Hi All,

 

I have notice the Meraki Systems Manager MDM is free for up to 100 devices. I am thinking about getting it however we don't use meraki wifi points. Do i need a meraki WiFi system in order to use SM? Or can it just install on a server and we role it out to wifi clients?

No you don't need any Meraki kit. It's cloud based so you don't need to install it on a server. Sign up and it's got pretty comprehensive instructions on how to add devices- the easiest I find is (if you've only got a few devices to do this to) going to m.meraki.com and entering your unique code. You are then prompted to install a profile which gives Meraki rights to control the device.

I'm not 100% sure, but even with the 100 free accounts you may be limited with what you can do with the new IOS9 features - you may need the paid for version to enable certain restrictions. I am not a Meraki MDM customer, but i've read an article lately about it.

The 100 free devices are fully functional, you just need to start paying if you go over 100 (at least that's how it is right now).

 

We use it for school owned (mobile/tablet/laptop) devices.

We're on a 'legacy' licence, so we're using Meraki for our 1000+ devices for free, but the new iOS 9 features aren't available to us.

Yep, the free legacy licence with Meraki sucks with iOS 9. Big disappointment of this change.

Yes, you can do it with configurator and some custom mobileconfig XML files. Examples of the new iOS 9 lockdown features as mobileconfig can be found on this site:

Luckily we have less than 100 devices, just looked at our meraki mdm setup, upgraded to SME, and enabled all the iOS9 restrictions. All i need now is a restriction to stop them being able to use the alarm clock and all our iPad woes will finally be over!

Trying out this MDM, is there no way to stop them opening Settings etc? Also I went to deploy an app and I had to go through some prompts on the iPad, so I guess whenever I deploy apps I need to have all the iPads with me and then go through them all clicking 'Install'?
