Sonic007 Posted March 7, 2019 Posted March 7, 2019 So its World Book Day and in our school everyone is dressed up as book characters and to be fair some of them look like the'yve spent all night working on their costumes. But....What a load of hastle.... Getting kids ready to go to school trying to find a costume and knowing that whatever you make there will be some mum that has spent millions decorating their child to look like something out of a hollywood movie. I dont need this stressful time. Yes its fun but Bah, Im not even dressing up at work. Got way too much to do and live most of the time in a server cupboard so Meh! 1

Yes, some parents spend ages but most actually find a costume earlier than this morning! There are plenty of minor characters in books that are pretty easy to do. Everyone here is very supportive of all costumes and it is going to be a fun day 1

I've found you either find cheap costumes that look rubbish or have to spend about £30 or more which right now I frankly dont have free to spend. 1
Pink_Panda Posted March 7, 2019 Posted March 7, 2019 (edited) my two are in secondary school now, so don't have to dress up anymore, but I always used to make their outfits with stuff we already had at home or found cheap in the charity shop. I would not spent any money on costumes. The English department are dressed up here, at the moment there are Mary Poppins, the Cat in the Hat and Gangsta Granny in the hall invigilating year 11 mocks! Everyone else was invited to take part, but it's definitely the English department who are the most enthusiastic dressing up... Edited March 7, 2019 by Pink_Panda 1

I wouldn't even count Disney characters like Elsa or Beauty (Mary Poppins would be OK, though) or superheroes and definitely no allowances for "but there is a book of the film". The book must come first. 2

The book must come first. virtually all if not all film superheroes are from books 1st (as long as comic book counts as book) though the visuals may not be identical. arnt elsa and sleeping beaty also from old books/fairy tales anyway even before disney? We're all dressed up in our department. No one's been able to guess my character! I'd say comics don't count as books, and not out of snobbery - I have a huge comic collection. Also, Comic Book Day is the first Saturday in May. Fairy tales are an oral tradition that happens to have been since put on the page. I'd give a pass if the costume matched descriptions by Perrault, Grimm, Andersen et al, but Disney costumes belong to World Film Day. Also, no Elsa, Anna, or even Olaf in the original "Snow Queen".

He'd make a great Hobbit. Nope! He wanted to go as Sauron, but not the movie-intro mace-wielding Sauron with legs & arms. Nope, he wanted to go as the 'bloomin eye!! My last school was autistic specialist - main stream but with a specialist Austic TAs working with the kids. Hence preparation for WBD started a long time before. Their kids generally enjoyed the day - but often spent more time than usual in the ASD base. Their costumes were often VERY detailed. One year the WBD theme was witches and wizards - some the the female TAs costumes were very 'interesting' - I spent a lot of time helping in classrooms that day!
