Yep got 4 of them here running the backbone, They work really well!

 

What's your connectivity setup between the 4?

 

I currently have a 15 year old HP 5412zl that i want to replace and was thinking of doing something similar.

Just the 10gbit fibre link down our core run in school to different main connectivity rooms. Nothing special really. The 10gbit modules are cheap as chips as well which is amazing.

 

Ubiquity really have turned this this industry on its head.

Aww you see I got like 30+ edges terminating into our current core via fibres so would need to have multiple physical units strung together on 10gb links to provide the 30+ edges with connectivity so could be a PITA that way.

 

You using any vLan's, IGMP or spanning tree on that setup?

Nope, I like to keep it simple although I think the Unifi switches all have loopback protection enabled by default.

So how exactly is your core setup linked up? Is it similar to my scenario of having 35+ fibres from edge switches terminated to 1 location?

 

The bit i'm trying to get my head around is that I would have 3x units full of fibres and then have to link them all together through 10gb links like: S1 to S2 > S1 to S3 > S2 to S3

Our setup is distributed as I didn't want a single point of failure. We just have the 4 10gbit switches as a "backbone" into each of our main buildings. Off those go more edge switches. The servers are then distributed around site as well. Theory is that if the network breaks at any point, people should be able to continue to work. Its been quite successful as well. I'm not really sure about performance but we've never really had any real world issues. The 10gbit upgrades also helps this recently.

@Tefters i'm in the same situation as you where I will need 2 of the fibre switches to be used as a core switch, I was thinking of linking the 2 switches through the RJ45 ports as they are 10Gb as well. It would be a lot easier if the switches supported stacking though.

 

Would you think about having a HP core out to Ubiquiti switches on the edge? I've got to try and keep costs down otherwise it would be HPE throughout.

As far as I am aware Ubiquiti currently do not offer stacking or IP redundancy on switching, they had vrrp from what I was aware of on the EdgeRouter but that was a cli hack, so if you want to use as a layer 3 switch this may be a blow.

 

You cannot go much wrong or any better than with a switch stack as a core in my opinion. Multiple Links/LAG/trunks could be shared between each member, no need for complicated spanning tree configurations to provide network redundancy, IP address is applied to stack rather than individual switches, no vrrp setup, etc.
