Any Warhammer 40k'ers on here?

My painting has definitely taken a back seat in recent months, but having children was always going to do that.

 

I know from experience that waiting for about 20 years after purchasing a model before painting it makes it look waaay better, so this parenthood thing is time well invested on the hobby front.

Also interesting to note the option retained regarding Fantasy. As that was always my first love, I would dearly love for that to be picked up, although I doubt it will be as I don't think they'll view it as having enough of a USP for the general public (something I disagree with, but sadly not a boss at Amazon!)

The contributors in that article do the annoying thing of conflating sci-fi with fantasy. I know that 40k has alot of medieval/fantasy design cues, and that some factions are recognisable as fantasy tropes reskinned for sci-fi, but still. Maybe I'm massively in the minority in being endlessly fascinated by GW's sci-fi setting (well, Imperium and Xenos, at any rate), but not ever finding any of the fantasy IP all that interesting. Do most people just dig the sci-fi and fantasy to broadly the same degree?

 

Like, I need them to make an Inquisitor Eisenhorn TV series already, but a series about a slightly unorthodox witchfinder in a long flappy coat employing dangerous methods and hiding a book of spells under the floorboards doesn't really grab me in the same way, even though it's basically the same thing.

Don't know about 4k fans, but my experience is that most people who read SF will also read fantasy and vice versa. Most do lean to one side, though.

 

My deepest involvement in GW's output has been primarily their fantasy output via reading the books Kim Newman wrote (initially as "Jack Yeovil") which are mainly OG Warhammer.

I think they're conflating the two as they're using 'fantasy' in its sense of fictional universes, rather than specifically Fantasy settings, as it's an article aimed at the 'general public' rather than has been published on a website aimed at those already interested/invested. I know this is a common thing I encounter with people lumping them together when they don't know any better (e.g. parents, former partners etc.). So to that end I guess, in their minds, the LotR comparisons are justified as they're using it as a benchmark as to whether or not they can produce 'good' entertainment based on a huge fictional setting which they themselves don't actually own/write for.

 

And whilst I love GW's Sci-Fi setting - although not the 'human' characters as I'm tired of them all having plot armour a mile thick - the Fantasy setting will always be way of more interest to me. And I believe many people are similar - not necessarily for having a Fantasy preference but for having a preference, despite liking both aspects immensely.

...and any number of shows/movies/books aren't SF as they don't have spaceships or rayguns. Particularly prevalent in literary circles.

Luckily I had kept the wife vaguely updated with this being my last 'big' purchase before the crotch goblin's due date in April, I just didn't necessarily specify exactly how much it was going to be.

 

Let's hope I get home first that day to hide some of it

Self-care is one of the most important aspects of being a good, effective parent. IME there's always a chapter on it at the end of any decent parenting book. If little plastic skeletons are what you need to self-regulate, support your partner effectively and avoid running out of patience/energy, then little plastic skeletons are what you need.

Additionally - collecting real human skeletons is generally frowned upon due to the number of questions raised by authorities.

 

 

 

They also probably take a lot longer to paint, too

Oh, very much so. I already have a number of projects I plan to use to help give me some down time, they just involve re-basing and/or stripping/re-painting existing models rather than buying new ones, as it's going to be the lack of money that is more the issue rather than the lack of time.

I bought the Bretonnia Box which I picked up for a tidy £124. Am hoping it lands on release day as I go to bett for the week on the 22nd and want to take the rulebook with me for a little light reading.

Plus I'll need to get a review done for the YT channel before I leave!

I've started painting again now that I'm settled in. Working on the Norn. It's not even in my 1,000 point list, and most of that is unpainted, but it's a cool centrepiece model, so I wanna get it done lol.

I've been diligently working away at my pile of shame over the last 6 months for this very reason Everything is, currently, fully painted and based. It's just the stupid new base sizes for The Old World mean I want need to rebase them.

My bases are actually super easy to do.. Everything is based.. But a lot of stuff isn't even primed, so I've got fully-decorates bases with sprue-grey models on top..

 

Because I'm that moron that pins every model, even tiny things like Termagants, Hormagaunts, Rippers, Neuroloids and Spore Mines.. 😅

I've been diligently working away at my pile of shame over the last 6 months for this very reason Everything is, currently, fully painted and based. It's just the stupid new base sizes for The Old World mean I want need to rebase them.

 

I'm starting a high elf army which will all be on correct bases for the old world.

I want to play my skaven in kings of war also so keeping those on standard bases and using an adapter tray to make up the difference.

My Dwarfs will be staying on their 20mm bases as they're all plastic glued down and I'm not in the mood to play around with that. Maybe one day in the future, if our group sticks with TOW, I'll put them on 25mm mdf bases and then just dot some sand/stones around the edge and match the paint scheme. But otherwise I'll be doing the same as you - painted up trays (we've already 3D printed several to test other companies - Mantic bases are slightly larger than GW ones!).

 

The main ones I'm going to move will be my Night Goblins as they're all superglued to their bases as when I made them over a decade ago I used plasticard to make it look like they were on flagstones. So I should be able to do the same thing on the 25mm squares, get them all painted and ready, and then spend a day or so popping them off the 20s and sticking them to the 25s (and other sizes for Giants, Manglers etc.)

I got the Bretonnia box on Old World preorder (yay hobby workshop for getting it me a day early and for just £124).

 

I'm painting these up with the knights as women (3d printed heads from highland minis scattered amongst the helmets) and I just finished my duchess.

I think she's looking ace (apart from the eyes, they're still rough as..)

Forgot about this thread.. Completed my Norn a little while ago. What a mammoth of a model to paint!

 

 

(I have since gone back and fixed the Assimilator head's teeth that I forgot to paint, whoops)
