Didnt even see there were gen2 versions of this switch. Already purchased the Gen1 switches and have them installed and running. Wish they showed all switches on their website on the US and UK sites.

Looks to have been recently updated. All the kit is shown. Grown..

Im sure they would need to be GDPR as they want to sell to EU. Even after the UK is out of the EU the UK would still have to enforce GDPR.

They also throw in central management software for nothing. Cloud hosting and firmware updates for years too without any subscription. Anyone who buys into Ubiquiti needs to understand where they make their money - rapid hardware development to sell upgrades.

I don't think it detracts from the point I was making though, the company is based on selling cheap products in bulk and upgrading quickly in the hope that you'll buy the latest version.

Not really as if that were true they'd end support for products quickly to force this. It's not like their switching line has seen loads of replacement switches or updated models so far. I think maybe your handle on here is quite accurate as I seriously do not believe there is evidence to support your assertion. It also does significantly detract - cloud hosting for everyone for free would be a significant ongoing cost - it isn't the case.

Has anyone given them a test yet? Are they available in the UK from any suppliers? We are going to upgrade to these I think school wide. I've always wanted to see a graph of the network usage easily, such a cool feature!!

If you only want a 24 port POE switch, the Gen 2 one is cheaper than the Gen 1. Though, the POE budget is a lot lower (120W vs 250W). But if you want the Pro level ones, with Layer 3 capabilities, you are gonna pay almost double.

[ATTACH=CONFIG]55733[/ATTACH] So i've just got my first batch of 5 of these installed around site and they are an absolute game changer. So easy to see the ports, speed and connections. We've got the 24 port version on the edge sites with 1gbit fiber uplinks and the 48port on order with 10gbit uplinks. The switches are dead silent! Look amazing! and the touch screen display I find incredibly useful for quick troubleshooting. Overall these things are a huge improvement on anything I have ever used before.

Could the Unifi Gen 2 Pro switches be used for a Core switch, or am I just better off getting something like a HP core and unifi for the rest?

Davit2005 Posted May 13, 2020 Posted May 13, 2020 (edited) It is possible to use Ubiquti ES-16-XG as a core for layer 3 but it lacks any redundancy features for layer 3, they cannot be stacked, etc., etc. I wouldn't want to use it as a layer 3 in a school environment. I had 2 in my home network but ditched them as they did not support IPv6 routing at the time. Edited May 13, 2020 by Davit2005
