We have recently moved from onsite Eclipse which was always fine using the old Silverlight interface. Never really had a problem with it but sales convinced our Liberians to move across as the new version is HTML5 and is wonderful and does so much more etc. etc.

Anyway we have moved across and have had nothing but problems since. The speed of the HTML5 interface is so much slower than Silverlight uses a lot of CPU (more than watching a HD video on YouTube)

We have a 1Gbps internet connection so our internet is nice and nippy, we have put every exclusion possible so Eclipse does not touch our proxy and goes straight out to the internet but the problems persist.

I was wondering how many people are using the hosted Eclipse with the HTML5 interface and if so are you happy with the speed and general functionality?

Thanks very much

MicroLib are very good at taking backwards steps! The silverlight version was much worse than the previous version as well. I daren't upgrade a second time.

We have the HTML5 hosted version, don't really use it as their support is worse than useless (still not got any users imported) and it is unbearably slow. We are giving up with it and moving to another system (as yet unknown, but the contract end coincides with the appointment of a new librarian)

Thanks very much for this info, please do let me know when you find out what you are moving to and if its any better :-)

They have just announced that they will not release the HTML 5 version to self hosted. This after me bugging them for the last 8 months about getting rid of Silverlight and moving to HTML versions and them telling me that they would release it as soon as possible. So I now have no local upgrade path and a buggy Silverlight version that they have obviously no interest in developing. I will speak to my account manager later but I am very pissed with them right now esp after reading your comments about hosted.

Anyone know much about Oliver

Thanks for the reply. Yes I got the feeling they would announce this soon when speaking to their support during our migration to the hosted version I asked when would we have received it onsite if we did not move and they said we are not telling people officially but most likely never. They basically want the guaranteed revenue and control of hosted but then when things go slow they put it down to proxy settings or internet connections or their favourite "environmental" factors.

Not looked at Oliver but I will be soon by the looks of it, but do let me know what the account manager says.

Cheers

We've just moved from Oliver to Eclipse.

Whilst Eclipse has its issues, Oliver has a fair few more.

Softlink support has always been poor for us.

Oliver relies on Java and the GUI has never had any work on it in the 6 years we had it.

Our librarian has raised her concerns about the new HTLM5 version of MLS system as she is aware that others are having issues with performance on their MLS hosted version.

As we host ours internally we are not affected YET! But doing a little investigating about why this system is worse our searches pointed to a possible local anti virus causing the problem but at this stage we can not test. Can someone that is using the new hosted version please test with the AV paused or disabled on the system you are using it on and if you have in-stream AV on your firewall it I would say it would be worth paying that at the same time.

Ha, I wondered if I'd done the right thing upgrading ours to the Silverlight version late in its life, then cancelling the support contract. I find it works pretty well - as well as the old version but obviously shame it needs a plugin. We have to support Silverlight anyway due to SfB management interface so not an issue.

We won't be going hosted, not a chance. Syncing student details to a third party is currently something I do with great trepidation.

We are on the HTML5 hosted version and we are also experiencing significant speed problems recently. MLS just tell us it is our firewall, proxy, network or some other factor but it is definitely not their problem. We have applied all the exceptions and whitelisted the addesses in our proxy but it has made no difference. I am following with interest! I will be at a Eclipse user group meeting later this month and will certainly raise it with their rep, but I suspect they won't be able to help. What can we do to apply pressure to MLS?

We wondered about going hosted due to the amount of problems we've had with it on premises - glad we decided not to now (too expensive).

Have any of you with performance issues with HTML5 tried it on a bog standard internet connection, eg from a home computer to see what its like there?

I know our Librarians were at an Eclipse user group meeting in March where a lot of issues were raised (mostly around performance).

It was especially amusing to discover they'd set a good chunk of their Azure instances to spin down at 3pm to save cash. They're apparently planning to change this to 4pm after vigorous feedback was received.

Whats the alternative to MLS?

Softlink Oliver is one. Its what we use here. Our Librarian at one school gets on with it well, and we've just moved to hosted with them also.

The other middle school uses MLS hosted, and they are complaining of performance issues also. I have a document of things to change here now, firewall/AV exceptions etc...

This is exactly the same for us. I have followed pages and pages of settings and exceptions. I mean how many webpages have you had to setup nowadays to bypass antivirus this is simple unheard of as far as I'm concerned its madness.

Hay I have even tried it on a computer with no antivirus and it makes no difference just look at the CPU usage it must be badly coded.

I have tried it on my home computer with fibre broadband and its the same sometimes okay but often very slow and that's not even using circulate to issue/return books. I'm just glad I've found other people with similar issues so when they tell me its environmental I can say yes your environment!

Thanks everyone so far for your comments and keep me updated to how you get on. I also will be at the MLS meeting so I look forward to asking them then also.

Cheers

We originally moved to the online hosted MLS running on Silverlight 5 as part of BSF, and it always seemed sluggish at the best of times.

Since we've now been switched to the HTML5 version, our librarian has been complaining about the slowness of the system, and continuous warnings, and I had been asked by MLS to add the website to our AV (Sophos) (As MLS claimed AV could be scanning the scripts they use as they are now no longer hidden by Silverlight and this can slow the site down), which I have done, and it's not made any difference!

I've now been sent links to four different MLS support pages ranging from deleting temp IE files, to whitelisting URLs on our Proxy (Lightspeed).

Has anybody had any look with this?

This is almost identical to the experience we have had. I have tried everything they have advised and nothing has made any difference. They are putting it down to "environmental" factors at our end!

The fact is, it is only a website not accessing anything local, so there should be absolutely nothing to do with local AV etc that needs changing. As to claims that it is "scanning the scripts" slowing it down, how much local script do they need for a library system? Everyone else seems to manage writing websites that just work so something must seriously be wrong with them.

The only time I have had to disable Sophos to use a website is the web management for our Hitachi SAN, which is some sort of horrible IIS application installed on a server, and I can just about cope with that because it's actually accessing local devices, not just looking at a database of books.

Interesting I should stumble across this thread, one of our librarians has complained about the system being slow since HTML5 and has forwarded some instructions from MLS to do with firewalls, proxies etc. I will leave it for now and follow this thread..

Our librarian has also been complaining out the poor performance of the HTML5 system. Their support is also shockingly bad, they just ignore your emails or leave you on hold for ages.

I'm also not a fan of any company who tells you disable security features to get their product working. How about you just write software that works!

Wow I wasn't expecting this many Schools to be having this problem as I was made to feel like we were the only School to have an issue so I am feeling very relieved now. If anyone has any resolution please let me know and I will do the same.

I agree. Too be fair, I'm only paying them lip-service by following their requests and then passing it back to our librarian who deals with their awful support service.

Interestingly, my son was looking at jobs in that area and came across a helpdesk position at their Marple branch (not sure if they have others). Naturally, I got looking on glass door to see what they were like to work for...: https://www.glassdoor.co.uk/Reviews/Micro-Librarian-Systems-Reviews-E1493878.htm

Sounds like a bunch of the support staff walked out, and the new staff have recently been put up to doing glowing reviews (check the dates on the positive reviews). If they're having internal conflicts, I'll be recommending to our librarian to steer clear.
