EDIT 2019, we broke Weatherspoons!

Thanks to everyone who came to OUR EDIT 2019 Conference yesterday, and a bit shout out to Wave9, our sponsors and the exhibitors who helped make it happen.

Also, to those who were watching live, it seemed to be a big success with about 50 of you watching some of the talks remotely. If you have any feedback on how the image and sound quality was, please let us know so we can make adjustments for the next time.

We hope you all had a great day and will see you again at the next one.

For those of you travelling today, we wish you all a safe journey and if you went home last night we hope you all made it home fine.

A quick mention must go to all of those who joined us for the meal in Weatherspoons last night and in particular the member (who shall remain nameless) who managed to break the Weatherspoons ordering app by being the 51st person on the order and to the 50th order who included coleslaw in theirs making the 51st order fail.

Apparently you can only have 50 items ordered on the app! Sounds like bad planning to me.

My audio comment - the whole "camera picking up the speakers" set up for sound makes the sound super unclear for anyone with hearing issues. Hearing loss isn't about volume really, its about clarity. Most hearing loss is loss of higher end or middle range frequencies, so when you have that sort of sound setup, the bass and echo basically end up drowning out the rest of the sound. I ended up giving up watching as I just couldn't make out what was being said, sorry.

If the audio has a direct feed from the mic, it allows the listener to adjust it their end to get rid of stuff that prevents them understanding. For example - I have a equaliser on my PC which allows me to turn bass down and certain mid frequencies up.

Glad everyone had a good time there though!

Only one thing to suggest, was the possibility of a roving mic for those in the audience asking questions, but the presenter relaying the message back for those who didn't hear worked well.

The snag with a roving mic is getting it to the person asking the question (or potentally getting it from someone who wants to keep talking).

 

Plus you get the issue of the "microphone batton" effect.. people think as they are holding a mic (the batton) they can be heard, snag is mic at arms lengh does not give a clear audio signal.

 

That's why I tend to go with the repeat the question route.

We were hoping to use the radio mic feed for the stream but it failed at the last hurdle.

 

I suspect the major problem was live and delayed audio hitting the camera mic as the speaker was behind the speaker (yes I know... Space was tight and it seemed to be working well). Snag is if you don't put some "room" into a live feed you miss any off mic comments etc and with a smallish reverby room you will get some echo whatever we do.

 

I do wonder if and when the speech to text service is released for Microsoft teams if that would give us the option of subtitles which might be good.

 

It's certainly something we keep trying to improve and feedback is appreciated.

It took Shaun and I 7 hours to get back to Preston. That's about 220 miles, an average of 31.5 miles an hour. An utter nightmare with the M5 and M6 crawling most of the way.

Hopefully we took the bullet for everyone else.

Great event again thanks to everyone involved. Venue and food were top class. Highlights for me were Toms dead pan side splitting rants plus the totally over my head session by Ruckus on WiFi 6. Really would like to have revisited some of the sessions so disappointed the streams weren't preserved for posterity. Our were they....

 

Painless 4 hour drive home Friday morning so yeah.. you must've taken the heat [emoji106][emoji6]

Also fell for Satnav suggesting a better route to save 19 minutes - only to announce a 36 minute delay on the new route 30 miles later

We decided to get off early as google was informing us of many issues on the way home - A34 was completely shut so we did the tourist route round oxford. Saw lots of thatched cottages and rarely broke 20mph. M1 was subsequently pretty kind to us though so I made it home before nightfall. Nick was nice enough to drop me in Leeds as he lives down by doncaster!
