ass17 Posted June 16, 2018 Author Posted June 16, 2018 Just to keep you all informed, with regards Spell Checking. I have looked into this and the short answer is yes it can be done, relatively quickly BUT using Microsoft Word's Spellchecking, thus you need to have Word installed on the PC running EWP. I have been looking into free alternatives using nhunspell which is used by other freeware stuff, but its dictionary is not as good and doesn't seem to work very well with words that use punctuation. There are other spellcheckers out there but you need a pay a developer fee in the region of £300 up to £700, which Im not going to pay for unless someone gives me the cash :-) Ideally I want to keep EWP independent of third party apps, but if there is enough people who want a spell checker and have access to Word I can certainly added it in.

It saves us from having to create a locked down Word installation (or a custom examinations image). We can just use our existing machines and block Office apps with AppLocker and enforce EWP. 2

This was my initial thought when creating EWP but having spoken to our Exam Officer, Spellcheckers are allowing when scribing exams at GCSE/A Level. So in all honesty, A spell checker has to be available, so EWP can meet all the criteria/all possible conditions set out by exam bodies. This way EWP becomes completely your one-stop-shop for all things exams related. I'm kind of being forced to put it in or else techies out there will be forced to find an alternative just to offer a spell check when scribing. Or is that not my problem? EWP needs to stay as it is?

I was under the impression they weren't allowed a spellchecker as some questions are noted that x marks are for spelling, punctuation and grammar? It might just English exams, but I know I've seen it on papers this year. Like @Arcolite, the main reason we use it is that it doesn't have one. I agree that if I do have a spell checker, then it will be config based for on or off.

Just to let you know, that I seem to have found a good spell checker and although it is an eight year old project still works having re-complied it in dot net 4. I'm testing it further with the UK dictionaries as supplied for OpenOffice/LibreOffice. so far so good! But please be aware it is not perfect but what spell checker is? If you enable the spell checker in the config file then you are given a menu button and have the ability to press F7 to initiate it. I will have to look further into the page break visual aid. 6

Config option called “EnableSpellCheck” is now used, 0 to turn it off, 1 to turn it ON. If on, then you will get a top menu bar button called “Spell Check” and alternatively pressing F7. It will in turn run a separate spell checker window, similar to Microsoft Word. When exiting the spell checker window, auto highlight incorrect spellings will be active, denoted by red squiggles. You then have two options: You can re-run the spell checker again by pressing F7 or “Spell Check” button OR you can right mouse click on the incorrect word and the context menu will give you 5 suggestions to select from or run spell checker, like Microsoft Word offers. While the Spell Checker is active (visible or not) a “Disable Spell Check” button will appear on the top menu bar to completely turn off spell checking until you turn it back on again. This software uses only the UK English Dictionary, there are no plans to offer to use other dictionaries at this time. Special Consideration: Within the “SpellCheck” folder is a file called “AddedWords.dat”, this is where you can add your own words (each on a separate line) or allow the end user the ability to add their own. If you wish to allow users to add their own then WRITE permission will need to be granted on the file. Yes no problem, in the next release I will put the full change log in the documentation-example folder.

I have enabled the spellcheck in the config file but when I run Exam WritePad the option for spellcheck doesn't appear and F7 does nothing. Have I missed something? Enabling Bold/italic/Underline in same config file seems to work fine.

This is possible using the Character Map button but this is also very big so a lot of time is wasted scrolling through. Also, clicking select then copy is more time consuming. I was wondering if it's possible (maybe from a config setting) to put a list of specific letters and their accents on a bar somewhere. Down the side? Categorised by the language. Maybe have a drop down box to select the language to show specific accents. Just a thought.

Just the one that is included in the download. I jsut ran Exam WritePad from the folder I downloaded and extracted it to and amended the config file that was there.
