Garacesh Posted May 15, 2023 Posted May 15, 2023 That's the same as how I feel. A little bit of envy in there, sure, but mostly it's just.. I dunno, uncanny valley? At a distance it looks like shiny metal, but then the reflections don't move as I do and my brain goes 'whoah, hang on a minute, something doesn't add up...' When it's done on just a sword, or some other little detail, it really pops. That's where I'll be trying to do it, anyway. Swords and aquillas.

Bedders Posted June 10, 2023 Posted June 10, 2023 (edited) I've not done much painting in the last few weeks as I've been too busy. I did just order a copy of Leviathan though as it's now available! £150 from Games Workshop, or £120 from a local model shop. EDIT: One of our local model shops is releasing them in batches, and I'm watching their stock counter tick down at more than one per minute at this rate... Edited June 10, 2023 by Bedders
Garacesh Posted June 10, 2023 Posted June 10, 2023 Got mine online this morning, £120 from Wayland Games. Fighting through all the Web page errors until it finally let me check out was fun! But I've got my confirmation email and they've taken the money so that's as good as I'm going to get, I reckon!
ICTDirect_Dave Posted June 13, 2023 Posted June 13, 2023 I was super tempted to order, but resisted in the end. I've got fifteen unpainted terminators as it is, can't justify more right now. My friends and I have a little (200 subs and counting) youtube channel for all our miniature wargame and magic shenanigans and I've been editing terrain rules vids all week. One of the lads had the box on order so we'll do something on it when he gets it 1

AlistairB1983 Posted June 16, 2023 Posted June 16, 2023 Has anyone else read any of the unit cards/rules that GW have been releasing? I had a quick flick through the GSC ones last night (I have a small force of them, <1000 points worth) and was ... surprised by how very strong everything seemed to be! From the Cult Icons (i.e. banners) bringing back dead guys, to their new strategems essentially being all the really strong ones from the previous book, all now massively cost reduced! It'll be interesting to see how things actually play out, but from initial viewings it did look as if, for GSC at least, this edition is going to give them a massive power boost!
Garacesh Posted June 16, 2023 Posted June 16, 2023 (edited) Annoyingly, two out of my three* armies are looking pretty dumpstered. Drukhari have lost so much of their fluff, and it feels like a lot of units have been nerfed. Sisters look like they've got zero anti-tank in an edition that's looking to be very vehicle-heavy and the strongest thing we have is S12 maces on the Nundams. Nids rules look fantastic though. * Well, technically I own Sisters models, but they're only semi primed. In my defence their bases are complete.. but they're not glued to them... Edit: Okay, after spending a bit more time ruminating over the new Drukhari rules, it seems like we've had a massive shift from melee to shooting. Incubi are no longer the MEQ blenders they used to be, which is a massive shame, because their entire thing was glass cannon, now they're just glass. Some of the guns got good, dark lances got very good. Our 'core' melee unit, Wyches, though, are basically useless without Lelith Hesperax, and are basically just meatshields for her even if you do take her. Transports were always a core element for us, but they're going to be used even more now. Lack of assault ramp hurts us a bit, but at least we get full firing deck. Also Urien Rakarth is just.. just useless now. A single one-shot ranged weapon? Torrent is nice but 3D6 S3 AP-1 D1 is a pretty meh statline. If they gave it Precision, it might've been worth it. Bedders Posted June 16, 2023 Posted June 16, 2023 My Grey Knights look interesting - A lot of teleportation/deep strike rules, and a mix of melee and ranged. The Imperial Guard have a good variety of tanks and infantry but I may have to choose one to focus on if there are strategies that favour one or the other. My Inquisition units are rolled into Imperial Agents and can be thrown into either army which is fantastic!
Garacesh Posted June 17, 2023 Posted June 17, 2023 (edited) Saw a lot of chatter about using Grey Knights' teleportation/deep strike to be able to dodge Battle Shock tests. Now GW have retconned it in the Rules Commentary If a repositioned unit is Below Half-strength and it was not on the battlefield during your Command phase, it must take a Battle-shock test as if it were your Command phase after it has been set back up. AlistairB1983 Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 Points costs are live Yeah .... Not quite sure how I feel about this to be honest. On the one hand I do like the simplicity of having all the points for wargear etc. included in the points cost of the unit. However on the other hand I dislike the 'leftover' points I'm finding when I'm writing all my lists! One '1000 point' list comes in at 915, because all the other units I have are at least 90 points. Now I don't expect (m)any of my usual opponents to care about me going 5 points over, but I still don't like doing it, and it just feels wrong to call a list 'done' pretty much as soon as it tops out over 900 points. But have first game this evening so I guess I'll see what my friend's list looks like at that point too - see how well Tau can squeeze out those last few points.
Garacesh Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 Yeah I think that's going to be a thorn in everybody's side. My provisional 'Nids 1,000 is actually 995, so doesn't really count in this scenario, but in previous lists I've been like "Well, whack an extra 2 termagants in, easily points fill" which you can't do any more. I don't think wargear will stay free. I'm seeing a lot of people say this isn't the first time they've tried this, and it didn't stay free last time they tried

Like the choice between a lascannon and a plasma cannon is one I'd be okay with being 'free' (ie no points difference) as they do similar but different jobs. But thinks like vehicles being able to add all their sponson/extra weapons for free is where is feels really awkward. I mean I could take this basic dreadnought, or I could take one that's armed to the eyeball, for the same price. Why would you ever not? I too think somehow they'll reintroduce wargear costs, I'm just not sure how they'll do it. I initially thought in the codex when it gets released, but that would kinda undermine the 'free to play' notion - unless they're going to eventually make the 'f2p' version of 40k a very much introductionary only system (which wouldn't surprise me!). - - - Updated - - - Yeah I think that's going to be a thorn in everybody's side. Garacesh Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 I think they're committed to the points/rules being always free. So they might reintroduce wargear costs in the codices but the freebies online would still get updated. Codices are just additional art, lore, paint schemes, etc. That being said, given the road map for codices being two years, I doubt they'll reintroduce it that way. Like you say, a dreadnought armed to the teeth is free.. So if I'm playing an army that has wargear costs, and you're not? Well flip the table on that game, I'm never going to win. So when/if they do, it'll be all or nothing I expect.
ICTDirect_Dave Posted June 20, 2023 Posted June 20, 2023 It does seem rather nuts! I know they're trying to simplify everything to avoid all the fiddly bits, but there's a huge amount of difference between loadouts. There should be a cost to that otherwise people will always go for whatever the current meta suggests is best rather than squeezing points here and there to build a more balanced force.
AlistairB1983 Posted June 20, 2023 Posted June 20, 2023 Well, having played my first game of it last night, I must admit I am very much taken with this edition as opposed to previous ones. The lack of bookkeeping in terms of victory points is an absolutely massive improvement, it really is hard to overstate how much this has increased my enjoyment of it. Admittedly this was the basic scenario in the rule book, so the devil (as with everything GW) will be in the detail of the missions etc. but fingers crossed they keep the 'simplicity' which they seem to have been aiming for everywhere else into the missions/objectives. I really liked some of the small/minor things they've included - a Tau stratagem that allows them to emergency re-embark on a Devilfish if they're assaulted! The 'free' wargear, however, does feel like it's definitely an issue. My Redemptor took a free Icarus rocket pod, which has anti-fly 2. Unfortunately (for him), my opponent plays Tau, so over the course of the game it pumped out about 20 or so mortal wounds onto Crisis Teams/Hammerheads/Devilfish. Now granted this was one unit in one circumstance, but I can't help but feel this is definitely going to be something that imbalances between armies - my GSC getting free upgrades are never going to be as effective/efficient as my marines getting them. And I dread to think how useful/powerful this could be for IG players! Honestly I think it would be a shame if this continued for the entirety of this edition as I think it will mean you just don't see some versions/weapons, as the meta will quickly decide what's 'best' and that will just be spammed with little/no thought involved. Also, on a minor side, slightly (understatement!) annoyed by GW changing the weapon allocations for some units to match what comes in the box. Sure, going forward that's really helpful. Less so when you've an entire Ad Mech army that's now virtually useless as they're all doubled up on special/heavy weapons!
Garacesh Posted June 20, 2023 Posted June 20, 2023 I haven't played any 10th edition games yet. I'm hoping to get a game or two in soon, but I need to finish my 500pts list since my only local opponents are very new to 40K. So far I'm at 440 for Tyranids and struggling to fill it out. Do I take out the Haruspex, drop my list back to 315, and build up from there? Probably should for 500pts, but I like big angy monsters, and carnifexes are the same cost. The new screamer is vastly over-costed though. 180 is not worth it.
Garacesh Posted June 24, 2023 Posted June 24, 2023 Zoanthropes ready for 10th edition! Wanted to get them done before Leviathan arrived as they're in both my 500 and 1,000 list. And probably every list, because they're awesome. 2
