RabbieBurns Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 Just wondering what time scale if any people are putting on upgrading their servers to 2012. I might start with my DC's and then file servers.. what about KMS server. I belive I need to completely replan my hyperV set up if it is clustered? Exchange 2010 I will leave running on 2008R2 for a long time - cant see any time soon we will be upgrading to 2013 exchange. Just curious to what other folks plans are for the next 12+ months ?
synaesthesia Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 Our SIMS server will be going over very soon. We started easy - our CCTV server is 2012 but haven't done much with it. I'd also like to get both our main fileservers (and SCCM) over to 2012 but that'll take some testing when I have the time to do so. Main reason for that is decent dedupe.
localzuk Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 We've now got our storage server, 2 Hyper-V hosts, SIM, KMS, SCCM, and PKI servers on 2012. We're slowly but surely migrating over to 2012. Some things won't be moving as yet - such as our RDS farms. Others are due to be moved this summer - DHCP, RDS licensing, library system (if it is supported, else it'll be moving to 2008 R2 from 2003), IAS (which will become NPS), helpdesk server, etc... The limiting factor is 3rd party support. There are some packages that as yet don't support it.

6Foot2 Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 We are moving to 2012 on all of our servers during the summer break [Currently we have 2003, 2008 and storage server] At the same time we are deploying a virtualised server solution and updating/upgrading the cabling where required. The server room is to be completely reworked: We will organise the copper and fibre feeds [long overdue in my opinion] We have a lot of work on this summer...

apeman Posted April 21, 2013 Posted April 21, 2013 Been testing server 2012 since last September/October and we have upgraded/migrated all our infrastructure servers i.e. DC's, DNS, DHCP, NPS, PKI. Applications servers are being slowly migrated. If the server role supports core we are running it with minimal gui, this stops stupid admins browsing the internet on the servers. I dont see any reason to upgrade our Exchange 2010 servers to 2012 unless we get new hardware. All new servers will be 2012 as long as the 3rd party software supports it.

clockend25 Posted November 1, 2013 Posted November 1, 2013 We've been using 2012 for a year or so now, migrating and adding more bit by bit. Upgraded to R2 this week and just sorting DPM R2 now to complete the process.

Not got any plans for the rest yet. Are doing in place upgrades from 2008 R2 to 2012/R2 or migrating the data/apps to new servers?
fairm010 Posted November 5, 2013 Posted November 5, 2013 Upgraded 4 of our DC's from Server 2008 to Server 2012 over the half term. I like server 2012, feels a lot nicer to be poking about in, but I hate that they have put Metro on a server OS!

I took the opportunity at easter this year to virtualise onto 2 clustered r610s with bags'o'ram'n'CPUs + MD3220 . I migrated 4 servers, exchange, sql, fileserver(profiles + shared drives), "other" (DC, WSUS, etc) from physical to virtual and left one on 2k8R2 as a physical DC (with FSMO roles). 2k12 went smoothly; spent easter setting up SAN and host + guests, then migrated fileserver and one DC. Over summer another week moved exchange and SQL. Since I still have the old hardware I am going to start them up again on a segregated network (still outside tombstone life so they should start up ok) and see what would actually happen if I inplace upgrade to 2k12 from 2k8R2. I have never done an inplace upgrade so it would be interesting to see what would happen. For backup we use both windows backup within the guests (for data recovery) using virtual drives and "backup assist" on the host for disaster recovery. A pair of mirrored openfiler boxes using consumer IDE drives stores our backups. Edited November 8, 2013 by KK20

Norphy Posted November 8, 2013 Posted November 8, 2013 (edited) Our domain controllers run Windows 2012 along with our file servers and Hyper-V Servers. A couple of other sundries run it too. We don't have a set schedule to update everything to 2012 but if a new server is being built or an existing one is being rebuilt, we'll generally put the latest version of the OS on there unless there's a specific reason not to. We're also using DPM to back up our infrastructure. It's simple but it works. After using Commvault Simpana (Which also worked but was bloody complicated), it's a breath of fresh air. KK20 Posted November 11, 2013 Posted November 11, 2013 No issues for me. Our 2k12 "file server" (profiles and shared network drives) is fine. No issues on our exchange, WSUS or DC. I did have a very similar issue with out WSUS 2k8 server some time ago. This server would work if I used the IP address but not "servername" in the UNC. I cannot remember how I resolved it but I have a feeling it was either DFS (in that implementing DFS made it go away) or DNS related.
