I’d need to see a screenshot of the error so I know where to start looking to see if there is an issue.

Any chance you can replicate it know exactly what it says?

Should be easy I'll try tomorrow

Well, it was something very simple like "failed to print" with a close button and X that did nothing

I got locked out of a machine today stuck at a print error box. I couldn't clear the message to get back to the program to quit. I couldn't get to task manager to force quit it. Powered down with the power button and forced shutdown of the user in the end.

Hi, I've still not received anything from you in terms of the error message so I will go ahead and close this one as a one off, no-one else has reported it.

Change Log (Now included within the documentation folder is a FULL change log)

2.2.0.3 (Current)

ADDED: A start-up check has been added to detect that the config is present, this has been done to stop candidates deleting the file to alter the way EWP operates to obtain more features than intended to, which were set by the Exams Officer. In previous versions EWP would still run without a config file loading a default set of values which would result in EWP not being more open then normally required. So remember the config file must always reside in the same folder as the EWP application. If you rename the application, you must also rename the config to the same name.

2.2.0.2

ADDED: Allow ‘Split Screen’ feature to run o monitors lower than 1680px wide. This might not give you expect results but should be OK on 1280px wide monitors. Set the config option called “AllowSplitScreenLowerResolutions” to 1 to allow.

2.2.0.1

CHANGED: If you changed the Exam Board List in the config, it might not print the coversheet. You will now be given a message window to tell you what the issue is.

Thanks for this - what great service. If only all devs acted so promptly ;)

Hi @ass17,

Firstly, myself and our exam officers love your software! Huge thanks.

Did someone at some point ask about changing the font colour or adding a line of text when the student enters extra time? During our Mocks we've asked students to type 'Extra Time' in there work to do this. I seem to remember if being requested but can't see it in the latest change log?

Thanks

I do remember a written conversation yes but I’ve not been able to do anything as yet as I can’t find an easy way to do it.

I’m all open to suggestions but the issue will be when changing the font when calling extra time.

I could certainly add in a text string to denote “Extra Time” but to change the colour and to get it to hold is s different story.

Hi all,

The next release of EWP will be the last one.... that supports Windows XP and the .NET 4.0 framework.... Got you all going them didnt I? I bet you all thought I was finishing the project, not a chance :-)

With the increased security risk that .NET Framework 4.0 poses over later versions and the fact that I wish to use new features like Long File Path names etc... I will be pushing up the .NET version to 4.7.2 which means Windows 7 SP1 or higher will be required.

Future plans (To infinity and beyond)

Ideally I would like to be cross-platform and using the upcoming .NET Core 3 framework seems appealing but I would have to rewrite everything, so this is not happening, for the time being, never say never.

So in reality it will continue as a Windows only application for the foreseeable.

I'm also getting to the point where I have exhausted all I can from the ExtendedRichEdit control developed by Microsoft in 2008! So in order for me to take this one stage further, I will have to purchase a 'WordDoc/RichText' style control from a third party, but this comes at a cost and as yet I haven't received any donations to date to support this purchase. People have promised but not delivered. So please if you can donate to the cause I would be most grateful. https://www.paypal.me/ExamWritePad

You just have your first donation, £10. The amount of time and effort you have put into this for the community is exceptional. In particular my feature request for split screen last term was turned around very quickly and went down very well with the exams and SEN departments. Without this feature, we'd have had to use Word, which in my experience isn't particularly stable when 'crippled' to remove the proofing features. £10 of my own cash in lieu of all the headaches you saved me having to deal with Word issues during our mock season is worth every penny!

I hope others using EWP consider a donation too. It's all too easy to use these free tools without realising the effort that goes in behind the scenes.

Received and much appreciated!!

I’ve invested plenty of spare time in this and it has been very enjoyable to help deliver what people want :-)

Is Patreon a possibility?, I can't donate on that link without signing up to PayPal and have had problems with them in the past.

Cheers, on topic I've had a reasonable search but how do people deal with clearing the previous students exam from a laptop if it's been saved locally instead of to USB? I'm thinking the next student to use the laptop could open it from within examwritepad

Yes this will always be an issue and it’s difficult for EWP to delete it on closing as you might need to open it back up again.

The way we get round the issue it to script the home directory so then when a user logins in, even if it’s the same username, a unique folder is created on a file server with the computer name and date/time.

So if Joe bloggs logs on to a “laptop1” with the exam username/password at 12:30 on 7th Jan 2019, their home folder path would look like:

\\fileserver\users\laptop1-07-01-2019-12-30-15

The home folder path would be mounted as H:\ and force EWP to default save into it.

We also redirect the desktop to home folder so if they save it to desktop it gets saved on the unique network location.

When the user logs off, and another user logs in, their home folder is always different.

We use a GPO logoff script that robocopys anything *.examtext to a file server.

We're still having issues with sending documents to a printer with bold text but it comes out as normal text. Is it anything to do with the config profile that changes certain things when sent to printer? Once it is sent to a printer, the text is converted to normal text and loses it's bold.

No worries I will take a look

I have fixed this issue and also managed to cleanup the code to as I had found that it was doing something’s twice over, so incessant :-)

I will be releasing a new version on Friday once I have tested it with out mock exams tomorrow.

Change Log

2.2.2.2

FINAL RELEASE: Arrangements have been made to make this the final release for Windows XP. This is the last version that will use .NET Framework 4.0 before I move up to .NET 4.7

2.2.2.1

ADDED: Splash screen now contains a warning text label in red and will display if the computer is running battery and it goes lower than 25%.

2.2.2.0

FIXED: When battery percentage went below 25% the battery graphic image stayed at 50% graphic on the main menu bar.

2.2.1.9

ADDED: The main EWP help button on the menu bar has been also added to the splash screen so you can access information and web links without having to get to the main window.

2.2.1.8

UPDATED: UK English Dictionary has been updated to v01-01-2019 as provided via: https://extensions.libreoffice.org/extensions/english-dictionaries/

2.2.1.7

FIXED: When using a domain computer over WiFi, if logon scripts are used to map printers AND have logon scripts set to run ‘asynchronously’, EWP would throw an exception if you try to print at the same time as the printers are in the process of being mapped. The error has been suppressed but in reality you would never login, and finish typing your document within a few minutes and try to print it, while the background scripts are being processed.

2.2.1.6

CHANGED: Candidate Information window now contains a character limit for all but one of the text boxes, the max limit of characters is now displayed underneath the text description for each text box. This has been done so they fit within the coversheet boxes and don’t overflow.

2.2.1.5

FIXED: The EWP application becomes unresponsive while it waits for interaction/messages from the printer to connect to or render a print job. In some instances people may think they have not pressed the print button and thus press it multiple times. Now implemented is once a print button is pressed is disables the Candidate Information window until the print process has completed.

2.2.1.4

FIXED: When multiple fonts are used in a EWP document the Screen Option Window would only display the last font used in the document. Because this is only geared for a single font use, a function has been added to detect the total number of fonts used and if greater than 1, the current font in use text label will now read “(Multiple fonts in use)”.

2.2.1.3

FIXED: Entry code for JCQ didn’t not fit inside the cover-sheet box if over 10 characters and is now limited to 12 characters.

2.2.1.2

FIXED: When printing the cover-sheet or document, the ‘successfully printed’ acknowledgement window would disappear behind the Candidate Information window and the focus would always be set to the Candidate screen if lost. So basically you could not continue.

2.2.1.1

FIXED: When copying and pasting very large chunks of text the double line formatting would sometime revert to single line spacing.

2.2.1.0

CHANGED: All message boxes are now created with the same function, so there is consistency and importantly appear top most all the time, every time.

2.2.0.9

FIXED: The date displayed on the status bar was set to “d/mm/yyyy” when it should be “dd/mm/yyyy” for consistency.

2.2.0.8

FIXED: When selecting a previous version to restore, it never did a word and character count until you type something.

2.2.0.7

FIXED: Previous version text box that displays the contents of each previous version was editable so if by accident you edited the text in the text box it would resort exactly as shown. The text box is now set to read only.

2.2.0.6

FIXED: Previous version drop-down list acted as if it required text input thus only dropping down the selection list when you click on the drop-down arrow to the far right. This has now been changed to a drop down list so that clicking anywhere on the drop-down will activate the drop-down selection list.

2.2.0.5

FIXED: The verification check when opening from the ‘Default Open Path’. If the path didn’t exist EWP would try and create the path, which is irrelevant because if the path doesn’t exist, neither will there be any files within the path. If the open path doesn’t exist, it reverts to the desktop.

2.2.0.4

ADDED: A verification check when saving/auto-saving, so if the save path doesn’t exist, it will default to the desktop. This is useful if you are saving to a remote/network location and it suddenly goes offline at any point. The Auto-save message dialog is now more descriptive to accommodate this issue.
