gaz350b Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 So, out of curiosity how much are you planning to spend per Desktop this year? We are planning on replacing 145 Desktops across our site this Academic year (our financial year aligns to academic year) and will most likely use the same platform we chose last year, Dell 9020 Micro units with Dell P2314H screens which were a pain in the arse the 1st week we got them kids were moving them about all the time but as I expected they tend not to even touch them any more.
forkies Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 We are probably doing about the same as you however not as many, just replacing admin PCs and maybe ssd and ram in some student machines as they still run fine. We get different screens though, so we can mount the micro units to the back of the screen, then the kids can't move them.
gaz350b Posted November 12, 2015 Author Posted November 12, 2015 the micros they left alone, it was the screens! they rotate through 90 degrees!
elsiegee40 Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 (edited) If budgets are tight you should contact @ICTDirect_Dave Their refurbs come with full warranties and have equipped many a school. And might even leave you with some pennies over for extra goodies Edited November 12, 2015 by elsiegee40 1
3s-gtech Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 ICT Direct + BenQ 1080p screens + SSDs = value. Each unit roughly £330 tops. 1
PotNoodleTech Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 (edited) Been getting new Dell OptiPlex 3020 with SSD direct from Dell. Can't find any better value anywhere else. Edited November 13, 2015 by PotNoodleTech
DalekSec Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 Been getting new Dell OptiPlex 3020 with SSD direct from Dell. Can't find ant better value anywhere else. We got the same summer just gone. i5s, SSDs and SFF plus new much clearer monitors as they are for Digital Photography. (They always get the new PCs as they use Photoshop etc.)
VeryPC_Anthony_L Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 Hi all, interesting poll. For those who have said they look at less than £300 is this including or excluding a monitor? If you have not already looked at the VeryPC offerings we have a great selection of computers, laptops and tablets with some more to be launched. If anyone is interested in getting a quote on anything feel free to get in touch. Anthony
Geoff Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 Spending ~£600 (cost varies on individual users needs) a workstation here. Rolling replacements after their extended warranty runs out (5 years). Not a school!
localzuk Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 We only really buy all in one machines here now (well, except for thin clients), so the price per unit is a little higher than split systems. We also buy i5 with SSD, so that puts the price up a little too!
Sagima Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 Sort of depends how you look at it. We do £400-£450 for the PC, £120-140 for the screen (the only bit the user seems to care about) and whatever a 5 year nbd onsite warranty is (£30?)
Passat1983ICTech Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 I would send this much 300-£349 go ssd or even i5 and send a bit more
duzzie Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 We usually go for i5, ssd and 8gb memory. What life expectancy do most people expect from there machines? We are on a 6 year rolling programme, but governors are asking why cant they last longer. 6 years seems a long time to me as it was 3/4 years. Who knows what technology will be like in 6 years and what software packages we will need the machines to run effectively.
MrPstv Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 We use ICTDirect.. SSD, 8 GB ram, Extended warranty. Happy Dayz... 1
mikeprice Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 I replace desktops and monitors as separate items so the cost is low for the desktop Also we use very little power - I am just in the middle of imaging a Stone 2.3GHz celeron which is fine for anything other than teachers desktops judging by the other 5 that are still in use! - which also means that we go with cheap replacements which will probably outlast me (5 years to retirement!!)
TIOAOA Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 This year I plan to spend my limited budget on a few rolls of Gaffa tape to keep everything together. Then if there is anything left I'm going to break my ICT-Direct virginity I think. Times are tight 1
pcstru Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 I think this year we have done around 120 desktops, ICT Direct i7 and i5 refurbished to which we add SSD drives. Next year looks like it might be excitingly ... none! 1
ICTDirect_Dave Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 I'm going to break my ICT-Direct virginity We'll try and make it a memorable experience
vyperz Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 had budgeted to replace one ICT suite of 30 PC's this year, but decided to use the budget to put 120Gb SSD's in most of the PC's in the school - makes a HUGE difference and will buy me another year or two on the budget
mrforgetful Posted December 16, 2015 Posted December 16, 2015 Surprised at the amount people spend on monitors - we usually just go for some ~£90 decent brand, Iiyama/Philips whatever there is at the time.

For a lot of people (well here anyway) the monitor IS the computer. Get them something nice and shiny and they are far more satisfied than they would be if I had spent that money on bit more RAM

Iain.Faulkner Posted December 16, 2015 Posted December 16, 2015 2 years ago we implemented a 6 year replacement program which seems to be working well for us. More or less all the rubbish we had (PC's which were 10 years old) has now gone and pretty much all PC's are now in warranty (with the exception of about 60). Hoping next year to replace either 80 or 110 PC's, depending on what budget we are allocated.
