Any Warhammer 40k'ers on here?

I collected a load of my old 40k stuff from storage a couple of weeks ago. None of it particularly well painted, but lots of lovely stuff.

First up for a repaint was the original lead casting of Bjorn the Fell-Handed. He was second hand when I bought him some 20+ year ago and had been painted more than once before I got him.

Stripping back the layers with copious amounts of nail polish remover it looks like he was previously painted as both an Ultramarine and an Imperial Fist... The Heresy!

 

I bought him a Plasma Cannon arm as all my other mechs have assault cannon and got to work.

 

 

I'm quite happy with the end result

I love the heft of those old 'lead' models. The dreadnought was a model I wanted sooo bad back in the 90's but I never had one. It's nice to repaint (or just paint!) old models. It's satisfying to feel like you're doing them justice in a way, and it also makes you appreciate just how good the detail on more recents sculpts is.

That looks great. I have to say though I hate the old metal models. I have an old WHFB metal hydra that I have tried to paint a few times over the (OMG) 20!! ish years I have had it.

 

Every time I have given up before finishing because the heads keep coming off. I have tried pinning it, a bunch of different glues, Greenstuff and all sorts but its so fragile I just give up.

They can be a pain for sure. I've used two part epoxy to fasten him to the base. The plasma arm is plastic and not fixed, so i can remove for transport. The Claw arm is pinned with a threaded pin and glued with copious amounts of expoy. It's well set now and shouldn't move again. Ever!

 

I get what you mean about the larger metal models. I had the High Elf Lord (Imrik?) on a big-ass blue dragon and that was forever falling apart!

Some of the smaller old metal models are glorious though. These Blood Claws are all-metal bodies with plastic arms and I loved painting them.

I'm in the middle of doing the old 2003 white metal rune priest too. He's a relatively simple build and superglue holds him well enough. I'll post him when he's done

In a change from my planned painting schedule, here's a Thunderwolf.

 

My rather lovely children got me a box of Thunderwolf Cavalry for fathers' day.

 

 

Quite happy with the first one. Tried a few new techniques and he's turned out rather well I feel.

That looks great. Really loving the colour on them, nice contrast but really smooth transition between them.

I'm proud with how the transition worked. I wanted something that would stand out from all the grey/bone coloured pelts the rest of my marines wear and I think these do the job!

 

For reference:

 

The whole thing was sprayed black, then the whole wolf given an initial coat of Ushabti Bone, thinned with a little medium.

The reddish brown is Skrag Brown which I then mixed with a little Vallejo Heavy Siena for the grading before doing the top with pure Heavy Siena.

The bone and pure Skrag bits were washed with Seraphim Sepia, the darker bits washed with Agrax Earthshade to give more contrast.

To tie the whole thing together a very light drybrush of Ushabti Bone followed by Screaming Skull was applied across the whole model.

 

I'm used to starting dark and then working towards brighter colours. Doing the opposite was an interesting exercise.

That is actually something I don't think I have ever tried. Thinking about it, it would would seem like starting with your lightest colours and working back to your darkest would make a lot more sense. Its much easier to cover a light colour with a dark one. Just the thought of it though kind of feels like trying to say the alphabet backwards.

It was very counter-intuitive and I don't think I'd do it for space marines, but it certainly made blending the colours easier on a big furry wolf!

Slightly heavier drybrush on this chap. I want them all to look similar, but will age them differently with the final highlights.

Those wolves look really good. Starting light was how I used to do it back in the 90's, when my metal models had a coat of white "Smelly Primer" before any regular paint went on. My old models look pretty bad through, as there are speckly white bits showing through in the recesses where I haven't fully covered with colour. Also I had far less patience with it than I do now. Since falling back into the hobby in recent years, everything I've painted has started with a black spray coat, since they're all quite dark colour schemes anyway. No yellow cloaks or anything!

I may go back and do a little more with the riders but for now at least I'm pretty chuffed with them

I don't know how much they're charging for it, but looking at the models I reckon the Necron Lord from the Indomitus box is a much nicer model!

@sonofsanta shared a tweet of some necrons that were painted up the the same colour scheme (more or less) as Skeletor from the original He-Man series.

For the first time in a while (possibly because I had the same warden figure going spare) I was inspired to do the same.

 

Here's the result of a couple of hours feverish painting last night.

My son got some Games Workshop Lord of the Rings figures for christmas and I realised I've had a few sat unbuilt for nigh on fifteen years.

Tell me about it! I'm so glad GW have gone more towards 'hero' scale (is that 28mm? I always forget the exact measurements...) rather than the 25mm they used to use.

 

I should really paint some more. I have a Roses tub full of primed-grey models that I haven't touched in months....

Haven't painted much in recent months, but I do have a lot of new models that need assembling. I'm hoping to get busy on them soon and get the builds done in time to catch the 2 or 3 days in the year that have the Goldilocks weather conditions for spray-painting (no breeze, no rain, not hot, not cold, not a work day, not a day taken up with domestic chores).

After sorting out my hobby room for the incoming bambino, I think if you only have a Roses tub you might be doing it wrong

40K at least is 28/32mm depending on your faction. And Primaris models are hovering around 40mm in a lot of cases!

 

I've got a huuuge swathe of minis to build and paint. My pile of shame is several cubic feet right now and is about to get bigger. I just spent some christmas cash on an Impulsor for my Space Wolves and the Start Collecting: Craftworlds boxset in anticipation of a year of shiny new Eldar releases!
