Dan_ATR Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 Hi guys. Have any of you used Ubiquiti Network switches like the Edge Max ES-48-750W or the Unifi US-48-750W or equivelent. If so how reliable are they? I already have unifi APs on site, and I will be getting the Cloud Key Gen2 Plus along with the Cloud Key G2 Rack Mount Accessory for hosting the controller and managing the APs via the internet via the cloud access that I have setup. I want to deploy some new switches that are POE+ 48port and manageble for my vlans and intervlan routing. Has anyone got any thoughts on this. I only need 2 swithes. One at core, one for a room. Both 48port POE.

Do you really want the cloudkey? You can run the controller in a VM which is more flexible and saves on the cost.

We have 0 servers on site. We are all MS Cloud Azure AD/365 etc... So any VMs on site would be very much impossible tbh. The controller is curently on my work Laptop which is not helpfull as I dont have the software on most of the time.

I need them to be 24/7 solid. I know some people say switches are solid and then you find they dont tell you about the small issues they have and the times they have to reset them at night. I cant afford anything like that.
Primus Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 3 years - we have 1250 students, around 500 desktop PCs and 400 Chromebooks. They're all in air conditioned hub rooms but I've run them on a shelf before with zero issue - other than the fan can be a little loud like any managed PoE switch. I literally have had no issues, never had to reboot one etc. They are rock solid.

Also I like the look of the cloud controller as even though the setup is for AWS, I can still do this for Azure. My only concern is that you always need a connected internet line in order to manage it. Im not entirely happy with this especially for on site kit for testing etc... Ill think about it, although it is a grate idea.
Primus Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 38 switches - most are the 48 port non-PoE, we have about 6 PoE switches. What features are you relying on the controller for? Most of the features don't even rely on the controller being online after initial setup but some will.
chazzy2501 Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 (edited) I've got that 750w POE 48 beast, I knew I was updating the phone system to ip based POE phones but wasn't sure how much power was needed, not 750watts it turns out Still that switch is solid and has a pair of SFP+ connectors for 10Gig! I have the revision 1 version that can support the old 24v mode for their own APs (as well as the 802.1af) but the newer ones do not. Edited October 16, 2019 by chazzy2501

The only time i've had to reset is after we had some power issues and the power went off/on repeatedly in a short space of time and they weren't covered by a UPS. Run across multiple sites and they just do the job.
sparkeh Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 Yep we have run some of the 48 port PoE switches for a few years now with zero issues. Seriously impressed with them for the price. Only minor negative is that the fans can be extremely noisy on the PoE versions so we wouldn't really be able use them in any areas near users.
mavhc Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 The best switch fans I saw were on some HPs, they had a segment cut out the back, so there was a diagonal, allowing a much larger than 1U fan to be used.
Oaktech Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 Used the 24 port in an install in a religious college with 12APs, set it up and forgot about it. It's the only IT hardware on site apart from a managed router which also supplies a managed-hosted telephone system. The controller runs on one of their Azure VMs.

The Cloud Key does manage the switches but depending on what functionality you require you may not need it running once the switches are configured in any case.

Their USG can do inter vLAN routing however. How about the ES-48-750W ? It says its Layer 3... Failing this ill use the PFSense Firewall/Router. The EdgeSwitch® supports an extensive suite of advanced Layer-2 switching features and protocols, and also provides Layer-3 routing capability.

I was under the impression via the website and via your setup it was. oh well So on that note, im going to bin off the Edge 48port POE switch. Shame my technical sales expert didnt tell me this. I have another issue anyway, the muppets who installed the cab installed the smallest one on earth. I might get 2 x US-24-250W or 2 x US-24-500W as I can then manage them via the Cloud Key Gen 2 and I can actually get them in the cab. we have up to 20 POE devices that could hang off this unit so max POE for the phones will be 4.1W each so 250W POE+ switch would be iteal.

We have same setup as Primus, unifi for edge switching and Wi-Fi then HP switching at core for intervlan and acl.

Davit2005 Posted October 21, 2019 Posted October 21, 2019 (edited) The Edge switches like the ES-16-XG does routing between vlans. But you cannot use the cloud key to manage Edge Switches, the best you can do is centralise backups with their management software unless they have added that option now. There is little resilience in Unifi/Ubiquiti products apart from the possibility of additional power supplies. So if you are looking at resilient gateways/stacking you may want to look else where. Some people have mentioned the possibility of using VRRP in the command line of the EdgeRouters. Edited October 21, 2019 by Davit2005
