What watches do you have / wear / love?

Hi All,

 

Bit of a watch geek here! Would love to see what other techs across EduGeek own, wear and love?

 

I have a few watches but will start proceedings with quite a rare little nugget...

 

 

The Casio G-Shock G-056B, the thinnest G-Shock ever made coming in at 11mm thick! My daily driver, takes a beating and keeps going and is perfect for my skinny little wrists my only gripe is you cannot change the date to UK format and the buttons can be hard to press without pinching a bit of skin or pulling a hair

Samsung Gear S2 Classic.

 

Fantastic watch. Great build quality. Good battery life, nice clear screen, actually looks like a timepiece (not a fan of square/rounded square smartwatches)

 

But I wouldn't recommend it.

I have never been tempted by smart watches, maybe I should have another look as I guess they have massively improved since the first gen of smart watches. Why wouldn't you recommend that watch and is there a smart watch you would?

Timex Ironman 50. Cheap and cheerful, but it has a lovely big display, nice backlight and the start/split button is on the front so great for timing runs and sprints. Even stores the date of stored intervals sessions. Does everything I need (GPS pointless for T&F!)

Why wouldn't you recommend that watch

 

Because Tizen

 

Tizen is Samsung's proprietary operating system and it has next to no support. Barely anybody is developing for it because they're all developing for the iWatch and Wear OS.

 

There's just a lot of little things that add up that if I'd have known before buying, I'd have probably gone with something else that was android-based.

This probably isn't what you're looking for, but I have the Apple Series 4, and love it. Very useful.

i used to have a microsoft band (until the strap almost tore through) was a nice watch and i liked just a quick look at my wrist to see if a phone call/email could be ignored without getting my phone out. since then i went back to my old non smart watch till that decided to keep resetting itself couldn't decide what to replace it for about a year (i got the ms band for £60 and anything smart wise that seemed to do notifications was more than i was willing to pay). Then when my parents got me a decent watch i couldnt get used to wearing a watch again it just felt odd

My dad passed it on to me as it's quite a heavy watch, but there's raised metal around the face so I can't scratch the face - vitally important when you're as clumsy as I am and keep whacking my arm into things!

I have a Huawei Watch GT.

 

Not quite as "smart" as other smart watches, more of an exercise watch with notifications to be honest. BUT, the big advantage of it is that the battery lasts 2 weeks. Only thing I wish it had on top was Android pay/contactless payment built in.

The Samsung Galaxy watch - love it! I can get three days out of the battery and Samsung are fairly good with frequent feature updates. Interface is good and navigating via the rotating bezel is oddly satisfying.

I've just looked up Tizen online and it's open source, not proprietary.

I'm a tight git and don't tend to spend more than £20 on something that will likely get scratched/damaged through normal usage.

 

Currently using a cheap "smart" watch that I got because I kept missing notifications from my phone - but then I changed the tone to be longer, but as it was £8 and has a step counter (not sure how accurate it is!), I'm sticking with it for a while. Similar to

For "smarter" wear, I have this:

 

 

...though without such a nice strap (original broke, similar strap would've cost more than the watch did) and a double hunter dark faced pocket watch with a smooth black finish which looks like this when closed. Both of these are mechanical.

I agree, I'm currently looking for something similar with contactless pay, but currently doesnt appear on anything but the expensive ones

Interface is good and navigating via the rotating bezel is oddly satisfying.

To be fair I'll give it its credit, Tizen has a really good interface and the bezel is actually a really good way of navigating the watch without smearing your screen with oily prints by swiping..

Buuuut I still wouldn't recommend it I really wish I could, because it does its job and it does its job well, but thanks to the lack of apps and faces, you're paying the same amount of money for a Wear OS one that can do so much more (minus the bezel)

It's just little things like not being able to use Google Maps on it. It's a glorified 'you got his notification on your phone' device and I just can't justify the price for it.

 

Though, to be fair, their newer ones might be better. the Gear S2 is a wee bit on the outdated side by now. They've come out with I think two(?) new watched since, and they might have gotten better.

@LeMarchand, great little collection there, nothing wrong with not wanting to put lots of money in watches but great to see some differing pieces you have FYI the "surround" thing we call the "bezel"

@Marci, loving the dial on your TAG any particular reason you went with a quartz TAG over a mechanical/auto?

Mostly been wearing a Pebble 2 and fell in love with it early on for all the same reasons that other people fell in love with Pebble. However, bit by bit all of the good stuff has stopped working, and now that the buttons are starting to disintegrate, I've turned off Bluetooth, stopped using silent alarms and it's now just a watchface.

 

I'm going to go back to wearing my even more beloved Omega Seamaster just as soon as I sort out a fresh battery for it. Not been interested by any other watches.
