I've just noticed that in the background of the Tygon pics is an unopened, still sealed pot of Citadel Goblin Green paint from the 1990's 😄

Clearly I had visions of painting lots more bases in the 1990's than I actually got around to.

Speaking of Warhammer, since I'm reminded this thread exists, I did recently pick up and paint a Warboss as a palate cleanser (and also be has of the aforementioned patience-losing with the Gargoyles...)

My Start Collecting! Tyranids box is now done! I'm not sure yet whether I've now started or have actually Finished Collecting! Tyranids. We'll see.

This is the Trygon now finished, to join the Broodlord and Genestealers from earlier posts. Not a great photograph, since a dark, glossy space monster is a bit too challenging for my phone camera. It looks better IRL (particularly the colour-shift carapace), but @Garacesh's Norn would put it to shame, I'm sure.

I painted a Space Wolf for the first time in forever.  It's the terminator captain from the leviathan box kitbashed to be extra wolfy.  Quite happywith him tbh.

Not so much 40k related, sadly have become somewhat disinterested in that recently as I can't keep up with GW's constant revisions/new 'seasons', so instead have chosen to spend what little free time/money I have after accounting for my little one on a new Bolt Action army instead.

So have spent most of half-term (when he was thankfully at Nursery!) on building a desert South African force.

Bolt Action is a Warlord Games release isn't it?  They were founded by the late, great former white dwarf editor, Paul Sawyer.

I'm with you on 40K.  Not a fan of the rules as they are now.  Brind back 3rd/4th Edition.

Whilst I've never played it, I quite like the look of Grimdark Future, an alternative, minimalist ruleset that has clearly been written with 40k miniatures in mind. The factions and units are obvious analogues of 40k (Alien Hives, High Elf Fleets, Machine Cult, etc.).

Yes, and the rules are written by former GW'ers - Alessio Cavatore & Rick Priestly.

For 40K I don't mind the actual rules themselves, in fact I quite like the way 10th plays. My issue is with them issuing constant errata's/points changes, dropping a new 'mission' deck etc. Given I only get to play 40K about twice a year, my desire to stay 'up to date' on something I play so infrequently is waning rapidly.

Posted

I can appreciate that. I actually like how 10th edition plays too, the mission deck is a good idea (especially as a nids player where tabling your opponent isn't always viable) and most of the errata is for the positive. The comeback deck (I forget its official name) is good too.

The extra Incursion/1000 pt rules are nice too as I prefer lower points games for their speed. I've always been in the mind that rules should be free though, so buying mission decks is a bit of a pain.

Points errata I don't mind though. It's a faff, sure, but it does attempt to keep the game balanced. The changes to stratagems, what can and can't be reduced, etc, is what bug me, because I can never remember them 😅

I've been getting into Warhammer via Tabletop Simulator recently. Takes maybe 20 mins to set up your army but it's a one-time thing and once you've done you have it ready to drop whenever, so it's just jump in and go.

It's been tricky finding painting time recently but I'm delighted with this little regiment of Jade Warriors from the grand Cathay boxset.

Bloody lovely new Warhammer fantasy minis!

Lovely work!

If I wasn't so poor thanks to the little man's arrival last year, I definitely would have splurged on Cathay. Although, quite glad in secret, given the size of the Sky Lantern - that would have been a massive pain in the **** to try and transport 3 of them!

As it is, I've bought a couple of extra bits from Mantic's Kings of War Halfling range, who were previously my Empire army, but can now happily pose as both - which helps given the new Army of Infamy!

Yeah the sky Lantern is bonkers!

I got the batallion box for my birthday and then picked up the lantern from travelling man for a decent discount on the GW rrp so it's not cost too much so far.

They're beautiful minis though!

A friend of mine is currently painting a full KoW halfling army.  They've got some glorious figures too!

Agreed, although sadly somewhat disappointed at them not being actual halflings, given their size - they're essentially just Empire with hairy feet!

Now someone like TTCombat, those are PROPER halflings! (I love my miniature vampires!). And, much as I'd love to have an actual halfling Empire army, I couldn't justify re-buying it all over again as compared to buying a couple of extra models. Sadly.

We restarted our club today - new members. Rather amusing that once the old members (Year 11) saw the new members they came out of the woodwork. We also now have an Instagram - @gwyr40k if anyone wants to take a peek and see what we will get up to.

Great to see little ones getting involved. Make 'em play Warhammer and they'll never have money spare for any other vices!

I still need to find myself somewhere to play/some irl opponents.. Although that also means I need to paint more.

All of my games this year have been over Tabletop Simulator 😅

Okay - I am still learning but - Tabletop Simulator?

Indeed.. Tabletop Simulator: See Tabletop Simulator on Steam

There are community mods that allow for modelling and playing 40k online. Probably Sigmar too but I don't play that so haven't looked into it.

Combined with an army list builder with Yellowscribe support (e.g. New Recruit) you have everything you need to built and play whatever faction you like.

I started using it to test lists so I didn't buy models I don't need, but it is also a convenient way to get a game in, especially when you can save the current state and come back to it later, a definite boon for adult life.

I remember playing some games on Tabletop Simulator during lockdown. It worked surprisingly well, and allowed us to play larger scale games, with armies that we'd always wanted to try out but had never collected.

I think we added an extra rule that whoever loses gets to flip the table at the end.

Afternoon everyone - thought I'd show our new club logo (clearly chatgpt created) - but the kids love it. I also have a question....

.... As their teacher I am clueless with this stuff. My aim is to give them a safe space. But to be ultra-cool I need to get involved. Where do I start? What to I read? I want to create my own Team (Edmondson!) - that I can use against the pupils. Happy to take advice - books, websites.....

I have joined the South Wales Warhammer 40K Facebook group and they have been great - with some even donating stuff.

Anyway - here is our logo

Well, first what gamemode are you playing? Kill Team, Combat Patrol, King of the Colosseum (not an official gamemode, but still fun), or standard 40K?

Secondly, pick a faction to play:

  • Space Marines are the 'vanilla' faction but are decent (they're commonly thought of as 'the good guys', but nobody is 'good' in 40k, it's all various flavours of space-racist and good old wartime xenophobia). There's different flavours depending on what you like, from templar looking dudes, to sneaky guys, to teleporting demon-hunters.
  • Adepta Sororitas (Sisters of battle) are nuns with guns. They love bolters and flamers
  • Adeptus Custodes are specialists in every way. The cheapest army to collect as every model is like 300 points.
  • Astra Militarum (Imperial Guard) are your normal humans, but they can do a lot.
  • Chaos space marines (and their variants) are space marines who went 'evil' and turned away from humanity. Some worship war, some pestilence, some excess, and some magic/foresight/that sort of thing, and some worship any that gives them power.
  • Chaoes Daemons are... well, demons. From the warp. Chaosy.
  • Orks are angy space mushrooms that love a good fight, up close and personal style.
  • T'au are 'for the greater good' (but still pretty space-racist) and enjoy lots of big long-range guns
  • Aeldari are specialists who devote themselves to a particular type of warfare as a form of meditiation
  • Drukhari are the 'evil aeldari', are fast-paced glass cannons, frail but dangerous when played right
  • AdMech are.. weird. I don't even know how to describe them.
  • Tyranids are hungy space bugs. Lil bugs, big bugs, shooty bugs, stompy bugs, they have 'em all.
  • Genestealer Cults are Tyranid pre-invasion forces that hide on a planet, multiple, then spring free all at once
  • Leagues of Votann are... space miners? I think? Relatively new, I don't know that much about them
  • Necrons are the Terminator. Literally. "I'll be back" is one of their rules.

There's probably far better descriptions out there.

Once you know what faction you want to play, you need an army list. If you haven't purchased a codex, Wahapedia and New Recruit are good resources to have in your back pocket. You need to decide how many points a game is. There are rules tweaks for 1000 point games, but typically games are played to 2000 points. But 2000 points costs more money, obvs.

Finally, once you have an army list, buy (and preferably paint) your models, get 'em on the table, and see how you go.

Edit: Totally happy to sit with you in a Discord call and go through it a bit more in-depth, if you'd like.

Absolutwly love this post - thanks @Garacesh - really appreciated. Upon reading this and based on my own love of sci-fi, is there a good Space Marine faction? I've also just found a core-rules book pdf so will read this tonight.

I'm sure there used to be a magazine as well on the shelves of WH Smith - White Dwarf? Is this still available to buy in Tesco (the only place to get mags thse days). It isn't on Readly.

Depends on your given definition of 'good'

'Good' as in 'Good to play'? Probably, though I'm not a Marines player. Most of the marine factions are pretty playable right now, except maybe Black Templar IIRC. Your basic Ultramarines consistently do alright, Oath of Moment is a solid army ability (each army gets their own signature abilities), they're relatively easy to learn to play, and they have units for basically everything you want to do. Do I like em? No. Would I play them? Nuh-uh. But that's just personal preference, and I can't deny they aren't the safe pick to learn the game with.

'Good' as in 'the good guy'? No. Nobody is good in 40k. It's a universe where the entire galaxy has been ravaged by war for over 10,000 years. Good guys died out long ago.

That being said, the first rule of 40k is the rule of cool. Actual rules, as in game-rules, change per edition, per balance patch, etc. What you think looks cool doesn't. So part of your army decision should be 'Who do I think looks badass?'. Is that the spiky space bugs that devour entire planets? The muscular and mental build-rocket-cars-from-scrap orks? The plucky humans who fight against demons and machines of war with nothing more than a lasrifle and a dream? The big power armour guys? The power armour guys but with spikes? etc.

Space Marines are a good place to start, because the model count is reasonably low and they're designed to be user-friendly to paint, so represent the least work to bring to the table. It's also a faction with a massive range of options from a design point of view, so you're likely to land upon something that appeals to you on a 'cool' level. My personal favourite amongst Space Marines is the Dark Angels, who are enigmatic warrior monks in hooded cloaks. On bikes.

Sub-factions generally have a signature colour scheme, so starting out I'd recommend steering clear of anything that's predominantly white, cream or yellow. Those colours are a pig to paint nicely. In any case, several thin coats are better than one thick one!

Amusingly enough, I've just had a meeting with my colleague who is running the club as well and he took me through Factions and Chapters for me to choose my own personal team. Well - because I am a Star Wars fan and love Stormtroopers - I have decided to go with Space Marines: White Scars. Now I have no idea if they are any good, but I like the look of what they could be. Maybe someone here will tell me not to bother :)

Myself and my colleague are off to the Warhammer shop in Swansea  after school for a look and a chat with whoever is there. I think it's called 'The Gamers Emporium'.

My heart sank earlier though when I saw the cost of this stuff.
