Hi there, been scanning through the previous thread and up to now you've produced a great piece of software! I've been testing the software for around half an hour now and it's everything we need.

My two queries are:

1. Our school exam team will more than likely want electronic copies of the saved work so I wondered if the EXAMTEST file can be converted to a .doc file once the file is finished with through your software?

2. Have you got a way to open the software automatically when logged in to say an exam laptop?

Apologies if you've already covered this and/or the answers are obvious!

Many thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom

Thanks for taking the time use/test EWP. With regards your questions, here goes....

1. Not at present but I can I could at the very least convert to RTF which can be opened in Microsoft Word. Obviously I would be interested why you would need to open it in Word instead of EWP.

2. This is something that is almost impossible for any software to do, as you would have to instigate a launch via methods like a task schedule that launches EWP on user login or add a shortcut for EWP to the startup folder in the start menu. There may be others like running a logon script that calls EWP at login. This decision is down to what suits your environment.

I have thought about it myself for us but we stayed with standard desktop icon that user clicks on.

Regards

Andy :-)

Thanks so much for the quick response Andy!

As in, a convert to RTF option? If so that would be ideal.

Obviously I'm only in the early testing stages of your software but if we were to go ahead and use the software I'd only install EWP on our exam laptops we have configured; so if our exams team were to want the view/have a copy of the work done in EWP then we (IT dept.) can do this for them by taking the file out of the user area it has been saved to and as you've mentioned use the RTF file so they can open in Word. Teachers usually request exam work completed by candidates to our exam team to look through or 'later down the road' times for feedback etc.

We run Office 365 throughout our campus so ideally the RTF solution sounds great however if not then I guess I can install the EWP software onto our exam team's PCs so they are able to open the saved file - Ideally we as an IT dept. (and our exams team!) would prefer the former.

Hope that all makes sense, I'm typing too many words, haha.

Massive thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom

I can create an “export to RTF” option no problem as the basis of the examtext file is an XML file with RTF code inside it.

As always this feature wouldnt be available by default, thus I will create a config option to turn it on so a menu item will appear in the FILE menu.

The only problem with this it will only carry over the body of text, no headers or footers. This is why it might be better to have EWP installed.

Any thoughts?

Thanks Andy, very helpful. Yeah probably best to stick with installing EWP on our exam team's PCs then. It's not a usual thing for them to need to view the exam file electronically, I'm just making sure all areas are covered for if it were to come to it :)

You'll more than likely hear from me again!

Thanks again,

Tom

I put a shortcut to the software in the common startup folder so it launches when a user logs in and it works perfectly. We're testing the software during our Mocks in December but first impressions are the software does everything it needs to.

Hi,

Firstly many thanks for writing the software.

We downloaded version 2.1.8.0 and running on Windows 7 64-bit. We are experiencing an intermittent issue which we are unable to pin down as yet, and wondered if other people have had this issue: On occasions, clicking on the ExamWritePad icon does not start up the application. We do not get any error messages, just no window appears. We have set debug to 1, but a log file is not created - I guess as the application does not get to the state of actually starting up. As I say, this is intermittent. On other occasions, clicking on the icon, ExamWritePad starts immediately. Sometimes if I leave the laptop and come back to it after a while and try running again, it sometimes opens! If I have the software working, but chose to log of, chances are it will not open a window next time round.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated :-)

EWP running over the network or on the local hard disk?

Please also can you send me your config file if you have customised it.

See what I can do for you :-)

Hi Andy! Me again, I've run the software through with our exam team and they are very impressed and feel it fits their needs in every way! One thing I'd like to ask is if you can default line spacing to double? As it's a requirement from the exam board I am more than likely not the only organisation that would prefer this as a default from single line spacing and it saves having the intended student user to set to this every-time from the top menus.. Otherwise, I'll make them do it themselves if it's too much of a bother!

Many thanks :)

In the config file there are 2 options:

1

Value of 1 turns it on.

Then there is a print option:

1

Value of 1 turns it on.

This software is wonderful. Our exams team have evaluated it today and we intend to use it for our PPEs as a full test. They have come back with a question that I couldn't see how to address.

Is there any way to customise what information is available in the headers and footers? For example, we don't need the signature field, and would like to re-order some of the header fields ie. - Center Number | Name | Candidate Number | Exam Code

The signature can be disabled in the config.

But to customise the headers would take some work from me.

I will take a look as to how readable it is to do and report back :-)

Finally going to start using this from Mocks next month, having had it for playing with since May.

How about templating the candidate screen from a separate .xml file, so as well as the centre no (which is static across all exams, so rightly in the config file) we can pre-prepare the following fields in a separate xml file and dump it in the root of the exam users area.

  AQA
 English Language
 8700/1

Then all 20 students taking the same exam, when they're prompted with the candidate screen, they only have to fill in the candidate name and no; the rest is pre-filled.

Exam officers could have say 20 .xml files in a folder somewhere labelled with each exam they know they're going to be using, then just copy/paste the right one into the exam area(s) of the candidates. Some rooms have 3 different exams at once, so they drop the right .xml in the right user areas.

Don’t want to make it too easy for the students :-)

I doubt our exams officer would want to do this as they are busy all the time where they don’t even take a lunch break.

I would definitely think about if more people requested it.
