Arrgh! So they are! And I've Just printed a load of 20x20mm bases for the rats!

I imagine there'll be loads of custom movement trays to 'upscale' bases to the new required size as a lot of people will be in a similar position!

I know at least a couple of guys from my club have some already as they use them for an alternate game (Oathmark) where they're required to be on 25mm. They don't look too bad actually - I think especially if you ran the same basing material/design between the models it would look fine (but still not as good as properly ranked up!).

I wouldn't be surprised if even GW did something official, which will obviously be about 4 times as expensive as it should be/any alternatives.

Yeah I've been looking into options and I reckon custom 3d printed trays are the way to go.

Just drop the 20mm base into the spaces. Will allow you to add more detail to the base and make regiments look super smart all together.

Will also be handy for Kings of War games too.

Yeah the base size change can be a bit annoying, I've thankfully managed to always avoid it up until now as Incubi got the base-boost during my hiatus.

Not sure why they're faffing about with base sizes since template weapons aren't a thing any more, surely they could just tweak movement/range characteristics instead, but given the level of overhaul I guess I can let it slide

(though the cynic in me does agree they'll probably come out with their own base upscalers at £Silly-per-10)

I seem to remember seeing a [long] YouTube video a few years ago of someone burning their entire High Elves army in 'protest' at GW scrapping Fantasy and starting up with AoS. Something like 25k pts.

In this case its GW admitting that was probably always too restrictive for rank and file units if you wanted anything dynamic.

Things were fine when you would buy 10 identical high elf spears. But this Skaven unit i've printed is a swine to fit into ranks. I've found one way of fitting them all in an 8 x 3 formation!

Would not have been a problem on 25mm bases.

Y'know, that's a valid point, although I'm not sure how much more flexibility you get with +3mm.

I think that's what happened to the Incubi, anyway.. 25 to 28mm, and I'm sure I've read somewhere that the new 'gants are 28mm too, so I'm assuming that's going to be the standard going forward.

For the termagants, might that be more of a 40k thing to tune how many models can be ultimately get into base-to-base contact (if that's still a thing in 40k), or at least how densely models can be placed into a particular area for fighting or securing objectives? Smaller bases confers an advantage for a swarm-style unit like termagants, so increasing their base size might be just as much about dialling down that power.

That only really makes sense if the earlier models are going to have a different datacard, like with tactical vs primaris marines.

You know, that's a fair assessment. With units now having an Objective Control score, bigger bases means fewer units in range.

Base contact is a thing in melee still, anything in contact or within half an inch of something in contact, iirc. Unless it's Hormagaunts, who are in combat within 3 inches, because swarm shenanigans.

I know that the genestealers I painted recently have bases which are a bit too small. They topple easily and just look a bit off by today's standards. I would fully expect new genestealer models (if they appear) to have wider bases, in line with similar 'elite' role units from other ranges.

I've seen a lot of folk expecting a genestealer resculpt.

I haven't used them for years, but I remember back in 5th they were great melee units (y'know, back when rending claws actually had the rend rule...), but they did have a tendency to hold hands whenever you wanted to move them..

There have been issues with units ranking up for almost as long as I've been playing it (late 90s)!

Trying to rank up Skaven was always a nightmare because of their stupid ratty tails! You ended up having to base them diagonally to get them to rank up.

Then you have Orcs - particularly Savage Orcs - who all wanted to raise their weapons up and shout. Which looked great, until they started having elbow fights with their neighbours.

Dark Elf Corsairs like to try and shoot the guy in front of them in the back. Very Dark Elfish, but not much fun to try and rank up!

I have ... concerns my 3D printed ones are going to have a similar issue with some of my Black Guards, as they have quite large Halberds with some dynamic, forward facing, poses which could be .... interesting to try and rank up. (Although similarly I'm going 7x3 (20 + 1 Sorceress), so hopefully that'll limit the issues!)

I think the the psychic phase being dropped was rumoured quite early on, so I'm glad to see it go. It was a dead part of the game when playing as AdMech, for instance, since there are no psychic units at all. I guess the command phase is there to accomodate any miscellaneous business such as warpy fireballs drifting about the table, etc.

Also they put out the new Leviathan Starter Set contents details:

I might have been streaming this at work on my 2nd screen.. Kid comes in right as they unveiled the Neurotyrant and sort of pauses for a moment before, I presume, ultimately decided that they just weren't going to ask.

Definitely buying the box if I can beat out the scalpers. Probably shift the Marines on eBay, maybe I'll just paint them anyway, I dunno. We'll see.

Aside from the hivelord (disappointing wings) and the weird drednought it looks a really nice box! That Carnifex is glorious though!

Truth be told I'm not 100% sold on the wings being in the lower sockets, nor the pose of the Winged Tyranid Prime.. But let's be real, if I were to buy everything else individually I'd still probably pay over the £150 it's rumoured to be sold for.

I'm uhming and ahing about whether I just flip the Marines on eBay since I don't actually care for Marine or Marine-adjacent armies much* or try to actually paint them. I've been experimenting with layering and glazing recently (instead of just drybrushing everything) and I'm starting to get the hang of it, I think. So I might use them to practice edge highlighting and smooth transitions.

* Okay, except maybe Sisters of Battle. I'm kind of tempted by them, but I already have enough Tyranids and Drukhari that need painting.. :getmecoat:

You can never have too many armies on the go.

I have a friend who in the last month alone has started collecting Grey Knights, Orks and has created two new custom primaris chapters. This is in addition to his current Kings of War addiction!

I've no idea where he gets the money or the time to build everything.

You really shouldn't be tempting me like this

I think I'm going to strip all my Drukhari and repaint them. Well, I say 'repaint' only some are properly painted, then I have a unit of Kabalites I painted with a scheme I decided not to use, and then a bunch of other models (mostly wych cult ones) are random test schemes.

I've been testing different methods and the best cost-to-performance ratio seems to be just straight methylated sprit.

Leave the model to soak for about 5 minutes, scrub with an old toothbrush, repeat as required. Leave to soak in regular water overnight and it stops any residue buildup. Job done.

It even eats through varnish!

Do you know if this will remove an old Citadel paint called Smelly Primer, which was used to prime metal minis? Tyring to redo some of my 90's era models, I could get the colour off with isopropyl alcohol but the primer wouldn't budge. I had globbed it on to plastic minis as well as metal ones, and lost a fair amount of detail.
