Pale Ales.... why?

One thing that has really flipped on its head is whats classed as premuim in terms of the way the drink is served. Back in my day drinking from a can was a real sign of a devoted alcholic or at least someone that wanted a cheap drink. Now drinking from cans is the new "premuim". Not sure if its me having been brainwashed by the marketeers of my generation but beer always tastes better from a glass bottle?

When I worked in London, when going home from weekend if I got a beer on the train Friday night, I'd get Bass, as it tasted less tinny then other canned beers.

 

When I was in the supermarket recently I thought it was odd all these premium "craft" ales in cans, not bottles, I would have thought it would ruin the taste. Either cans are better now, cans are so much cheaper than bottles to produce they use cans, cans are easier to stack, a mixture of that, or as you say we were brainwashed?

To be fair... They don't usually encourage you to drink them from the can.

It's just a means of transporting the drink from brewery to your favourite glass.

Canning technology is a lot better now, and all cans have a plastic coating inside that stops the tinny taste now. Also, (shelved) beers worst enemy is light, so cans are actually better than bottles in many cases now.

Not a big fan of the IPA's, I prefer something like King Goblin. Darker and more hoppy. Also a big fan of the German beers and the original Urquell Pils!

Pale ales? One word, which those Black Country members will undoubtedly recognise....

(and yes, I know there are Bathams pubs outside the Black Country, but it doesn't always travel well.)

 

Whilst on the subject of beer, anyone who ever goes to Stourbridge (or comes across them at a beer festival) could do a lot worse than sampling a pint or three of Craddocks. River Steam is my current favourite, but there are lots to choose from.

I'm enjoying some IPAs at the moment, especially the America IPA's which following a road trip in the states last year (New York down to Florida) gave us a chance to try some local micro brewery ones which overall where very good compared to the p**s that is an American Lager (Bud, etc). Quite enjoying the American IPA called Shipyard (https://www.shipyardbeer.co.uk/american-ipa/) at the mo - available from all the major supermarkets (Tesco being the cheapest), but my fave beers are Fullers Honey Dew and Wells Waggle Dance.

Sorry to be suspicious - but are you advocating a 'drink' comprising of beer mixed with fruit juice???

 

Sounds similar to putting milk in good coffee (which I believe some heathens do) - or having brown sauce on a bacon butty

There's a favourite of mine, Golden something or other (Badger brewery I believe) which is a little peachy (yes girly I know). Could drink that until the cows come home.

Golden Glory (and yes - Badger ales).

 

There's a very nice Apricot ale by Derventio here in the Midlands (I hate apricots, but love this beer) called Cleopatra. Tastes somewhat sherbety and sells VERY quickly.

My thoughts on the matter is that it's nice to have a variety to try now...

I try and avoid the conglomerate beers these days (Including Doom Bar, owned by Molsen Coors, and bottles brewed in Burton, not Cornwall!), but that's only possible because there is so much local/micro/craft stuff available near me.

 

As for Pale (with or without fruit), if it's good, it's good. Fruit or not!

Yep, enjoy a Doom Bar myself. Also like a nice pint of Abbot. A bottle of Trooper goes down nicely with a plate of fish and chips

Trooper makes damned nice beer batter (although that does mean you don't get to drink it - so buy extra if you're planning that)
