localzuk Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 Just bought some 40k stuff again, after not looking at it since uni. Anyone play?
halbaradkenafin Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 I used to play a few years ago and still have most of my stuff. People in my gaming group still play weekly, I think they've been doing some pretty cool things with the Heresy armies they've been building up. A small group of us are considering starting up Mordheim again though for a bit of change, probably just a small campaign over a few months.
CAM Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 Yes, part of Mid-Sussex Wargamers here. I play Dark Eldar as my main army which is 1500pts painted (and closer to 2000pts unpainted). Been playing since 1998 and got loads of old kit sitting around.
localzuk Posted March 3, 2015 Author Posted March 3, 2015 I'm not sure which army (or armies) I'm gonna settle on yet. I've bought the Dark Vengeance box to get started, so have something to start with, but eventually I'll probably look at something new. I used to play Orks and Chaos. I loved the Orks because they just look so cool.
thepridster Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 I've been playing for yonks im up Mansfield area and we have a good selection of gaming venues here I also have too many grey knights so if you ever need anything particularly vehicles let me know.
CAM Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 Keep everything, you never know what takes your fancy (I have too many armies). Most of all, pick whatever you think looks cool. Space Marines are quite varied and easy for beginners. You can make a small force that's easy to paint and learn the game with. The game is also quite balanced around a marine stat-line (S/T4 with 3+ Save). Chaos are similar but replace much of their flexibility with big nasty daemons, cultist hordes and outright crazy war machines and randomness. Tau are a gunline army, but attract a lot of hate because they are seen as breaking the game. Necrons are also shooty but I don't know much about them. Eldar are a cluster of fast specialist units that work together as specific counters against parts of an enemy force to achieve victory. Orks, Astra Militarum and Tyranids are horde armies. They field vast numbers of cheap units with Tyranids mostly melee with big creatures, AM are one giant gunline with lots of tanks and Orks can be built for either extremes or somewhere between. Dark Eldar...go for them if you like the look but they are considered a veteran army as they are very hard to use. They are glass cannons and if you don't play dirty by ganging up on lone units and hiding your own, you can lose to a single mistake. Each unit is expensive and fragile but virtually everything bypasses the enemy in some way (poison weapons as default, lance weapons to trash tanks, fast vehicles to rapidly redeploy and take objectives or change flanks).
ICTDirect_Dave Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 Used to be a massive player and founding member of Chesterfield Open Gaming Society. Took my Space Wolves to several Grand Tournaments from 99-04 with some success Not getting chance any more but I am tempted to buy the rulebook and put a few units together in the hope that I might be able to find time to nip to the preston store for a game.
Ghostgame Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 (edited) 1D4Chan is fairly good for humorous advice on Warhammer 40k armies and tactics. Edited March 3, 2015 by Ghostgame
thepridster Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 (edited) DAVE chesterfield is very close ! I actually work there. if you do ever decide to get back into it there's some very friendly venues in Mansfield woodhouse and Sutton and to follow on from what CAM was saying: Grey knights are one of your very elite armies in 40k and probably one of the cheapest to start with as I have lists that work in 1850 games with around 15 models no vehicles ^^ think of the grey knights as the jedi's of 40k there all psykers and very good ones and there damn well trained and are very very very good at killing daemons! Orks Because ORKS ORKS ORKS they are funky and can be played many different ways and if your decently quick with them they usually make a game fun for both people Necrons have been toned down a lot with there new codex and its still a very good codex and you can pretty much take the models you like and make a working army as all the units work pretty much Space marines have fantastic variety and can be built in many different ways to any play style Space wolves Like above except VIKINGS Blood angels Like above But vampires Chaos are more difficult as they do have units that just don't work in certain scenarios and you need to find a real synergy within your army list but when you do find it.... dear lord.... especially when used with daemons... Tau smell very strongly of mature cheddar and come in blocks shaped like giant battle suits basically tau are a gunline army but have access to some of the best monstrous creatures in the game especially if you like forgeworld added bonus if your into gundam Daemons tend to be very random and have very strong specific units under certqain situations certain gods give you advantages in certain scenarios and whats not to love about big Daemon princes and greater daemons the models are beautiful Eldar Damn quick and deadly lots of specialised units and THE best transport in the game that makes you cry every time you hear serpent shield also smell faintly of edam Dark eldar I don't really know these guys very well but have played a few armies with them as allies usually elder they have some nice units and they can hit damn hard ! I think the unit I was impressed with was grotesques but I could be wrong imperi... astra militarium I haven't played much of these but the themes tends to be massive units of infrantry that blind everyone with there blinky lights or lots and lots and even more tanks.... pretty cool army to play and can be very effective against the usually nails lists Inquisition usually a codex that's allied with others you get cool guys who have very cool artifacts for not many points who buff your amry in various ways brilliant special characters and are kind like judge dredd of the 40k universe Imperial Knights I haven't seen many people use these as a full army but I have seen these as allies they can be crippling against massed infranty or deathstars very big walkers with very big swords that cleave and stomp anything that survives the initial shelling hope this helps! On a side note, when on earth did the Imperial Guard get a fancy sounding name?
CAM Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 When GW lost a legal case surrounding trademarks against Chapterhouse Studios and they decided to throw a tantrum by giving everything copyright-safe names and withdrawing characters without models. @thepridster: Inquisition is great for sneaking a Land Raider into a paper-thin army like Scions. Also one downside of Space Wolves: "WOLFY WOLF WOLFY WOLF WOLF!"
thepridster Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 oh shame and when gw went mental about there IP and people producing models for there modeless character etc they also call space marines adeptus astartes now which is cool but for the same reason
CAM Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 I think Santa Logan ranks as one of the worst models ever produced by GW. A grav-sled pulled by dogs as part of an elite superhuman spec-ops force.
Garacesh Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 I got plenty of 'nids and plenty of Dark Eldar. Just picked up some of the DE Harlequins at the weekend, actually! Those're gonna be fun to paint >.>
Pottsey Posted March 3, 2015 Posted March 3, 2015 I've been playing for yonks im up Mansfield area and we have a good selection of gaming venues here I also have too many grey knights so if you ever need anything particularly vehicles let me know. That's my area and not managed to play in what feels like a year now. I used to have a group in notts but they don't do 40k anymore and I used to hate the drive.
thepridster Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 That's my area and not managed to play in what feels like a year now. I used to have a group in notts but they don't do 40k anymore and I used to hate the drive. do a quick google / facebook search for slayer gaming and sanctuary gaming if you ever want a re introduction to 40k let me know if its a Thursday night I can normally commit
Garacesh Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 I kind of fell out of actually doing the gaming because my FLGS is always full of younger kids and sometimes there's not a great deal of space.. I know there's a rather large GW in the centre of Manchester but dragging all my gear on the bus is a bit of a trek. Blaahhh. I need to find a more adult-based gaming community.
thepridster Posted March 4, 2015 Posted March 4, 2015 shame your not up Mansfield way two groups mainly 20-50's
Pottsey Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 do a quick google / facebook search for slayer gaming and sanctuary gaming if you ever want a re introduction to 40k let me know if its a Thursday night I can normally commit Thanks, I am tempted to do that. Would do me good to get back into both. Bet I forgot half the rules only played the new edition a handful of times.
sonofsanta Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 GW was the crack cocaine of my adolescence, as it was for so many middle-class-ish nerdy boys in the 90s. I had Chaos Space Marines for 40k (2nd edition, SO MANY CARDS FOR EVERYTHING) and Eldar (Alaitoc) for 3rd edition, and I even painted up the latter, some 1500 points worth - got 'em out on a shelf in my man cave, where they annoy my mother-in-law by collecting dust. I still have piles of other random WFB/40k crap clogging up my loft as well (Dark Elves, Dwarves, Orcs & Gobbos, misc. other rubbish). Every time I go in to clear it out, I come over all nostalgic and end up packing it all away again, with promises to myself that I'm going to do some painting again soon because I miss it, and I should arrange some battles with some friends again, and and and... ...and of course I never do. I don't have the spare time to paint anymore, and I don't have the spare cash to fund the habit - particularly not at contemporary prices, and I thought it was bad back in the 90s, sheesh - and if I'm entirely honest, I never really enjoyed the big battles anyway. I always much preferred the smaller gang games - Necromunda, Gorkamorka, Mordheim (upcoming PC game for that one looks good) - as they were shorter, faster, and had that thread of continuity and story in the experience & injuries. Ain't no ganger like a crippled specialist ganger you've had since his Juve days. Sure, he may move 2 inches a turn, fill his pants at the first sign of trouble and occasionally go mad, but you never see him miss, do you...
CAM Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 Haha! I had a Necromunda ganger who lost his mind in a zombie apocalypse scenario. And went to the effort of putting together a grenade launcher and autocannon heavy, both became the bane of my brother's gang. In more modern times...went to a new club yesterday and fought an Imperial Knight for the first time. Shredded it from 6 Hull Points to 2 in a round of shooting (yay for Darklight weapons!) it then stomped on almost a whole squad of Warriors and a Raider, went to stomp on the two leftover Warriors and promptly failed. Got it down to 1 Hull Point, nearly crippled the thing in melee. (Dark Eldar = )
Grey-gear Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 I haven't play warhammer 40K in years, used to have a whole chapter of Ultramarines. Used to go to the Sunday games and the GW shop in Derby but when I got my placement job stopped going
ICTDirect_Dave Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 oh shame and when gw went mental about there IP and people producing models for there modeless character etc they also call space marines adeptus astartes now which is cool but for the same reason Ahh they've always been the Adeptus Astartes in the literature, Space Marines was always just the shiny name that got the kids to play
