So Halfway through the summer... how are all those projects going?

Just a little thread to see how things are going for people.

 

3 weeks or so and the little loves will all be back.... so will the students

All projects have been successful, but it doesn't end there! Home projects now come into play, including painting and cleaning!

Might actually finish all ours this year which will be quite a feat as this did increase by about 30% last couple of weeks of half term and first week of the holidays as it always does I did say might.

Between our dept we estimated we were 30% overbooked with projects to complete by September. And so it has proved to be the case. The less important ones are already being deferred until HT and Christmas.

 

We have managed to get to the situation where about 15% of them will not have been started by September. It would have been around our original 30% estimation, but we were given consent by the Head and Bursar to totally drop support for teachers during the summer period. A harsh way of dealing with things but the only way in this case.

Station rebuilds: Started today

Printers: New DHCP reservations created [no other work completed]

Staff and student work: Migrated to the new virtual server.

 

We have a lot of work in front of us!

Our main objective is done, however , the objective of the MGMT for september is rather stalled. A mass desktop deployment ~200 workstations is going to be a minimum of 2-3 weeks late into the term through no fault of ours..

 

Fortunatly our own backup plan version 1 ( replace failed batteries in 153 (of 300) HP Laptops ) is almost done. After 2 years arguing with HP and them finaly not admiting fault but agreeing to send out the replacement batteries..

We re doing scarily OK. Windows 8 is now completely deployed everywhere. One or two small niggles are left but mostly just have some software and users to add.

Every PC in the school (bar a few admin machines that wont need to be) reimaged - have my techs in the process of going around checking them now and installing sims/whiteboard software

 

Storage for both my VMs and for data has been completely reconfigured, new raid arrays, new disk setups to improve performance and so on

 

Exchange 2010 to 2013 migration done

 

15 new additional managed APs installed

 

New internet connection tomorrow, the switch over from our ISA/proxies etc setup should take a few days to get sorted fully, then we're on to setting up the wireless to cater for BYOD with Aruba Clearpass.

 

 

 

Still lots to do, but it's getting there.

New domain now fully functional (Exchange 2003 > 2010 migration complete, SIMS shifted over), just got to image the remaining 75% of machines now on that front.

 

Ruckus WLAN basically working (one glitch to iron out), now to put up the rest of the APs.

 

Only two major tasks remaining are a couple of projector/AV installs.

 

Most of the really technical stuff is done, it's now just churning through doing the clean-up.

Follow me print installed today, need to deploy the papercut client will do the startup script tonight for it to install when people log in tomorrow. New antivirus client installed, will remove sophos tomorrow with a script (not many Sophos clients left though). New image 85% deployed. 1 suite to build. Nagios installed for monitoring but not 100% configured yet. So nearly there. Going on holiday on Tuesday for 2 weeks so hope to get done before then

Rebuild 4 Xendesktop Provisioning servers for XD5.6

Build 4 Xendesktop DDC servers for XD5.6

Build 2 Extra SQL and 2 SQL witness servers for Xendesktop SQL mirroring.

 

Begin Imaging 1000+ devices to support XD5.6...

 

It's been 7 Months testing Develpoing, Planning and when it's done it better blo....dy work , we have done pre-testing-testing, partial live testing but going whole hog in september is going to be a nerve jangler...

 

 

Then it's onto the next project to move our mail system form a single Xen Server to a new pool of two Hypervisors. And Citrix netscaler... And other stuff.... and finishig the desktops that are late..

Surprise student laptop configured for home and school use - thank you loopback GPO processesing - everyday is a school day woo

 

51 tickets still to back on our helpdesk, gulp

 

Plus the boss has sorted the exchange migration

 

Nm has sorted our byod and guest wireless (after 4 years) as swgfl finally came through with our transparent proxy woo

 

Ohhh and new phone system throughout

Pretty much done our re-imaging now. Although, now need to add .Net 4.5 to all our machines and we haven't got SCCM !! Doh! Impero will save the day with this one!

 

VLAN projector failed unfortunately (see my recent posts) - so I've rolled back for now and will investigate things again in the future.

 

Upgraded firmware on the Core and all 39 edge switches - things are moving a bit quicker than before I believe!

 

Tweaked our DHCP and organised things a bit better.

 

Updated all servers.

 

SIMS Discover Installed and deployed.

 

Office a lot more tidier than normal at present.

 

Work on our Student Profile (sort of a mini behavioural management system) is progressing nicely.

 

This summer has been odd; so much work was supposed to be done on the building but this has been pushed back so has ended up being not as busy as I expected. Chance to get all the little things done.

I've migrated all our old physical servers over to our new hyper-v setup (created around 20 vms), yanked the old tin out of the rack and recabled everything in there.

 

I've also created a complete new setup in our AD, to go with our migration to Windows 7, with all new GPOs crafted to get rid of our old ad-hoc grown stuff.

 

I've finalised our windows 7 image, and packaged up 40+ pieces of software in SCCM.

 

Still gotta image every machine in school, fix a broken fibre and fix a malfunctioning switch.

 

Also, want to implement a proper guest Wi-Fi setup, with captive portal, but will have to send my tech round to get switch ports to change them from in untagged to tagged vlan ports to handle it.

 

And I've gotta get SOLUS 3 working, if Capita would get the current issues sorted.

 

I'm about 4 days ahead of schedule too somehow.

 

If I get everything done, I'm also going to be setting up a secondary storage array with SMB3 clustering set up to provide failover for the hyper-v cluster. I'd do it now but I'm missing a 10Gb interconnect for it.

Ive only really had 2 projects this summer, replace all 30 classroom pcs that run the whiteboards and asset tag everything! 30 new pcs have been unboxed and imaged just awaiting installation in the rooms. Starting my asset tagging today 63 classrooms/offices to do! What fun! Especially where 100 of our monitors have a vesa bracket on the back which houses the computer and guess where the serial number for the monitors are, yep you guessed it under the vesa bracket!!

The projects we knew about are doing/done fine. The projects we are only being told about now are going to be more of a scramble. Bitter? me? never!

Last year we did our primary school from XP/Ranger to Win7/Vanilla. in 35 hours, 5-10pm Friday, 9am-11pm Saturday, 10am-1am Sunday/Monday. Damn nigh killed us, but sometimes needs must.

 

This included realising we'd entered the wrong windows key and every PC was trying to be a kms server, and that we had asked so many machines to build off the solely gigabit network that it actually ground to a halt and stuff staring failing to build!
