Many are really good but Fool Me Once was mediocre. Michelle Keegan doesn't convince as the ex-army type, the story is full of illogical plot twists and Joanna Lumley was wasted as a ludicrously over-the-top baddie.

 

I'll give you that - massive plot holes in that one

Just finished Obliterated on Netflix. Trailer NSFW for ALL the reasons.

 

After saving Las Vegas from a nuke, a special ops team parties hard... but have to get it together when they find out they "defused" a decoy.

 

A fun watch. Maybe a couple of eps too long and a late reveal was guessable and, though one of the "But why?" questions about it gets answered, I'm not sure it all hangs together. The reveal was also a bit disappointing for other reasons but clever for the same reasons. It was strange to see Costa Ronin, who played the guy on the outside trying to get his criminal mastermind partner out in "Endgame" swapping to the locked up criminal mastermind role. Very sweary, quite violent, lots of drugs and a fair bit of nudity - surprisingly more male than female.

Anyone without access to Disney who liked the sound of "Extraordinary" - the comedy about a rare super-powerless young woman in a world where everyone gets a power around their 18th should be able to find ion ITVX starting next week.

That sent me on a search for the Kickstarter Thunderbirds episodes, which I've never been able to track down. Apparently they were on Britbox (had a look but couldn't find them) but they are definitely showing as available on ITVX.

Watched nomadland last night - recorded from somewhere

 

 

Strange film - kinda like the opposite of an action film

 

it is about a woman who is widowed in a Nevada

she gives up her job and home and buys a camper van and travels the country

she finds a man who has been doing the same for a while and has set up a self help group for "Nomad" to help each other and give advise

 

very slow film in which little happens except people meeting each other and chatting

 

it is very slow but a wonderful film

Masters of the Air

 

Good, but not on the same level as Band of Brothers as people were hoping for. The characters just aren't as likeable and lots of cliche catchphrases. Would recommend though, it's well made and has some good tense moments. Up to episode 4 so far.

Watched the limited series One Day on Netflix about two university students who meet during the leavers' party and subsequently meet up again over the years. It's an on/off relationship drama but very well done and quite a lot better than the film. Certain scenes strongly resonated with me.

Perhaps I was hoping for too much, but these were very slight and not really worth the wait. I also saw most of the first ever ep of "real" Thunderbirds, which stood up surprisingly well. ITVX seems to have a lot of Gerry Anderson's shows though I suspect that some might be better off as fond memories.

Crashing Eid (Netflix)

 

 

A Saudi divorcee proposes to her British Pakistani boyfriend just before heading home for Eid. When he decides to surprise her he discovers that he is the wrong sort of Muslim and that his family feels the same about her.

 

Amiable enough but would have worked better as a movie with fewer subplots. If the trailer piques your interest, you may enjoy it.

I have watched too. It's more than just depressing, it's well produced, not overly politicised, at times emotional and it's scary how many reminders of things we went through but so quickly forgot. With 2 in-laws working in the NHS, one A&E lead and other a midwife, some of it wasn't a shock just refresh of what we knew from insiders. Of all the simple lessons to learn PPE is a big one. When the enquiry is published, it will be worth reflecting on the dramatisation and seeing if it captures it all.

Mrs mikeprice's son works in the NHS and he said very little about it at the time

of course we couldn't even see them much - but he rang quite often

 

He was in the middle of all the problems as he was promoted to manage and work in the operating theatre recovery rooms that were converted into emergency ICT COVID wards

 

When they were talking about them bending some rules so that someone could see both young kids just before they died (or something like that) where the rules said only 2 people and hence only one kid plus adult then that rang very true

 

Out youngest grandson was born into all that mess but had problems and couldn;t leave hospital for many months - including over CHristmas

We set up out bubble so that we went to their house to look after the older 2 grandkids while their Mum and Dad went to hospital to see the baby - at least one of them visited very day for several hours but on Christmas they wanted to visit together

AT this point the elder 2 had had a brother for several months and hadn;t seem him even once due to Covid rules

Which is rather difficult to explain to a SEN kid who knows about a brother but hasn;t seen him

and now only seems to have one parent at a time and both are stressed out

 

While we were looking after them we got a phone call to chuck the kids into the car and get to the Children's hospital as the staff were bending the rules so they could see the baby for the first time

 

Mrs mikeprice's background on her phone is still a picture of all 5 of them taken in the hospital by one of the nurses

 

Still bring a tear to my eyes when I think of all that

Started watching Constellation on Apple.

Apple seems to be knocking it out the park with all the scifi recently.

Currently watching Shogun on Disney+ and it's very easy to see why it has a 99% score on Rotten Tomatoes!

 

Everything about it is just stunningly well done. The characters are superb, the backgrounds/locations are immense and the acting is simply flawless.

 

The level of detail and intricacy in almost every scene is more than a lot of other shows can manage over an entire episode.

 

My only minor irk is that I wish the series used the actual names of the real historical figures the characters are based off of - although I know this was not necessarily a design choice by the current crew given it's based off a previous series, which itself is based off of a novel.

I'm excited to watch this. James Clavell did a marvellous job of painting the world in the novel and I've thoroughly enjoyed reading it over the years. It remains the single MOST frustrating conclusion to a book that I've ever read, however. I'll be interested to see what the tv series does with it.

I haven't personally read the book (or seen the previous series), but based on conversations with those who have they've said that some of the characters in the Disney version don't come across exactly as they do in the book, although they have all preferred the Disney versions of said characters as they felt they were more 'fitting' with the world around them.

Finished the second (and last) season of How I Met Your Father (Disney+). The first season was OK-ish, but the second really picked up with the writers and actors all seeming to get the characters to gel. If the first season had been as good, maybe it would still be going. Still, at least they didn't get the chance to fumble the ending like the "Mother" did.

 

 

The Marlow Murder Club (UKTVPlay). "Cosy Crime" series which sees three ladies (including a Moneypenny and a Doctor) getting together to solve what turns out to be a series of murders. The ladies of the house loved this; I found it fairly entertaining. 2 movie length episodes with a second season to follow. Can't find a proper trailer, which is odd as we heard about it via a trailer at the cinema.

 

Also started watching:

 

Project Lazarus Season 2 (Sky) which somehow makes the stakes even higher. Unfortunately Mme LeMarchand isn't a fan, so it will take some time to catch up.

 

 

The Brothers Sun (Netflix). When the head of Taiwan's most powerful Triad barely survives an assassination attempt his oldest son heads to the US to try to keep is younger brother safe. A younger brother who has no idea about the family "business". So far, a lot of fun. TRAILER VERY VIOLENT AND SWEARY.

 

 

Avatar: The Last Airbender (Netflix). Had high hopes for this, but haven't made it past the first episode.

The gentleman was superb.. really enjoyed it.. probably my favourite this year alongside slow horses.

 

Just starting 3 body problem.. going in it blind which is always the best.

 

Finished halo series 2 too.. glad I never played all the games to get annoyed.. think I played 2 years ago but can't remember much. Seems to leave open for series 3 to be like the game.
