I have been given a laptop by one of the members of staff (it's old and battered) but want to use it for a Risevision screen. Classic case scenario she has forgotten her password and I can get in as she was the only local administrator. Does anyone have a technique of finding out her password? It's an XP machine? [Once this thread moves somewhere non-googlable.] The disc drive on the laptop is knackered and before you ask I have tried with a USB disk drive which also doesn't work as it doesn't show up in the BIOS to boot from! Any other magic way you may be able to help ? Otherwise the computer will have to be chucked away, if you think of anything please PM me and let me know! Domino Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 You really don't want an XP machine on your network anymore - if you can't reinstall as another OS, bin it.
Techykev Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 I suppose you have already tried hitting Ctrl Alt Delete several times at the log-in screen, (sometimes there is a system admin account with no password set)? It must be really old if it cannot boot from USB so an external DVD drive is no help :-(

pete Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 Either boot it from something like NT Offline Password Editor (Offline Windows Password & Registry Editor) or netboot it and grab the files she needs using WinPE Is there a reason you're not simply wiping the disk and re-installing a supported OS?

Won't no longer be connected on our network, it's a standalone machine that boots risevision on startup. It doesn't really matter if all of a sudden billions of viruses eat it away! - - - Updated - - - What about a regular USB drive with the contents of the XP disk? Tried this, not working, it seems to not support any bootable usb media.

Our school dosent have any spare licenses to put onto the system and there's no point in buying a new one for a computer as old as this :/

themightymrp Posted April 3, 2014 Posted April 3, 2014 ophcrack gets my vote. Used it plenty of times, including on Windows 7 machines. It has the cool feature of not just resetting the password, but showing what it is!

Then your only solution is to move the HDD into a different machine and fix the password problem. Or, just use a different computer...

Offline Windows Password & Registry Editor Just boot into the live environment, select the user name you want to change the password... and type a new password - reboot and login!
