What is your workstation spec?

Looking at maybe upgrading my workstation towards the end of the financial year. I have been in some schools were the network manager has a workstation costing easily £1000. (HP Xeon workstation) Just curious what specs people are using.

VMware workstation for VMs.

 

I reckon it'll be time for an upgrade once the next round of cpus come along, 3770 and 4770 dont really add enough over a 2600 to be worth it yet. Safe to say i certainly use it its full potential though.

An Acer Veriton - one of those dinky little ones that screws on to the VESA mount behind the monitor. Neat and tidy if somewhat underpowered, but it seems to manage whatever I'm doing just fine.

That's just elitisim.

 

I have a HP DC8000 not a clue on the specification but it's fairly bog standard, I could get by on a T5740 thin terminal apart from a few ocasional jobs.

Custom built Core i7 in an Asus board with 16GB DDR3, 2 RAIDed 120GB SSD's and a 4TB HDD.

 

Gave my Tech a budget to get us both new machines and that's what he came up with. Somewhat better than the Pentium dual core with 2GB RAM we had before.

This is what I have, with 8gb ram, 3.3ghz CPU and a nvidia 610 graphics (nice and cheap for multi monitor support)

Desktop i5 2500 with 8GB RAM 120GB cheapo SSD and BluRay burner, old nVidia card with dual monitors. It's basically a server that I can connect to where ever I am in the City.

 

Laptop is an i5 Alienware M14X R2 upgraded to 16GB RAM, a decent Samsung 256GB SSD. I use this constantly.

All the IT folk have an HP 8900 (i5, 4 GB RAM, 128 GB SSD) which is the same spec as in the IT suites. However, we shoved an NVidia NVS 285 in each of ours so we can get dual-screen (and I believe triple if desired) output, which does wonders for productivity! I may well upgrade the RAM in mine at some point (or perhaps I should just close some browser tabs....) Edited November 5, 2013 by FishCustard

Self build from 2008 - upgraded to a Phenom II x4 from an old Athlon x2. 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD + 500GB HDD, 780G graphics in a old Antec case. Love it, still plenty fast enough for what I need.

Mine is a Precision T3400, 3gig dualcore with 4gb ram and an additional hard disk for VMs, apart from that it's the same beast as the first batch of Dells we had here. Given thought to upgrading to a T3500 (second wave of stations here), which would give me a Xeon..or a T1650 which would give me 8 cores, 16gb ram and the SSD, but..to be fair, I haven't killed the T34 yet. Even pegged at max RAM and max CPU for hours at a time and mercilessly thrashed for 4 years, it's yet to miss a beat.

 

I'm happy with it - same spec, same build image as the current student one. I test them on myself first, heh.

my current machine is a intel next gen pc i3 3217u 4gb and 128 ssd.

my desktop that was got for me is currently running as the exchange server thats a i5 3330 8gb 1tb hdd and its also got a XFX-R7850 for ifinity and bl-ray rw drive

Self build about 2 months ago.

 

Reason I have such a powerful machine - I use it heavily for running virtual machines, programming and video encoding. I had an i7 920 (my technician now has it) before that and it just wasn't up to the jobs I was asking it to do!

We have self-build i5-2400 with 8GB RAM, 128GB Samsung 830 SSDs and extra hard drives - as others say, virtual machines and video editing. I'm also of the opinion that our computers need to be quick because people are often waiting on them/us to do something for them; the quicker the machine, the less time they're stood about eating our biscuits. I think the GPU is an nVidia 210, whatever was cheapest to let me hang two monitors off it.

 

We were on left-over scraps before that, random Core2 HPs and RMs.
