aleach2 Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 Our SAN has had one failure in 6 years, our NAS has had two in six years and our only server with HDDs has had 4 drives fail in six years. Not bad really. HDDs seem to be much more reliable these days.
Joanne Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 (edited) If I were you, I'd be asking dell to supply enough disks to replace the whole raid, because assuming they are all the same age and they've all done a similar amount of read/write, it wouldn't be uncommon for the stress of recreating the raid to tip another disk, and then another, and so on, over the edge. If you're lucky you'll get all of them replaced before the last one conks out from the stress of N-times raid rebuilds, but if you aren't... Wow way to stress me out!!! Update: the man from Dell is checking some logs created by a nifty little program of theirs... just to make sure nothing else is wrong. If there is he'll give me a call. Sagima Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 Regarding desktop hdds - Until this year we only lost 2 or three a year in laptops and desktops around the school. This year the hdd of more than half of the optiplex 760s (purchased august 2009) we have here failed - about 40 or so by christmas and another dozen since then. We ended up replacing them all with £40 ssds.

Hopefully all will be good. Only had a RAID fail to rebuild once. Restarted it and it was fine then... thank eff!

NB9457 Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 I was at a School for a year with 4 RM servers and replaced 4 HDDs, they were only 2.5 years old. Baffled me as to why the drives were 2.5" in 3.5" bays too, I'm just pleased they no longer sell hardware, it was all terrible.

mrbios Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 Probably about 15 drives in total or there abouts over the course of the past 5-6 years. Some of those were Seagate 3TB drives though (The ones famed for failing regularly) quite a few WD 2TB drives too, 5 year warranties though so they were easily replaced. The worst was 2 drives failing at the same time in a RAID10, luckily not a pair in the raid though.

GuyJD Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 When I worked supporting around 40 schools we'd see 2-3 server HDD failures a year, as far as I'm aware the school I work at now has never had a disk failure in the 8 years it's been here, the server room is climate controlled though.

I'm really good at checking things, but leaving one thing out.... then something will remind me.... then I'll forget to check something else! Edit: just looked back in the logs and the hard drive has been reporting problems for only 2 weeks.... not too bad then. Upgrade to SSD We havent had to worry about disk failures for years.

I'd love too, but see little point while the server is still under warranty until 2018 About £1000 at the moment for 3 x 600GB SSDs.

Seagate *are* an issue, they're ruddy awful generally. lost count of how many of our disk failures, server and end user have been down to those things!
