the laser cutter and CAD/CAM machines (drivers are a pig to work just on Windows 7, never mind anything newer!)

 

I've still got a few Server 2008 R2 machine in operation but I'm hoping to replace all my server hardware in the next budget to will then start the process of moving all servers up to 2019 - currently most are 2012R2.

 

Will probably start looking at some test builds of 1909 this week providing all the necessaries are out there? Such as updated MDT/ADK bits n bobs

There's a bit there that says:

A Windows ADK for Windows 10, version 1909 will not be released. You can use the Windows ADK for Windows 10, version 1903 to deploy Windows 10, version 1909.

 

So should be good to go if you're already on 1903 for that.

Nice thanks We are on 1809 as it happen (I know, we are crazy!) but can update to 1903 in that case.

Surely for those who haven't been given the go ahead by SLT to migrate need to raise the warnings to the DPO? Ultimately, if you have file servers on Server 2008 and are using Windows 7 post EOL date, this is technically a huge gap in the organisations data security and GDPR compliance?

 

Not saying people haven't raised the alarms, but could it not be argued that this needs to go to ICO level if leadership won't budge as they might not "feel ready" to change to Windows 10/Sever 2019?

I guess it depends on your roles and responsibilities, but beyond a nod to SLT to say ‘we’re going to Windows 10 soon’ I didn’t bother them too much. Of course licensing was already in place so that wasn’t an issue - but I know they weren’t interested so long as the system still worked afterwards.

 

If you’re a tech and feel it’s above your pay grade to make that decision I understand though. Expecting SLT to make a decision like that can be a massive waste of time; no matter how much info you give them, they won’t really care as it’s not something that comes up in an inspection.

Eh, the server and the disk isn't important enough to keep, it's literally just hosting a few files. I'll probably stick the datafiles in a zip for archive purposes, like you say, seven years.

I'm in the process of getting the SIMS users switched over to the new way of accessing SIMS (it's a bit fiddly, and if I just give them the user guide it'll make more work for me than just doing it 1 to 1 with them). Once that's done, I can upgrade the last remaining W7 computers (I left 1 per room so registers can be done) to W10. Unfortunately I'm only in 2 days at Christmas so it's very likely there'll be a few W7 computers knocking around after January.

We have 173 PCs left plus 6 servers on 2008. We are on top of this. We are imaging everyday, I am looking at sending some info to all staff today. In 2 months we have to get everything done.

I find it staggering that any school would be on an unsupported version of Windows, given how long Microsoft have published the timeline and especially given the huge fines for data breaches under GDPR.

 

Some places are far far far too blasé about things like this/lastminute.com - Windows 10 has been out for so long now as have newer versions of Windows Server that there's no excuse - I'm not getting at IT staff if they can't get funding for appropriate kit etc but this is a scandal waiting to happen with so many schools lagging behind.

Dont know about you guys but its the lack of support from senior teams that have no clue on whats happening in the world of IT.

 

How many schools have had support staff cuts, im a lone it support and its not from the lack of trying to migrate but i physically dont have the time to plan a big job like this along with all the other duties

 

Yes i have passed on my concerns but they have just ignored me.

 

 

On another note windows 10 has been so messed up i cannot risk having a whole school IT system fail due to all the little qwerks. Lets hope the latest build fixes things.

 

I will be starting to migrate admin staff first then teachers and finally students but it is a big learning curve.
