Trapper Posted January 25, 2019 Posted January 25, 2019 What does everyone use at home for their AV solution, or is the built in Windows solution good enough? I've used everything under the sun from McAfee before he went gun toting mad in the 90s, to NOD, to others I can't remember, had Kaspersky on a 2 yr 5 PC deal but since then I've been a bit naughty and used our work Sophos, by treating my PC as an off site staff laptop and updating using the external server. I'd love to say my guilty conscience has forced me to change, but we're moving away from Sophos so I can't do it anymore! Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

rich_tech Posted January 26, 2019 Posted January 26, 2019 Used to be Avast/AVG pre their bloatware phase, nowadays its Bitdefender Free here for me on my windows machines, low memory usage and no fuss really.
admars Posted January 26, 2019 Posted January 26, 2019 i'm using inbuilt one again now, I've dabbled with various free ones such as avast, avira, bitdefender on various installs depending on what was getting best reviews at the time, some i moved away from as I got fed up with the nag screen, some weren't as resource friendly as I wanted. the last one i moved away from was bitdefender free as it was crash explorer too frequently on the missus' Win10 laptop

Just make sure to uncheck the auto-renewal gubbins hidden away in your online controls and laugh at the huge amount they assume you want to pay for a renewal 12 months later. Then buy it on Amazon for £22.

I had the free one, but they had an offer on last year (20% off I think) and as you can install on 10 devices it works out cheap per device. I’ve installed on all my PCs and a couple of family ones that I “look after when it goes wrong”. Been rock solid, and it seems pretty lightweight too as it use Sophos cloud to do the Intercept X stuff. The only gripe is that you can only make changes online via the web console, so end users can’t make any changes, only the account holder can.
mikeprice Posted January 26, 2019 Posted January 26, 2019 I've been using the Avast free version for ages - never had any problems with it and it has stopped several viruses Or at least it has said it has Used AVG before that but it didn't work too well and caused a few problems (can't remember what as it was years ago)
crc-ict Posted January 28, 2019 Posted January 28, 2019 I like BullGuard for home. It's cheap and lightweight. Possibly not really much better than Defender, but I feel better about it and I've had less nasties on the kids' computers since I installed it.

LeMarchand Posted January 28, 2019 Posted January 28, 2019 I use Comodo Free Internet security on my main machine, because it tells you when it's done something, but free Bitdefender on Mme LeMarchand's because it just does it without pop-ups. HTPC and tablet just on Windows Defender, which it would probably be easier to put all of them on if I could find the time/motivation.

I use malwarebytes in the event that something that dodgey should occur. On my mac i used to use AVG but it doesn't play ball with works firewall (AVG blocks our cert) so had to go to avast Edited January 28, 2019 by DalekSec
