Giant hogweed warning after children hurt in Bolton - BBC News Surprised more people don't know about this plant. The sap is poisonous on contact with the skin and is phototoxic, meaning it reacts with light to cause painful and severe burns and blisters which can re-occur for up to two years. A legacy left by Victorian gardeners because it looked nice. When I worked lineside on a heritage railway, we had a patch that had it's quantity and location logged as a hazardous material and were told not to approach it under any circumstances. These kids on the other-hand were playing amongst a patch of the stuff! 1
elsiegee40 Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 To be honest, it's hardly news that Hogwweed burns. If you see giant cow parsley, you stay away from it. I had it drummed into me as a child and drummed it in to my own kids 1

GeekyPete Posted July 10, 2015 Posted July 10, 2015 We've had Hog Weed along the Tees for about 20 years now. Made the news at first now everyone knows to steer clear. interesting list from @JATSO, I never knew that narcissus was Daffodil and that poisonous.

To quote wiki "Ricinus is extremely allergenic, and has an OPALS allergy scale rating of 10 out of 10. The plant is also a very strong trigger for asthma, and allergies to Ricinus are commonplace and severe." Just what you need in a public place. The seeds are also highly toxic if eaten. My sister and I used to play with the seeds when were children, but we were sensible enough not to put them in our mouths. I doubt that many people even know what the plant is and would probably try the seeds if there were some. The council's reaction? The bus station is operated by Centro, so talk to them. Centro's reaction? The flower boxes belong to Dudley Council, so talk to them.

It seems as though those days are long gone when Dudley's parks and gardens department was the envy of the Midlands - we had the best traffic islands and roadside displays for miles!
