I'm curious though, the last time I looked (Granted it was a good 10 years ago now) the schools were run very different with mainly external help bought in. Is that still mainly the case?
TC-1927 Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 At primary level, the LAs tend to timetable technicians (or at least attend schools on a ticket based system). Secondaries mostly employ their own geeks as far as I'm aware! 1
claireadams Posted September 29, 2015 Author Posted September 29, 2015 Seems different then unless I went to unusual schools. I know they stated I looked 'very shocked' when they had to ask permission to get someone in and fix a broken backup server, they were external support teams themselves.

However, with cutbacks etc external support contracts seemed to get cut pretty sharpish - especially considering the service that some schools received was no longer adequate for the explosion of new equipment that we've experienced over the last ten years. We have at least five times as many PCs, plus all of the new tech that's come along in that time. Very tough externally supporting it all well on a limited budget. 1

MkII Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 I'm in Wales just over the border. The local LA primaries here were all farmed out to external support, but were brought back in house a couple of years ago and are supported centrally. All Secondaries have their own techs, with the southernmost supporting their neighboring primary cluster.

Schools usually just talk to us directly because it turns out we're usually somewhat better at supporting them than the LA.

Oooo that's controversial in Swansea ;-) I've found Swansea LEA to be very supportive. Of course you might not be talking about Swansea. GJE
