After sorting out my hobby room for the incoming bambino, I think if you only have a Roses tub you might be doing it wrong :o

Not including transport, 'cause they won't fit, obviously.. lol

I probably have about 1500pts overall, including transports, and about 1200 of that is assembled and primed but needs painting.

After 25 years in the hobby I've finally decided to scratch that big Eldar-shaped itch and start a new army this year.

Got me the start collecting box at Christmas and finally got to some painting last week.

Here's the Farseer. For my first space elf, I'm pretty chuffed.

I like it. I've a friend who collects Eldar and his hobby skills are much better than mine. I too have a bit of an Eldar-shaped itch, I must confess. It's been nice to see them add some new models to the range recently.

Wow. I'm not surprised you have an Eldar-shaped itch after seeing that. My friend's is also Biel-Tan, but he tells me that he regrets that choice, as the large, white curved surfaces are a pig to do nicely.

That looks great. The cloak came out really nicely and the orange is really popping as well. I find orange to be one of them difficult colours to do well. It's so easy when shading/highlighting for it to slip into red or yellow.

A lot of work went into the orange.

Initial airbrush coat of Vallejo Light Red. Zenithal highlight of Vallejo Orange Fire, again with the airbrush.

To really make the colour pop I shaded using citadel druchii violet. Orange tends to red, but pushing past red to purple really brings out the depth and stops the model looking to red.

Highlights were Citadel Troll Slayer Orange, then another layer of Troll Slayer mixed with Fire Dragon Bright. Next was Fire Dragon Bright on its own after which I mixed in Bestigor Flesh. Finally i touched up the brightest parts using pure Bestigor flesh. It worked a treat!

The cloak took several attempts and I'm still not entirely happy with it. Still it's a learning process I guess :)

I'm not there with the gems yet, but getting better.

Gem method is as follows:

Paint gem iron hands steel

Paint over with thinned lupercal green so that it appears dark with just a bit of metallic sparkle showing through.

Paint half the gem with thinned sons of horus green

Paint 2/3 of that half with a mix of sons of horus and sybarite green

Paint 2/3 of that 2/3 with pure sybarite green

Highlight the sybarite portion with a thin sliver of gauss blaster green

Add a single spot of white scar at the top on the dark portion to give the reflection effect.

To finish i painted a drop of windsor and newton satin varnish to the whole gem to give it more of a sheen.

Not going to lie, the whole process is much easier if you're using a wet pallete. Mixing and thinning can be done on the fly.

Gems are going to be the single most repeated process across this army so i'm going to have to nail doing them both quickly and well.

It's interesting that you mention varnish, as I wondered whether a gloss finish would work.

I found a gloss varnish worked well with my AdMech. For most of the models I've applied a gloss varnish over the whole thing, apart from the cloth areas, and then gone over everything with Lahmian medium to dial the gloss effect back where needed. As well as giving a bit more depth to the look, it also makes the paintwork much more resistant to scratches and sweaty fingers. I guess they might get a bit shiny over time if the medium gets worn off, but that can be re-added easily enough.

I'm sure gloss would work quite well for the gems. I'm not keen on it for the whole model as you lose the impact of some of your hard work when it's under lights and reflecting everything.

But for gems, or dialed back with medium, it should be good.

I went for satin because I had some in the house and didn't want them to be too reflective as they're tiny and it's easy to lose the detail.

And now for something slightly different.

I've been playing an online dungeons and dragons campaign with a bunch of friends for the last six months which has been great fun.

In anticipation of actually maybe getting to do so in the same room at some point, I went onto heroforge and designed my current character - Grumpy Dwarf Artificer.

You can buy the STL file for your creation for about $7 which i duly did and passed it to a mate who has a resin-based 3d printer.

He printed out my guy (Grom) at 32mm scale and popped him in the post. Here's the painted and finished product. I'm pretty chuffed with the quality of the print!

Duly noted!

I've vaguely-kinda-sorta kept an eye on 3D printers, the liquid resin ones do seem to be much better - and coming down in price, to boot. But I just wouldn't get enough use out of it at current.

Maybe if I got back in to 40K and were playing D&D in person..

Nice paint job. Honestly I have never been keen on heroforge mini's before, they always looked too cartoonish to me.

This one though looks pretty good.

I had to put a bit of time into it all. Certainly helps that I went for a massive beard. But you can change the facial expressions at quite a detailed level if dig down into the options.

Next campaign wer're going to play is going to be all miniature-based. DM is getting a camera system set up for the encounters. I've already designed my character for that one.

A nice creepy warlock dedicated to Cthulhu called Carter. Here's the heroforge preview.

Ironically, since we're discussing this in a 40k thread, my current character is a Wild Magic Barbarian Orc. Speaks in only two-to-three syllable sentences (e.g. he used Magic Awareness but couldn't say the word "Transmutation" so just yelled "CHANGE!" and pointed), and when he gets angry, weird stuff happens.

... then I just realised I'd essentially made a 40K Ork. So he's called Ed. Ed Krumpa. 'cuz 'e krumpz 'eads.

I do enjoy a path of wild magic barbarian. That wild surge table is great fun! Last time I played one, I rolled heroically well on my stats and actually has +2 intelligence.

I had the best vocabulary of any barbarian ever!

Orc looks good. Just remember, the file is scaled to 25mm bases, so you'll need to upscale it to 28/32mm before printing if you wanted it on a similar scale to 40K.

Oh, no, I rolled nothing lower than a 14, and 2 18's, on Ed's stats! His stat block is nuts. But I'm playing it that he just doesn't speak Common very well because he's nomadic.

I'm waiting for the day the party encounters a goblin, because he also speaks goblin, and I'll have him riff off big, long, fluent sentences to confuse everybody :p

Gonna play it that he spent years as a merc-for-hire protecting a caravan of goblins who forged/repaired weapons and armour.

Yeesh! You've nothing lower than a +2 in all stats? Those are some ferocious figures! You'd have been a beast in the early game!

Kudos for keeping the intelligence back for when you finally meet a gobbo!

One day I will be the other side of the screen and be able to use one of the many characters I have planned.... one day.....

The rule for our group is that everyone needs to come up with a campaign idea. As we end one campaign, we'll all vote on the next one.

Keeps things fresh.
