hardtailstar Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 I guessed that was the case, although a ballsy move considering both of them have been forging pretty decent hosting careers with the Beeb outside of Top Gear. Jeremy on the other hand as been relegated to DVD Christmas specials for a while now. My guess, if Jeremy is sacked, they'll both agree to remain with Top Gear rather than risk jeopardizing their other works with the Beeb. I think their BBC careers outside of Top Gear will still last, Just wont be on Top Gear

CAM Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 I find it funny how BBC news is tripping over its own feet reporting the whole thing, they don't even know within the same organisation whats going on so what chance do we have? They have to show a pretence of neutrality as part of the charter, even when reporting about their own organisation.

When he did the narrowboat program, he booked 6 weeks off work and filmed the series. He then went back to work (as a lorry mechanic) afterwards. He is a down to earth guy, he lives by his morals, he didnt set out to be famous. His World Record programs were to do that, go beyond what he believed possible all based around bikes, his passion.

Show can be called Power Gear, the driver behind the Stig can refuse to sign a new contract (when ever he is up). Has the BBC got a white helmet, driver gear and the word Stig licensed? I'm sure Sky or some one must be interested in taking these guys on, 3 of who are out of contract within weeks. We survived without the stig for a few weeks but that didn't feel the same and he takes up about 5 minutes of the 60 a week. They could to the exact same stunts, if they cant have the "Stig" well I am sure there are 100 other terms they can use. I can see these guys coming out with bigger pay checks and let's face it, they wont have to suffer political correctness care every 5 minutes. There are a lot more offensive shows on NON BBC channels...

If I were a cynic I would say that reporting himself to the BBC was a ploy to generate attention and get other broadcasters to get their cheque books out to sign up the guy who could take a crowd of loyal followers with him to a new show. Sky and ITV will no doubt be fighting for him, but we've also got new players such as Netflix and Amazon who might be interested too. He's got global reach with Top Gear so he'd fit with both! I'd say that Steve Coogan might be a good match to run it. He's a car person, he's a comedian and he's a writer. Clarkson still makes a "7 figure sum" yearly from the rights of the show, he sold his share, but his company still has a chunk which is what brings him the money.
mthomas08 Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 (edited) Yeah it's official so no new contract although I agree punishment was in order Guessing that is it for my BBC viewing because now with Virgin Media+Sky F1 I don't need their half hearted F1 coverage. The other show I watched has already been snapped up by another broadcaster so that leaves Crazy Fools. On that note perhaps they can get Mr T as the 3rd presenter I think he will be far more entertaining than the other suggestions I have seen. I wonder if in 12 months time if they continue "Low Gear" what the viewing numbers will be and if BBC will release that information openly. Edited March 25, 2015 by mthomas08
sonofsanta Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 I know this won't be a popular opinion in a 17 page thread backing Clarkson... but I stopped watching Top Gear a couple of years ago because it had become a parody of itself. It desperately needs some fresh ideas beyond Clarkson's schtick. Perhaps this is the chance it needs, though it's a rubbish way for it to come about. I can only hope that, in the short time remaining on his contract, they film a regeneration scene for him, Dr Who style.

Hovervan, stealth across the desert, etc. If the replacement, whoever s/he may be, can keep that air of entertainment around, then I'll carry on watching it (or at least give it a bash).. If they try and make it more serious like Fifth Gear, I'm out.
featured_spectre Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 I don't condone or defend what he did, however, the show needs to be revamped. Clarkson leaving is the ideal time to do it. He can take Hammond and May to a new broadcaster with a bigger budget, and Top gear can fritter away like the Australian and US versions have (the viewing numbers are massively lower than the UK version). That said, he could make a new show, re-brand the Stig with a new name, and slightly new look, keep the format somewhat the same, but actually reviewing cars normal people could buy as well and job done.

Oh aye, it has to remain entertainment, and there wasn't anything fundamentally wrong with what they were doing - just the fact they'd been doing it the same way for so many years whilst losing all inventiveness and just repeating the same gags more and more frequently. Nobody could restore a car for as little as they do. As for Edd Chyna, well as qualified as he is, he doesn't do the work all himself, he has a chap called Paul behind the scenes (mostly) who does a large chunk of it as well, but he doesn't want to be shown on camera as much unless there is a 2 person job to do which Ed absolutely cannot do himself. And as for the cars they "sell", they're mostly "sold" to the crew when they can't find legitimate buyers and then later put up for auction. There was a website about the show made by one of the former crew that pretty much gave away their secrets.

I do think the show could do with a bit of female presence.. Take the show a little away from the ever-infuriating 'lad banter'* and more into the realms of actual comedy.. But as long as it's still a mix of reviews, races/laps and light-hearted silliness I'll give it a few episodes to make my mind up. * You have no idea how much disdain I have for LAD Bible, UniLAD, etc. Urgh. If only I had an army of mischievous clowns...
