MrWu Posted March 21, 2019 Posted March 21, 2019 The candidate window is there for a reason so as to enforce that the candidate fills out all fields necessary as required by the exam board. Just a few questions, which version of ExamWritePad are you using? Does the freeze happen before the printer selection window or after selecting a printer? The reason I ask is that it will only seem to freeze after printer selection, if communication to the printer is slow, for exam printing to a WiFi printer that is connected to a print server. Other than that the printer selection window is always forced to the top above all other windows. Hi it's version 2.3.9.0 The canditdate screen freezes after pressing print (normally the windows pop up dialogue will pop up to select printer) - on problematic PCs this never appears. Was wondering whether the print dialogue box was hidden behind examspad but looking at taskmanager it appears not so... Printer is connected wired Ethernet, I might change the switch port to the printer and see if it improves things Thanks for your help

Printer is connected wired Ethernet, I might change the switch port to the printer and see if it improves things Thanks for your help Hi, OK, thanks for the info, you will need to use the the latest version 2.4.2.2 if your school are using the EXam Board Cambridge (CIE) as the cover sheet has changed. Please try this version, also with this version is the config option to show the Taskbar and disable TopMost, so at least this way when you test EWP if the printer selection window is behind you should see a taskbar icon for it. If it doesn't appear then there is a communication issue. Nothing to do with EWP as it uses the standard .Net Framework Print Dialog call. Other .net programs would be experiencing a similar issue too. Let me know what your outcome is and if you fixed it. Thanks

MrWu Posted March 28, 2019 Posted March 28, 2019 Hi Just a quick question with the autosave facility on Examwritepad, on occasions when student crashes out for some reason, we have a teacher PC thats linked to all the students homedrives where they can extract the last autosave and print the document for the student. on some occasions the autosave copy on the server is different to the version currently on the student'd machine? That is if we look at the file on the mapped home drive on the student's computer it reads 50kb and on the server hosting the home drive it's 0kb with no text?

Honestly not sure about this one, but I'm currently writing into EWP a full debug for every single function and procedure it uses, so I can trap every single error that may arise. When this is done you would activate it via the 'DebugApplication' config option and go into the users temp folder to see the html file that is generated. Watch this space for when it is released.

Not even thought about it, but given that .NET framework is moving towards .Net Core, which is cross platform, there may well be a version for linux, adroid, windows macOS etc... I will keep everyone posted on this but likelyhood I will not have anything tangible to test until 2020.

Updating our exam laptops in prep and getting The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. which is apparently something to do with C libraries being outdated? The last version we loaded was 2.3.0.0

Student will put them on a USB but I don't want to have to clear down each machine after exams? I trying to make my setup as hands off as possible also I don't want spell check? Or would it be possible at the end of a day to run a scheduled script to look for the backup file form cached profiles every morning to start the exam day fresh?

If you want to hands-off and script stuff, you're either looking at networking the machines and have them write to a network share, and either script permission changes or disable/enable the account. Realistically we want them as locked-down as possible, so all wireless networking (wlan, bluetooth, wwan) are disabled and we go in with a USB stick at the end of each exam. It's a bit of a pain, sometimes, especially when there's a really big exam and a lot of concessions, but overall I think it's the better solution than to open up potential holes with leaving WLAN enabled (e.g. mobile phone hotspots)

The questions is does it mater if they can access their own work. But they should be to busy accessing in the current exam.
Garacesh Posted April 4, 2019 Posted April 4, 2019 I do tend to earmark specific machines for specific users for the duration of exams season, just in case I forget to delete the script, but since I print it off and it gets submitted along with all the written papers, it doesn't matter if they make any edits after-the-fact because we don't take or send another copy. Does it matter? Probably. I'd imagine there's some fringe scenario where they have a Chemistry paper followed by a Biology paper and you could possibly have a bit of an overlap in data. Same for English Reading and then Writing.

EWP only gets rid of the auto backup files not the saved files. What we do is when a student logs onto a laptop, the home directory and desktop are mapped to an area that is generated with a path that is created with a time stamp. This way every home directory is unique. Otherwise you would have to script something at log off to clear up areas where a user might save to. 1

This way every home directory is unique. That's actually pretty clever, but what happens if there's an issue that causes the laptop to power down? Though, I suppose you can just copy the file to the new directory..
