Well worth the 100 mile round trip! If you read the plot you might think that the film isn't very interesting. How wrong you are.

Seraphim Falls Western with Liam Neeson pursuing Pierce Brosnan for initially undisclosed reasons. Starts well, but then begins to f=drag and goes a bit metaphysical at the end. I wouldn't recommend it, but if you see it pay attention to the writing on Angelica Huston's wagon (and check ouy the name of Wes Studi's character). The Next Three Days Remake of a French fim. Teacher Russell Crowe decides to bust his wife out of jail when she is found guilty of a murder she didn't commit. A bit of a slow burner, but pretty damn tense when it gets going. Worth a look.

It thought it was pretty poor and I'm surprised at all the positive reviews online about it. The plot was throwaway and the dialogue and characters uninteresting. Some of the action scenes were pretty well done but not enough to make up for everything else and the film was way too long despite there being virtually no plot worth speaking of! One to avoid IMO.

Dos_Box Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 Took the kids to see Pixels at the weekend. Yes, it's an unplug your brain movie, but the kids liked (loved) it and it had enough giggles and retro-gaming stuff in there to make it not as bad as some reviews had made out.
Sagima Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 My husband picked The Babadook to watch on Saturday. The acting is not terrible - the kid is actually quite good. Having glanced over some of the review of it I'm not convinced they didn't all fall asleep (wouldn't blame them) and miss the middle hour of it to think it that good. Really dull - stretched out for much longer than the story seemed to justify. About as scary as crossing the road.
pcstru Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 Chappie. Robocop meets Wall-E? It's watchable and generally quite well done as a piece of simple entertainment. It doesn't really have much depth in any of the themes it explores (emergence of an AI, policing, innocence and it's loss in growing up) but it doesn't take itself too seriously either. It's like it just throws a few questions at you - "what about this?" and just leaves them with you. Good for a rainy Sunday afternoon.
sonofsanta Posted August 18, 2015 Posted August 18, 2015 The November Man: Pierce Brosnan is an ex-CIA agent pulled out of retirement for one last job... yeah, it's another entry in the Old Man Does An Action Movie That's A Bit Like Bourne sub-genre so prevalent right now, but it's competently done, entertaining for the 1h40 it's on, and c'mon, it has Pierce Brosnan in it. He's great! Kept me and the wife happy, and worth a look next time you're scrolling through Netflix. Unfortunately, since listening to Adam & Joe's podcast, all I can think of every time Pierce Brosnan shouts in a movie is this clip from Taffin.

I fully concur. With each successive film they are getting further away from the original series. IMO it's time to drop the MI title and go for Ethan Hunt: Poor man's James Bond.

MI:Rogue Nation - Usual stuff as before with these films, the bad guy was annoyingly weak chinned and proceeded to annoy me by whispering his lines and lacking any major presence compared to previous films, nothing brilliant and a bit "meh" overall. Ant-Man - Suprisingly good, I didnt expect it to be good, but this was a very decent Marvel film I thought funny, serious in places and very enjoyable. Fantastic Four - Dreadful, worst marvel film by far to date, terrible acting and no presence from the cast I felt, the plot was laughable/non-existant and they literally dragged on and on with this going nowhere story and completely forgot about a bad guy until the last 20 minutes, no one mentioned him at all after teleporting away and back without him, then cut and paste him in to become Dr Doom is laughably bad. Jupiter Ascending - fun film, could have been better, why on earth they thought it would be a good idea to make Eddie Redmayne do a bad impression of the Spitting Image Margaret Thatcher when speaking was anyones guess, ruined the film for me.
sparkeh Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 So, with the Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp series being made by Netflix, with so many great people that I love in it I went and watched the original film it was based on. Sadly I was disappointed. Some great individual performances (Paul Rudd plays a great "cool" guy and Bradley Cooper is wonderful (and its not often I say that but he should do more comedy) but it was all a bit 'meh'. I just can't see why this has cult status and so many devotees. The series isn't any better either.

So, with the Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp series being made by Netflix, with so many great people that I love in it I went and watched the original film it was based on. I thought that about the cast, too. The series trailer didn't sell it (basically just listed the cast) - maybe you have to have gone to a US style summer camp to appreciate? Crossing it off my list!

I actually preferred the first two attempts to this reboot, plus I think its time for Hollywood to stop randomly rebooting series all the time now with films. Spiderman is another one that needs to come back in now as well, as Sony are rebooting that all the time just to keep the rights from what I understand with their deal. That being said I rather Andrew Garfield to Toby Maguire/Kirsten Dunst films there somewhat ironically.

Well, word on the street is that some deal has been struck and while Sony still retain Spiderman, he'll pop up in "Marvel" films as well (and presumably there is some reciprocal arrangement). I saw The Man From U.N.C.L.E. last night. I had low expectations - I liked the original and it seemed no-one on the production team did - and it was what I expected from the trailers: an enjoyable enough 60s-set spy caper but not "The Man From U.N.C.L.E.". What annoys me about this sort or re/boot/imagining/make is that it means that a more faithful one will then not get made for at least a few years. Very disappointing if you want to see a faithful adaptation of the show; otherwise fairly fun if a bit too long.

Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark: Remake of well-regarded 1973 TV Movie. I quite enjoyed it, though I seem to be in the minority. A young girl is sent to live with her distant father and is terrorized by evil frog-spider fairy ceatures.

My excuse is that I used to be forced to spend summers in Cornwall visiting the mother-in-law. Annie (2014) Quite sweet if this sort of thing interests you, but almost embarrassed to be a musical - the songs were curiously muted and under-produced.

Quite a sweet little movie. Chuck + drugs + violence + gore - charm = American Ultra Which was amusing, but not a "must see".

It would have been pretty forgettable but Tom Hardy's performance was so entertaining he pretty much carried the entire movie by himself. His portrayal of Ronnie Kray in particular was genius and made for some fantastic moments! I wouldn't suggest rushing to the cinema to see it but worth catching once it's out on DVD/Netflix/Tv.
